Among these species, Euglossa cordata (Linnaeus, 1758) has a wide distribution in different environments. This research aimed to analyze aspects of the nesting biology of E. cordata in open areas near Atlantic Forest fragments in the Extreme South of Bahia, Brazil. Collections were carried out using PET bottle traps, a methodology commonly employed for capturing Meliponini but adapted for the first time in this study, presenting a low cost and good applicability for studies on Euglossa bees. Ten traps were randomly distributed in open environments at the Federal Institute of Bahia. Three nests of E. cordata were found, with a total of thirteen brood cells and six female emergences in traps 2 and 3. In all nests, the cells were constructed in a circular manner and arranged close to each other. The cells were built with resin and had a scalene trapezoid shape with variations in diameter and length. Studies on bees of the Euglossini tribe, popularly known as orchid bees, often focus on males collected using odor baits. Conversely, studies on females and nesting biology are scarce. Thus, methodologies that facilitate the capture of females and Euglossini nests are extremely relevant for enhancing our understanding of the group.","PeriodicalId":506304,"journal":{"name":"Scientia Plena","volume":"104 22","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141124862","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As formulações experimentais de pães foram criadas em uma unidade industrial, substituindo parcialmente a farinha de trigo integral por concentrações variadas de farinha de bagaço de malte (10, 20, 30 e 40%). Estas formulações foram então caracterizadas tanto nutricionalmente quanto às suas propriedades tecnológicas. Os resultados revelaram que a incorporação da farinha de bagaço de malte (granulometria variando de 0,15 a 1,50 mm) em pães integrais, com substituição parcial de até 20% da farinha de trigo integral, resultou em produtos que apresentaram excelente aceitação sensorial e possuíam características e qualidades sensoriais semelhantes às do pão feito inteiramente de farinha de trigo. Além disso, foi observado um aumento nutricional significativo, particularmente em termos de conteúdo de proteínas e potássio. Conclui-se que a utilização do bagaço de malte no preparo da farinha de trigo integral apresenta uma alternativa ambientalmente sustentável e que reduz o desperdício. Também permite o desenvolvimento de novos produtos, como o pão, devido aos benefícios nutricionais do bagaço do malte. Assim, é imprescindível explorar ainda mais o bagaço de malte, dados seus atributos nutricionais e sua abundante disponibilidade na indústria cervejeira.","PeriodicalId":506304,"journal":{"name":"Scientia Plena","volume":"108 42","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141125828","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, aiming at technical alternatives for a transition to more sustainable crops, the objective of this work was to investigate whether strawberry cultivars grown in a greenhouse for two cycles differ in terms of yield potential and fruit chemical quality. The treatments were nine strawberry cultivars (‘Albion’, ‘Aromas’, ‘Camarosa’, ‘Camino Real’, ‘Fronteras’, ‘Merced’, ‘Monterey’, ‘Portola’, and ‘San Andreas’) and two production cycles (2019/2020 and 2020/2021), arranged in a randomized block design with six replications. The results showed that in the second cycle the ‘Aromas’, ‘Camarosa’, ‘Camino Real’, ‘Merced’, and ‘Monterey’ cultivars stood out in terms of the highest number of fruits produced. ‘Fronteras’ and ‘Merced’ had the highest total production of strawberries in the second cycle. ‘Merced’ and ‘Monterey’ produced the highest fruits in the first cycle and ‘Fronteras’ produced strawberries with the highest average fresh fruit mass in the second cycle. ‘Albion’ and ‘Camarosa’ stood out for the higher sugar content in the fruits produced. The least acidic and most flavorful strawberries were produced in the first cycle. In conclusion, strawberry cultivars grown in greenhouses for two cycles differ in terms of yield potential and chemical fruit quality. This study indicates that the nine cultivars can be grown for two consecutive cycles without compromising berry production.","PeriodicalId":506304,"journal":{"name":"Scientia Plena","volume":"124 49","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141125251","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main objective is to demonstrate the stability of this solution and the in vivo effects on serum and liver parameters of glucose and lipid metabolism. After 180 days of analysis the COS showed physicochemical stability (pH and specific gravity) when submitted to different temperatures (24 °C and 40 °C), but the chemical stability, presented by the content of CY (%) in the formulation, showed that the degradation rate of CY increased 20x when submitted to a stress condition (40 °C). Male Wistar rats were treated with IOS 1.5 (industrial oral solution 1.5 mg.kg-1) or saline for 21 days and IOS 5.0 or COS (5 mg.kg-1) or placebo by gavage for 23 days. Treatment with IOS 1.5 increased liver cholesterol by 30 % without changing liver and body weight in this group. In contrast, treatment with IOS and COS (5 mg.kg-1) increased final body weight by 8 % compared to placebo. Interestingly, the COS group had increased liver glycogen accompanied by reduced food intake compared to IOS. However, COS and IOS 5.0 did not induce changes in adipose tissue weight, liver weight, as well as serum glucose, triacylglycerol and cholesterol levels. This work provides us with data that prove the stability of the compound solution at room temperature, as well as inducing an increase in the final body weight of rats with no alteration in glucose and lipid metabolism.","PeriodicalId":506304,"journal":{"name":"Scientia Plena","volume":"101 33","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141125245","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Polyurethane is composed mainly of isocyanate (-N=C=O) and polyol (-OH) functional groups, presenting different characteristics by adding fillers. This polymer has a wide range of applications such as adhesives, coatings, varnishes, elastomers and foams. Aiming improvements in its thermal properties, calcium carbonate addition was investigated in proportions of 12.5%, 25% and 37.5% (w/w). This filler is widely used to change the properties of polymers, as it is easily found in nature and has a low cost. For the synthesis of polyurethane samples, isocyanate and polyol were reacted using \"one shot\" process. The obtained results demonstrated the change in the glass transition temperatures (Tg) of the material to higher values, which indicates a decrease in the mobility of the polymer chains. Also, an increase in decomposition temperature was observed via differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). With Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis, it was possible to analyze that the material was successfully synthesized by the appearance of the characteristic bands of PU foams. Furthermore, with the addition of calcium carbonate, it was possible to identify the presence of two phases, which indicate that the material underwent changes in its crystallinity, identified through X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Finally, it was possible to observe via optical microscopy (OM) analysis that the addition of filler significantly changed the morphology of the foams.","PeriodicalId":506304,"journal":{"name":"Scientia Plena","volume":"125 8","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141125135","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The experiment was conducted in 3-dm³ pots containing soil:sand (2:1) + treatment (no fertilizer, organic fertilizer, or chemical fertilizer). The organic fertilizer was 8 kg m-2 of an equal mixture of bovine, goat, and quail manures. The variables assessed were leaf, stem, root, and total dry weights; chlorophyll and carotenoid contents; leaf nutrients; total polyphenols; total antioxidant capacity; oxygen radical absorption capacity; DPPH free radical scavenging activity; essential oil content; and thymol production, content, and yield. Organic fertilization significantly increased the variables assessed and reduced oxidative stress indicators. It resulted in gains in the dry weight of the plants and the accumulation of nutrients in dry leaves of T. vulgaris. For the quantitative parameters of the essential oil and thymol, organic fertilization was significantly higher than the other treatments, especially for thymol content and yield. T. vulgaris plants fertilized with organic fertilizer maximize their plant production and their yield of compounds of interest, such as thymol, possibly because these outputs indicate a balance between improved vegetative production and the elimination of reactive oxygen species.","PeriodicalId":506304,"journal":{"name":"Scientia Plena","volume":"113 15","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141125606","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, the heliophilous lizard Ameiva ameiva was used for the first time for the micronucleus test and other nuclear abnormalities. This biomarker is rapid and reliable in evaluating populations environmentally exposed to genotoxic agents. Thus, two animal populations were collected in the Cerrado Central riparian forests with pasture influence. The results indicated the presence of micronuclei and different nuclear erythrocyte abnormalities: cells with nuclear bud, segmented nucleus, notched nucleus, lobed nucleus, and reniform nucleus. There was no statistical difference in the frequency of DNA damage between the populations in the pasture areas. The inclusion of these species in biomonitoring programs seems relevant to shed light on the susceptibility to expression of genotoxic damage.
