The purpose of this study was to describe the major characters' politeness tactics. The data for this descriptive qualitative study, the dialogues uttered by all of the movie's principal characters, were scrutinized using Brown and Levinson's (1987) paradigm. The investigation studied how the characters used politeness strategies such as positive politeness, Bald-on -Record, negative politeness and off-record techniques in their utterances. The data came from the script of Joy, and it was identified that 833 politeness strategies were employed. Bald on Record (8%), Positive Politeness (51%), Negative Politeness (35%), and Off Record (6%). The findings revealed that positive politeness strategies were the most frequently used in this film. The results indicated that the main characters had a tendency to use positive politeness to show their respect and also to maintain a harmonious relationship in the family and workplace.","PeriodicalId":505938,"journal":{"name":"World Journal of English Language","volume":"57 7","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139206329","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Masculinity, a socially constructed concept, varies across cultures and historical periods. Men, masculinity and nature relation is primarily looked from the perspective of Ecofeminism, which critiques the interconnected oppression of women and nature within patriarchal systems. On the other hand, ecomasculinity specifically examines how traditional ideals of masculinity influence men’s attitudes and behaviours towards the environment. Employing the Ecomasculinty lens, this paper intends to explore the subtleties of the relationship between men, masculinity, and nature in a caste-based society in Tamil Nadu. The study employs textual analysis. The text considered is Heat by Poomani, translated into English by N. Kalyana Raman. The analysis will closely examine landscape representation, ecological elements, masculinity and the portrayal of caste in the novel. The caste system is considered vital in the study, as it influences the characters’ relationship with the land and their perceptions of nature. Overall, the paper aims to comprehensively understand the complex relationship between masculinity and nature, considering the intersectionality and plurality of masculinities in different social and cultural contexts. By exploring the relationship between men, masculinity, and nature in the caste-based society of Tamil Nadu, the study brings out the impact of social structures on the environment and how men relate to it in the said context.","PeriodicalId":505938,"journal":{"name":"World Journal of English Language","volume":"10 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139199715","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The widely dispersed populace feels a sense of cultural identity. People have relocated from the beginning of time in quest of better possibilities. They integrate outside of their home and absorb values from their country. Their minds split into two halves, which they must reunite. Many obstacles stand in their way, but they eventually affect the surroundings. When moving from one area to another, not only do eating habits, wardrobes, lifestyles, and languages change, but a person’s whole behavioral pattern also transforms. Multiculturalism and hybridity provide a fresh avenue for transformation. Conversely, it causes isolation, a lack of roots, and homesickness. There is always a longing about “Where do they belong?” They feel distant despite the mixing of two cultures. Their hybridity becomes an integral part of who they are. The result is linguistic, social, psychological, and historical progress as they combine the finest elements of both cultures. They are bound to earthly reality by their affinity. While this transfusion happens, the following generation adds fresh perspectives and broadens its reach. The battle between anxiousness and a lack of roots never ends. With time, individuals tend to cultivate a more nuanced perspective on life, recognizing the value of striking a harmonious balance between tradition and modernity as the most optimal approach for the collective.","PeriodicalId":505938,"journal":{"name":"World Journal of English Language","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139209377","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With a backdrop that accentuates the significance of metaphors in language proficiency, the study addressed the lack of attention to metaphoric competence in EFL settings, especially in Saudi Arabia. The study embraced a quantitative paradigm, utilizing a cross-sectional design, and engaged a sample of 94 Saudi EFL students. Data was collected through instruments such as the Receptive Language Proficiency Test, Receptive Metaphoric Competence Test (R-MC), and Familiarity Scale (FAMscale). Key findings indicated a notable difference in students' scores between sentence-level tests (SLT) and situation-based tests (SBT) about the interpretation of metaphors. Furthermore, significant differences emerged among three linguistic and conceptual categories of metaphors for both SLT and SBT. In essence, the research underscored the paramount role of situational context and linguistic-conceptual nuances in influencing EFL learners' metaphoric interpretations. The study underscores the important differences in Saudi EFL learners' interpretations of metaphors across varied linguistic and conceptual categories. These findings advocate for targeted pedagogical approaches in EFL curricula that emphasize the integration of linguistically and conceptually congruent metaphoric expressions, paving the way for enhanced comprehension and proficiency among learners.","PeriodicalId":505938,"journal":{"name":"World Journal of English Language","volume":"21 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139238821","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Associations between L2WTC and other L2 concepts, such as foreign language anxiety and self-perceived L2 competence, have been studied for some time. L2 learning is likely associated with other, broader psychological concepts, such as personality, and it is the aim of this study to explore the associations between L2WTC, foreign language anxiety, self-perceived L2 competence, openness to experience and extraversion, in the Saudi context. Being the first study to explore these associations in this context, this study has the potential to contribute to understanding of relatively low English competence among Saudi students by seeking to understand predictors of L2WTC. After conducting factor analyses (principal axis factoring with direct oblimin) of raw scores, two separate multiple regression analyses were conducted, with L2WTC outside classroom (L2WTC-OC) and L2WTC inside classroom (L2WTC-IC) factors as dependent variables, and factors relating to foreign language anxiety, self-perceived L2 competence, extraversion, and openness to experience entered as predictors. The addition of openness to experience improved prediction of L2WTC-IC above and beyond other factors (R square change = .025; p=.001), while addiction of extraversion improved prediction of L2WTC-OC (R square change = .032; p=.025).","PeriodicalId":505938,"journal":{"name":"World Journal of English Language","volume":"48 80","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139239707","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Employing qualitative research methods, including in-depth interviews with twenty-eight stakeholders in seven Saudi universities, this study emphasizes the urgency of bolstering ICC within EFL curricula. The findings underscore the profound significance of integrating authentic intercultural experiences and creating pragmatic avenues for skill refinement. While acknowledging the consensus regarding the importance of enhancing ICC in EFL education, this research also sheds light on various obstacles that may impede the effective integration of ICC. These obstacles encompass limited resources, resistance to change, constraints arising from cultural diversity, language barriers, cultural stereotypes, biases, and time constraints, thus underscoring the need for meticulous planning, resource allocation, and the provision of professional development opportunities. This research strongly advocates for an unwavering commitment to continued research in this field, with the primary goal of advancing ICC among EFL learners. The study offers a range of strategic proposals, including the integration of ICC into the curriculum, the facilitation of cultural immersion opportunities, the promotion of cross-cultural collaboration and communication, the integration of technology for intercultural learning, the provision of intercultural training for EFL educators, and the cultivation of partnerships with international businesses and organizations. The implications of this study are significant for educators, policymakers, and researchers dedicated to fostering intercultural understanding and sustainable development through EFL education. Because of this, it is crucial to provide effective teaching for students with speech impairments so that they can improve their communication abilities. This experimental study looks into how well the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework can help students with speech impairments develop their language skills. The study involved 112 participants aged 18 to 20 diagnosed with speech impairments. During the study, the participants were randomly divided into two groups: an experimental group n=56, which received speaking skills instruction using the UDL framework, and a control group n=56, which received traditional instruction. Participants from both groups will complete a pre-test to measure their baseline speaking skills. The experimental samples received instruction using UDL, while the control group was exposed to traditional methods. After the intervention, both groups completed a post-test to measure their speaking skills. Statistical methods such as ANOVA and t-tests were used to analyze the data collected. According to the results, the experimental group performed better on the post-test than the control group regarding speaking skills. Performance levels were higher among the experimental group than among the control group. This study proves that the UDL framework can effectively facilitate speaking skills for learners with speech impairments. The study suggests that the UDL framework can help educators deliver instruction accessible to all learners, including those with disabilities.","PeriodicalId":505938,"journal":{"name":"World Journal of English Language","volume":"52 5","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139241658","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Scholars and literary experts have engaged in ongoing discussions and analysis over the controversial nature of his literary creations throughout the span of several centuries. While certain critics have said that his written works exhibit signs of misogyny, racism, and colonialism perspectives, alternative perspectives have seen him as a potent advocate for humanism and a catalyst for social change. This research focuses on the Victorian Era, spanning from 1837 until the death of Queen Victoria in 1901, and explores the various interpretations of Jonathan Swift's literary works within this historical period. This research draws upon the perspectives of several critics, such as Kelly, Orrery, Real, Thackeray, Macaulay, Graik, Bucknill, LoForte-Rand, and Taine, to assert that Swift was a figure of considerable controversy. The current study has also reached the finding that Swift demonstrated argumentative inclinations. The existence of multiple readings of Swift's Gulliver's Travels serves as support for this claim.","PeriodicalId":505938,"journal":{"name":"World Journal of English Language","volume":"59 45","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139241605","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such a challenge has been confirmed to negatively influence the retrieval of the most relevant documents. Therefore, we extended the paradigm of using computational methods and natural language processing (NLP) tools, primarily tailored for processing English texts, to explore morphosyntactic as well as lexical issues disturbing the accuracy of Arabic IR systems. Findings revealed striking disparities in the efficacy of IR systems integrated into these search engines, which can be attributed to four principal challenges: (a) the intricate morpho-syntactic structures inherent in Arabic; (b) the idiosyncratic orthographical system of the Arabic script; (c) the multifaceted semantic flexibility of certain lexical elements; and (d) the intriguing diaglossic nature of Arabic, allowing for the coexistence of multiple linguistic varieties within a single discourse situation. Drawing from these findings, a series of solutions rooted in supervised machine learning techniques, including clustering models and adaptations based on geographic locations, are proposed. Moreover, the study advocates for the capacity of search engines to interpret queries across all Arabic varieties, encompassing vernacular dialects. Furthermore, the importance of search engines accommodating queries irrespective of the specific language adopted by users is underscored. While the research primarily centers on Arabic, its implications resonate beyond this language alone. By applying computational methodologies originally designed for English to Arabic, the study not only addresses the challenges specific to Arabic IR systems but also contributes valuable insights that transcend linguistic boundaries. Through a comparative lens, issues like word sense disambiguation between Arabic and English are juxtaposed, extracting lessons that can inform advancements in information retrieval for both languages.","PeriodicalId":505938,"journal":{"name":"World Journal of English Language","volume":"624 ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139240001","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
