Rivas-García","doi":"10.20937/rica.55063","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.20937/rica.55063","url":null,"abstract":"Orange peel waste (OPW), as a relevant and recoverable residue, is composed of peel, internal tissue, pulp, and seeds. This organic residue is rich in carbohydrates useful for biofuel production processes. Biohydrogen is obtained from dark fermentation (DF) and photofermentation (PF), which are complementary in the bioprocessing chain. The objective of this work was to compare the environmental impact assessment of a sequential dark–photofermentation process (Scenario DF-PF) and the individual fermentation processes: dark fermentation (Scenario DF) and photofermentation (Scenario PF). The assessment was performed at a laboratory scale, and the functional unit (FU) was defined as the production of 1 kg H2. Scenario DF showed the lowest environmental impacts regarding global warming and fossil resource scarcity indicators, with 375.5 kg CO2-eq/FU and 108.8 kg oil-eq/FU, respectively, followed by Scenario DF-PF and Scenario PF. Scenario DF-PF presented the lowest impact regarding the water consumption indicator (7.6 m3/FU), followed by Scenario DF, which had 46.6% more impact. Additionally, Scenario DF-PF required 3.3 times less substrate than Scenario DF due to more efficient substrate conversion. The high share of fossil fuels in the Mexican electricity mix directly impacts the processes that require electric energy, such as the PF process. Therefore, eco-friendly light sources should be used to minimize effects. We determined the bioaccumulation of neurotoxic saxitoxins and hepatotoxic microcystins in muscle and liver/viscera of native (Goodea atripinnis), introduced (Poeciliopsis gracilis), and commercially important (Oreochromis niloticus) fish in Santa Catarina, an anthropized reservoir in Central Mexico. Additionally, we calculated the potential risk of human exposure due to the consumption of the studied species. The Santa Catarina Reservoir showed some physical and chemical water parameters generally associated with cyanobacterial blooms (e.g., high phycocyanin, chlorophyll-a, dissolved phosphorus concentrations, and alkaline pH) with presence of cyanotoxins produced by the cyanobacteria genera Microcystis, Dolichospermum, and Planktothrix, which were found in dissolved and particulate (sestonic) fractions of water. Moreover, we detected the presence of saxitoxins and microcystins in the tissues of all species studied. The risk of intoxication for humans was lower for the consumption of Nile tilapia muscle than for the other analyzed species, whose consumption should be avoided since it exceeds the recommended daily intake of microcystins for a short-term (i.e., two-week exposure time). These findings are remarkable because commercial fishing in reservoirs and the consumption of these fish could represent a route to human exposure to toxins, particularly microcystins. Los máximos valores de producción fueron de 3524.9 ± 5.1 mL/L para hidrógeno, 2611.7 ± 71 mg/L para etanol y 136.9 ± 0.3 mg/L para 3-metil-1-butanol, obtenidos para una concentración de 30 g/L. Los datos también nos muestran la sensibilidad de Serratia marcescens (MZ413438) a concentraciones de 60 g/L, obteniéndose valores de producción para hidrógeno de 1249 ± 29.2 mL/L, para etanol de 1603.2 ± 79.3 mg/L y para 3-metil-1-butanol de 100.4 ± 5.4 mg/L. This study reports the concentrations of 15 metal(oid)s in four vegetables (tomato, onion, chili, and lettuce) cultivated in a greenhouse and three shade houses (two roofs of buildings and one in the UNAM Botanical Garden) in four locations in the metropolitan area of Mexico City. In this experiment, the contribution of metals and metalloids due to atmospheric deposition and irrigation may be negligible. Hence, the concentration of metals depends only on transfer from the soil. Soil analysis indicates that only vanadium in one location (a rooftop garden in the municipality of Venustiano Carranza) exceeds the permissible limits according to Mexican regulations. Lettuce shows the highest concentrations and transfer factors for most metals compared to the other vegetables studied. Transfer factors were exceptionally high for Cd (lettuce) and Hg (tomato), presenting values above 1. Concentrations of As, Cd, Hg, and Pb were compared with limit values recommended by different international agencies for vegetables. It was observed that, except for As, these values are exceeded in various vegetables harvested in this study. El uso excesivo e indiscriminado de antibióticos ha conducido a la aparición y propagación de bacterias resistentes. Las tetraciclinas han sido uno de los antibióticos más utilizados por su amplio espectro y bajo costo, y son frecuentemente detectados en ambientes acuáticos por su baja movilidad y persistencia. El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar la resistencia a tetraciclinas en aislados de Escherichia coli de aguas superficiales y aguas residuales en el noreste de Tamaulipas, México. Se analizaron 50 aislados de E. coli, de los cuales el 54 % fue resistente a tetraciclina; de este porcentaje, 16 y 26 % fueron resistentes a doxiciclina y minociclina, respectivamente. También se identificó resistencia a estreptomicina, ampicilina y trimetoprim-sulfametoxazol. De los genes tet, el más prevalente fue tet(A) en 74 %, mientras que intI se detectó en 22 % (p > 0.05). En el ensayo de conjugación plasmídica, 41 % de los aislados de E. coli transfirieron la resistencia a tetraciclina. Sólo tet(A) se transfirió a las receptoras en 81 %, en tanto que intI en 27 %. Cinco replicones plasmídicos fueron identificados en las transconjugantes. Colomer-Mendoza","doi":"10.20937/rica.54977","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.20937/rica.54977","url":null,"abstract":"El Diario Oficial de la Federación en México publicó el 10 de mayo de 2021 el “Proyecto de Modificación de la NOM-083-SEMARNAT-2003” (Proyecto-083-SEMARNAT-2021), para la correcta disposición de los residuos sólidos urbanos y de manejo especial, que considera la actualización de tecnologías y los compromisos ante el cambio climático. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue analizar la NOM-083-SEMARNAT-2003 y su Proyecto-083-SEMARNAT-2021, así como evaluar bajo sus criterios tres sitios de disposición final (SDF), para determinar las áreas de oportunidad y los retos que implica el cumplimiento de las modificaciones propuestas bajo el enfoque de la sostenibilidad. Para ello se elaboraron cuadros comparativos, se clasificaron los criterios en las categorías social, ambiental, técnico y económico y, se compararon con el Real Decreto 646/2020 de España. La evaluación de los SDF con ambas normas Mexicanas, se realizó utilizando tablas de verificación. En el Proyecto-083-SEMARNAT-2021 se incluyeron 44 criterios, se modificó la clasificación de los SDF y los requerimientos para el tipo D. La NOM-083-SEMARNAT-2003 y el Proyecto-083-SEMARNAT-2021 priorizan la categoría ambiental (53 % y 47%, respectivamente) y la categoría social es 10 % menor que la normatividad española. El cumplimiento con el Proyecto-083-SEMARNAT-2021 fue menor en 1.6 %, 2.6 % y 8.3 % para los SDF de Tenango del Valle, Aculco y Xalatlaco, Estado de México respectivamente. Dentro de los contaminantes ambientales más importantes están las partículas suspendidas, las cuales han sido clasificadas dentro del Grupo 1 como carcinógenas para humanos por la Agencia Internacional sobre la Investigación en Cáncer. A las partículas suspendidas se adosan componentes con relevancia toxicológica como los metales a los que se les atribuyen, al menos en parte, los efectos adversos que las partículas generan en los organismos. Uno de los metales presentes en las partículas es el vanadio, metal que se encuentra como elemento traza abundante en el petróleo mexicano y que se emite a la atmósfera principalmente por la quema de sus derivados, como la gasolina. Sin embargo, aunque el vanadio está presente en la atmósfera, sus concentraciones no se monitorean, ya que ni éste ni algún otro metal están considerados como contaminantes criterio. Their recovery is carried out by soil washing and applying calcium salts, which are sometimes unprofitable processes. A low-cost and environmentally friendly alternative to remedy adverse soil conditions is bioremediation using microorganisms or organic amendments. For this reason, this study intended to evaluate the effects of the addition of dry microalgal biomass on sodic soils and suggest its use as an organic amendment. The effect of the microalgal biomass was studied through the mineralization dynamics of carbon and nitrogen sources in short-term experiments. All experiments were performed at laboratory scale. Microalgal biomass was obtained from a consortium grown in dairy wastewater and subsequently dried and pulverized. Four different treatments of dry microalgal biomass were applied to 50 g of sodic soil, and high microbial activity was observed in the soil (obtaining a production of 240 mg C-CO2/kg dry soil), along with the production of nitrates (presenting values 33.8-1.45 mg N-NO3+/kg dry soil) via the release of ammonia (obtaining 5.46 mg N-NH3+/kg dry soil), and mineralization of organic N into ammonium (producing 1071.92 mg N-NH4+/kg dry soil). Plants have been used as an alternative for the removal of atmospheric PM in urban environments. The removal of PM depends on different plant morphological traits, including trichomes and epicuticles evaluated on trees. However, leaf traits for herbaceous plants commonly used in urban gardens have not been fully explored. This study used filtering to quantify the PM deposition and to describe leaf morphological traits throughout optical devices on 20 leaves from six herbaceous species –Calathea rufibarba, Calathea zebrina, Heliconia psittacorum, Heliconia rostrata, Philodendron sp. and Dieffenbachia sp. Our results suggest that structures such as trichomes –C. rufibarba– and epicuticle –H. psittacorum– play a role in PM deposition. On the other hand, large leaf size did not influence the deposition of PM per leaf unit area. Therefore, for improving city air quality, our study suggests selecting species with epidermal traits independent of leaf area. El método de investigación es mixto con corte exploratorio, se recolectaron datos en un cuestionario en línea, sobre las actitudes, valores y acciones relacionadas al uso de agroquímicos, además de una autoevaluación de conocimientos sobre plaguicidas, fertilizantes y sus efectos en el ambiente y la salud humana. El enfoque teórico surge de la psicología ambiental, así como de la agroecología y de la educación ambiental. Se propone un modelo teórico para explorar la formación de modelos mentales y creencias sobre sistemas agrícolas sustentables y se plantean recomendaciones para la optimización de programas académicos de ingenierías en agronomía con enfoque hacia la sustentabilidad.
