In dry eyes, the tear film is weakened, mostly due to low tear film quality and the quantity of secretion. This low quality of tear secretion can lead to the rapid breakup of tears. In recent times, particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic, the prevalence of dry eye has increased. Relevant studies found that the prevalence of dry eye is higher in females than males. This research work is based only on symptoms of dry eye disease in Malaysia to determine its prevalence among students at the UCSI University KL campus because of the increase in reported cases of dry eyes especially post Movement Control Order (MCO). Methods: A total of 199 students, ranging in age 17 to 30, were included in this research. This is a cross-sectional study that was conducted on participants who fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Demographic questionnaires and Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) results were collected. Results: On the UCSI KL Campus, students who suffer from dry eye are 82% of the population. The Pearson Chi-Square test showed a significant difference between gender and dry eye, X2 (1, N= 199) = 8.64, p < 0.0033. Female students are more likely to develop dry eye than male students. Conclusion: The prevalence of dry eyes among UCSI students is high. This could be attributable to prolonged or improper mask-wearing. It is suggested that researchers and health policymakers should take heed to these emerging risk factors related to wearing of mask.","PeriodicalId":506570,"journal":{"name":"November 2023","volume":"73 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139278530","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of ethanol leaf extracts of A. malaccensis on MCF-7 cells. Methods: MTT-based cytotoxic and antiproliferative assay was used to determine the outcome of ethanolic extract toward MCF-7 cells. The mode of cell death was determined by the AO/PI double staining assay and the depolarisation of the mitochondria membrane potential. Results: IC50 value of the extract against MCF-7 cells treated for 72 hours was 4.1 ± 2.08 µg/mL, while the IC50 value for doxorubicin was 2.92 ± 0.12 µg/mL. The extract showed a lower cytotoxic effect against the NIH/3T3 cells and inhibited the growth of MCF-7 cells in a dose dependent manner. AO/PI double stain showed that the ethanolic extract of A. malaccensis leaves induced MCF-7 cells into apoptotic cell death. The present study showed that the ethanolic extract of A. malaccensis induced apoptosis through mitochondrial pathway as indicated by its ability to take up JC-1. Conclusion: The study found that ethanolic extract obtained from A. malaccensis leaves is cytotoxic on MCF-7 cells, resulting to apoptotic cell death of the cells.","PeriodicalId":506570,"journal":{"name":"November 2023","volume":"2 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139278535","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A 46-year-old male presented to the emergency department following a motor vehicle accident (MVA). He complained of severe abdominal pain and sustained ecchymosis with localized tenderness over the right upper quadrant. Despite a positive focused assessment with sonography in trauma scan, initial computed tomography of the abdomen revealed grade 1 liver and splenic injury but was unable to identify gallbladder perforation. He was initially managed conservatively until he developed secondary signs of sepsis after 24 hours. An exploratory laparotomy revealed a perforated gallbladder. A subtotal cholecystectomy was done. A retrospective review revealed a missed gallbladder perforation from an earlier CT scan assessment. We report a case of missed gallbladder perforation following MVA which was only diagnosed intraoperatively after failing non-operative management, following which the patient underwent laparotomy and subtotal cholecystectomy.","PeriodicalId":506570,"journal":{"name":"November 2023","volume":"79 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139278753","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Differences in the types of foods consumed between Malaysian and Western population leads to varying nutritional intake values. This study aimed to characterise the dietary intake of Malaysian endurance athletes as compared to sports nutrition recommendations, and to determine the associations between participants’ backgrounds and macronutrients intake status. Methods: A total of 85 endurance-trained Malaysian athletes participated in a cross-sectional study. Dietary intake for three days throughout the training season was evaluated using 24-hour dietary recall. The macronutrients and micronutrients intakes were compared to the nutritional recommendation for athletes and the Recommended Nutrient Intakes (RNI), respectively. The food serving size was compared to the Malaysian Food Pyramid 2020. Results: Of all participants, 51% met the minimum recommendations for carbohydrate (CHO) intake (6g/kg/day). For protein intake, 88% of participants had surpassed the lower limit of 1.2g/kg/day. The lower limit of fat intake (20% of total daily energy intake) was met by 99% of the participants. Most of the participants had a suboptimal intake of calcium, vitamin A, and vitamin E, while all had inadequate vitamin D intake. The athletes’ institution was significantly associated with the CHO intake status. Also, the athletes’ institution and the highest education level were significantly associated with the protein intake status. Conclusion: Athletes who practised Asian-based diets were able to achieve the energy, protein, and fat intake recommendations. However, there was a suboptimal intake of the CHO and micronutrients as compared to the recommendations.","PeriodicalId":506570,"journal":{"name":"November 2023","volume":"89 3-4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139278523","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, poorly designed exoskeletons can strain the muscles and cause injuries to users. The objectives of this review paper are to review the ergonomics factors that contribute to a harmonious user-exoskeleton interaction and to explore the current trends, challenges, and future directions for developing ergonomically designed exoskeletons. In this review, 102 relevant papers published from 2015 to 2023 were retrieved from Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar. These papers were considered in the analysis for gathering relevant information on the topic. The authors identified six ergonomics factors, namely kinematic compatibility, contact pressure, postural control, metabolic cost, cognitive workload, as well as task demands and workplace conditions, that can influence the interaction between users and exoskeletons. By understanding and addressing these ergonomics factors during the design and development process, exoskeleton designers can enhance the user experience and adoption of the devices in daily living activities and industrial applications.","PeriodicalId":506570,"journal":{"name":"November 2023","volume":"24 11","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139278691","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The clinical manifestations of bilateral pleural effusion (chylothorax) caused by filariasis are so rare that they are often challenging to diagnose. This case study described a 21-year-old woman, domiciled in Sumatra, with complaints of shortness of breath and swollen legs. Radiological examination results found bilateral pleural effusion. Initially, it was suspected that the effusion was caused by tuberculosis, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), and malignancy; however, treatments for these did not improve the patient’s condition. A Water Seal Drainage (WSD) was inserted and a chylous or chylothorax pleural effusion was obtained, and microfilaria was founded in the nocturnal blood examinations. Oxygen and nursing interventions were administered using lung expansion and postural drainage techniques, supported by education on effective coughing and deep breathing, along with the fulfillment of nutritional needs and dietary adjustments.","PeriodicalId":506570,"journal":{"name":"November 2023","volume":"78 1-2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139278768","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
