Molecular and morphological data lead to the recognition of fourteen species in eastern Africa, in three genera: eleven species in Riccardia Gray, two in Aneura Dumort. and one in Afroriccardia Reeb & Gradst. One further species, R. multifida, may be expected in eastern Africa and is included in this treatment. Keys, descriptions and illustrations are provided for the accepted species together with data on types, synonymy, geographical distribution, habitat and differentiating characters. A knowledge database was built using Xper3 and an interactive key was generated using the Xper3 platform tools. Riccardia gasparii sp. nov., R. martinii sp. nov. and R. vohimanensis sp. nov. are described as new to science. A comparison with other regions of the world shows that Africa has relatively few Aneuraceae taxa; only the Holarctic region, with the exception of East Asia, has fewer species. Moreover, dendroid taxa and species with cuticular ornamentation are lacking in Africa. On the other hand, Africa stands out by the presence of the endemic genus Afroriccardia. More collecting is needed in future to clarify the species ranges, the status of questionable taxa and the knowledge of local floras.","PeriodicalId":50612,"journal":{"name":"Cryptogamie Bryologie","volume":"97 1","pages":"11 - 34"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2020-01-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89905509","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Only half of these were recorded in the last 50 years and none were recollected since first reported. Study of a Spanish population of R. cossoniana Trab., recorded in 2002 from Las Lomas, Malaga province, revealed that it belongs to R. affinis. The correct identity of the populations, which had not been available for study, was already suggested by reproductive and ecological characteristics of the plants mentioned in the original publication. The three main lagoons from the Las Lomas endorheic system, where the plants had been recorded, were sampled and living plants of R. affinis were found in Viso lagoon whereas culture of sediments yielded plants of this species from Viso and Caja lagoons. Riella affinis is new to continental Europe and the new Spanish populations are described and illustrated in detail. Riella cossoniana is excluded from Malaga province. Riella affinis is classified as critically endangered (CR) globally and for Spain; the new Iberian populations should be targeted for conservation. An identification key to the currently recognised European species of Riella Mont. is included.","PeriodicalId":50612,"journal":{"name":"Cryptogamie Bryologie","volume":"15 1","pages":"297 - 307"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2019-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90782885","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to enhance and update our knowledge, a survey of Anthocerotophyta and Marchantiophyta of Kroumiria was carried out in May 1-5, 2017, recording two hornworts and 30 liverworts including Riccia gougetiana Durieu & Mont. var. armatissima Levier ex Müll.Frib., new to the area. The liverwort and hornwort flora of Kroumiria now stands at 80 reliably recorded taxa, of which 22 species may be threatened. As for Croatia, only two species are listed in the available literature, with most recent record being more than 85 years old. Our study carried out in Central Croatia identified three new species for the hornwort flora, including two new genera – Notothylas Sull. ex. A. Gray and Anthoceros L. Our finding of very rare Natura 2000 species Notothylas orbicularis (Schwein.) A. Gray, reported hitherto only from four Central European countries, is the first in Southeast Europe and the southernmost in Europe. Furthermore, we recorded Anthoceros agrestis Paton and Phaeoceros carolinianus (Michx.) Prosk., which are either very rare or, more likely, overlooked and understudied in Southeast Europe.","PeriodicalId":50612,"journal":{"name":"Cryptogamie Bryologie","volume":"1 1","pages":"289 - 295"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2019-12-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88731617","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The taxon was supposed to differ from the widespread C. riparius (Host ex Brid.) Arn. in the red and papillose peristome teeth, as opposed to yellow and smooth peristome teeth of C. riparius. However, we found that the peristome of C. riparius was inconsistently described in the bryological literature, with some authors admitting reddish and papillose peristome teeth as well. To clarify the peristome characteristics of C. riparius and the taxonomic identity of C. confertus we studied both taxa morphologically and molecularly. Sporophyte characteristics of C. riparius are variable, but most specimens have red and papillose peristome teeth, and no other morphological difference could be found between plants assigned to C. confertus and C. riparius. The many erroneous or incomplete descriptions of the peristome characteristics of C. riparius may be related to the fact that in central Europe sporophytes are rarely produced and that the fragile peristome easily erodes. Furthermore, the phylogenetic analysis of chloroplast rps4 and nuclear ITS2 loci failed to segregate specimens assigned to C. riparius from those assigned to C. confertus, including material from the type locality and further newly discovered localities of the latter taxon. Consequently, we propose the synonymy of both taxa.","PeriodicalId":50612,"journal":{"name":"Cryptogamie Bryologie","volume":"934 1","pages":"259 - 269"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2019-11-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77553575","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Khibiny moss population, earlier defined as T. brevicollis Hornsch., is attributed to T. laetevirens. We reaffirmed that the East Sayan samples belong to T. brevicollis, so, currently only one locality of T. brevicollis is known in Russia. The revision of T. longicollis Michx. samples from the Kamchatka Peninsula, and Kunashir Island (the Kuril Islands) confirmed their affiliation to this species, despite some deviations in morphological features. The taxonomical concepts inferred from variation in morphological traits are supported by for the first molecular-phylogenetic analyses of the genus Trematodon based on the nucleotide sequence data of ITS2 nrDNA and trnL-F cpDNA. Although the patterns be usually from positive to humped-shaped, elevational gradients may run in a negative way with the species richness decreasing in relation to the altitude. The floristic gradient may vary according species biology, site and, scale for analyses. Therefore, elevational gradient can be useful for detecting points for biological conservation and may be analized by using sensitive species as approach for others species including banner-species. Along an elevational gradient in a harsh semiarid environment we are showing a negative relationship between bryophyte species richness and increasing elevation. The observed floristic gradient reflects environmental constraints related to light requirements and low humidity as environmental conditions become more severe at higher altitudes, where anthropogenic activities such as farming dramatically alter the vegetation covering. The diversity of bryophytes in terms of their light requirements makes them excellent bioindicators of environmental quality. We provide data that will be useful for conservation planning and management, and report species with rare distributions in Brazil and others not yet recorded as occurring in dry forests.","PeriodicalId":50612,"journal":{"name":"Cryptogamie Bryologie","volume":"279 1","pages":"219 - 231"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2019-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80108752","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
