This study examined the burden of VAD from 1990 to 2019 in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region by age, sex and sociodemographic index (SDI).The data were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019 database. We reported the prevalence, incidence, and years lived with disability (YLDs) that were attributable to VAD for the MENA region, along with its constituent countries.In 2019, the MENA region had 30.6 million prevalent cases of VAD, with an age-standardized prevalence rate of 5249.9 per 100,000 population. In addition, VAD was responsible for 62.2 thousand YLDs, with an age-standardized YLD rate of 10.2 per 100,000. The age-standardized prevalence [50.3% (−55.9 to −44.7)] and YLD [−49.3% (−55.3 to −43.1)] rates of VAD have significantly decreased since 1990. In 2019, the MENA region’s VAD-attributable YLD rate was below the global average for males and females across all age groups. Current strategies to mitigate these effects are limited by their effectiveness and potential side effects. Molecular hydrogen (H₂) has gained attention for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Studies have suggested that H2 supplementation contributes to antioxidant potential and anti-fatigue during exercise, but the variance in the observations and study protocols is presented across those studies.This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to comprehensively characterize the effects of H₂ supplementation on physical performance (i.e., endurance, muscular strength, and explosive power), providing knowledge that can inform strategies using H2 for enhancing physical performance.We conducted a literature search of six databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Medline, Sport-Discus, Embase, and PsycINFO) according to the PRISMA guidelines. The data were extracted from the included studies and converted into the standardized mean difference (SMD). After that, we performed random-effects meta-analyses and used the I2 statistic to evaluate heterogeneity. The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) was used to assess the quality of the evidence obtained from this meta-analysis.In total, 27 publications consisting of 597 participants were included. The search finally included aerobic endurance, anaerobic endurance, muscular strength, lower limb explosive power, rating of perceived exertion (RPE), blood lactate (BLA), and average heart rate (HRavg) in the effect size (ES) synthesis. The ES of H2 on aerobic endurance, including V̇O2max (SMD = 0.09, p = 0.394; I2 = 0%) and aerobic endurance exercise (SMD = 0.04, p = 0.687; I2 = 0%), were not significant and trivial; the ES of H2 on 30 s maximal anaerobic endurance (SMD = 0.19, p = 0.239; I2 = 0%) was not significant and trivial; the ES of H2 on muscular strength (SMD = 0.19, p = 0.265; I2 = 0%) was not significant and trivial; but the ES of H2 on lower limb explosive power (SMD = 0.30, p = 0.018; I2 = 0%) was significant and small. In addition, H2 reduces RPE (SMD = −0.37, p = 0.009; I2 = 58.0%) and BLA (SMD = −0.37, p = 0.001; I2 = 22.0%) during exercise, but not HRavg (SMD = −0.27, p = 0.094; I2 = 0%).These findings suggest that H2 supplementation is favorable in healthy adults to improve lower limb explosive power, alleviate fatigue, and boost BLA clearance, but may not be effectively improving aerobic and anaerobic endurance and muscular strength. Vertical farming has the potential to support local food production and security. As a Total Controlled Environment Agriculture (TCEA) system, vertical farming employs LED lighting which offers opportunities to modulate light spectrum and intensity, and thus can be used to influence plant growth and phytochemical composition, including antioxidants beneficial for human health. In this study, we investigated the effect of four red-to-blue light ratios of LEDs (R:B 1, 2.5, 5 and 9) on the growth and antioxidant components in red amaranth microgreens and red lettuce. Plant growth, total phenols, betalains, anthocyanins, vitamin C and antioxidant capacity (ferric reducing antioxidant power assay) were evaluated. A higher proportion of red light resulted in biometric responses, i.e., stem elongation in red amaranth and longer leaves in red lettuce, while the increase in the blue light fraction led to the upregulation of antioxidative components, especially total phenols, betalains (in red amaranth) and anthocyanins (in red lettuce). The antioxidant capacity of both crops was strongly positively correlated with the levels of these phytochemicals. This study aims to explore the attributable burden of kidney cancer associated with HBMI and its proportion at different levels.The data used in this research were obtained from the Global Burden of Diseases Study 2019. We utilized DisMod-MR 2.1, a Bayesian meta-regression tool, to estimate the burden of kidney cancer attributable to HBMI, which was measured by age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR) and age-standardized disability-adjusted life years rate (ASDR). Correlation analysis was conducted by the Spearman rank order correlation method. The temporal trends were analyzed by estimating the estimated annual percentage change (EAPC).Globally in 2019, there were a total of 31.7 thousand deaths and 751.89 thousand disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) attributable to kidney cancer caused by HBMI, increased by 183.1 and 164%, respectively. Over the period from 1990 to 2019, the burden of kidney cancer attributable to HBMI increased in all regions, with the most significant increases occurring in Low-middle socio-demographic index (SDI) and Low SDI regions. At the national level, countries with lower SDI had lower ASMR and ASDR compared to developed nations. However, the EAPC values, which indicate the rate of increase, were significantly higher in these countries than in developed nations. Furthermore, across all years from 1990 to 2019, males experienced a greater and more rapidly increasing burden of kidney cancer attributable to HBMI than females.As the population grows and dietary patterns shift, the burden of kidney cancer attributable to HBMI is expected to become even more severe. Males and developed regions have borne a heavier burden from 1990 to 2019. This study aimed to fill this gap.We utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) for the periods 2003–2006 and 2009–2014. Participants’ BMI was categorized as lean (<25), overweight (25 ≤ BMI < 30), and obese (BMI ≥ 30). Psoriasis status was determined through self-reporting. The main outcome measured was all-cause mortality up to December 2019. We accounted for multiple covariates, such as sociodemographic factors and histories of smoking and alcohol consumption. Our statistical analyses mainly included Kaplan–Meier survival analysis, Restricted Cubic Spline (RCS) and Multivariate Cox Regression (MCR). We also applied propensity score matching (PSM) to verify the robustness of our findings.Among 22,876 participants, 618 (2.70%) reported a history of psoriasis. An overall effect from the MCR analysis showed that, among individuals with psoriasis, a higher baseline BMI was independently associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality, noting a 5.5% rise in mortality risk per BMI unit [hazard ratio (HR) = 1.055, 95% CI: 1.004–1.110, p = 0.035]. This significant relationship persisted after PSM. A statistically significant positive correlation was consistent among males, smokers, and individuals younger than 60. However, no such association was found in individuals without a history of psoriasis. Additionally, no significant difference in mortality risk was found between lean and overweight groups with psoriasis, according to the RCS regression and stratified analysis.Our findings indicated a trend that, higher BMIs significantly correlated with increased risks of all-cause mortality in people with psoriasis, particularly among obese ones. However, the impact of being overweight on this relationship remains underexplored. Adding onto existing literature, this study aimed to examine the association between dietary Oxidative Balance Score (OBS) and lifestyle OBS (which make up the overall OBS), and Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) prevalence at different Systemic Immune Inflammation Index (SII) and Systemic Inflammatory Response Index (SIRI) levels.This study involved 9,451 subjects selected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007–2018. The OBS comprised 20 dietary and lifestyle factors. Statistical methods included Weighted Linear Regression Analysis (WLRA), Logistic Regression Analysis (LRA), Sensitivity Analysis (SA), and Restricted Cubic Spline (RCS) analysis.The multivariate WLRA revealed that OBS was significantly negatively correlated with both SII (β = −5.36, p < 0.001) and SIRI (β = −0.013, p < 0.001) levels. In SA, removing any single OBS component had no significant effect on the WLRA results of SII and SIRI. Further subgroup analyses revealed that OBS was more impactful in lowering SII in women than in men. Additionally, OBS was more significantly negatively correlated with SII and SIRI in the low-age group than in the high-age group. Moreover, RCS analysis confirmed this linear relationship. Compared to dietary OBS, lifestyle OBS exerted a more significant effect on Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) (OR: 0.794, p = 0.002), hypertension (OR: 0.738, p < 0.001), Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) (OR: 0.736, p = 0.005), Myocardial Infarction (MI) (OR: 0.785, p = 0.002), and stroke (OR: 0.807, p = 0.029) prevalence. Furthermore, SIRI exhibited a significant interaction in the relationship between overall OBS, dietary OBS, and CHF (P for interaction < 0.001). On the other hand, SII had a significant interaction in the relationship between overall OBS, dietary OBS, and MI (P for interaction < 0.05).OBS, including lifestyle and dietary OBS, were significantly negatively associated with SII and SIRI. It is also used as a bioreactor by the textile and pharmaceutical industries to mass produce recombinant bioactive proteins containing silk-based materials. Furthermore, silkworms are well-known as a source of food and have also been orally administered to prevent and treat several human disorders. In this study, we aimed to investigate the inherent bio-physicochemical properties of edible silkworms to accurately evaluate their clinical and nutritional potential. We prepared raw powder from whole larvae of silkworm. The yield rate of the powder derived from dried larvae was almost 100% (98.1–99.1% in replicates). As “percentage yield” translates to “Budomari” in Japanese, this raw powder was named “B100rw.” We further prepared B100dn that was denatured through autoclaving. Thereafter, we examined whether B100rw sustained the original bio-physicochemical properties by comparing it with B100dn. There was no significant difference in nutritional content between B100rw and B100dn. B100rw contained proteins derived from silkworm larvae and mulberry leaves, whereas the proteins of B100dn were mostly degraded. On measuring the enzymatic activity of both powders using trehalase as an indicator enzyme, B100rw was found to maintain trehalase activity. B100rw also maintained a random coil conformation, similar to that of liquid silk. This suggested that B100rw sustained the unique bio-physicochemical properties of living larvae. Growing evidence showed that the sodium-to-potassium ratio (Na/K) was significantly associated with blood pressure (BP). However, studies on the dose-response relationship of spot urinary Na/K ratio with hypertension and BP in the general population are scarce, especially in the Chinese population.Data from the post-intervention survey of the Shandong Ministry of Health Action on Salt and Hypertension (SMASH) project was analyzed. Associations between Na/K molar ratio and hypertension prevalence and between Na/K molar ratio and BP indices were analyzed using multivariable logistic and linear regression, respectively, followed by subgroup analysis and interaction analysis. The restricted cubic spline model was used to explore the dose–response relationship. Informed by existing literature, we adjusted for potential confounding factors, including temperature and renal function, to assess the association and dose–response relationship.There was a non-linear positive association between Na/K and hypertension (OR:1.09, 95%CI: 1.08–1.11) and a linear positive association between Na/K and systolic BP, diastolic BP, and mean arterial pressure (β 0.53, 95%CI: 0.45–0.60; β 0.36, 95%CI: 0.31–0.41; and β 0.42, 95%CI: 0.36–0.47, respectively). The association was stronger in individuals with hypertension, female patients, those in the 50–59-year age group, and those who were obese. Research to study food digestion in the human GI tract requires in vivo and in vitro approaches. In vivo methods involving human or animal subjects are often cost-prohibitive and raise ethical concerns. For these reasons, in vitro approaches are becoming more common. Several dynamic in vitro models that mimic one or more components of the GI tract have been developed at various research institutions and by commercial companies. While there is evidence of considerable novelty and innovation in the design of these models, there are many differences among them in how the mechanical breakdown of solid foods is accomplished. In some systems, modulating water pressure is used to achieve peristaltic contractions of the gastric antrum, whereas, in other models, the flexible walls of a gastric chamber are compressed by the movement of rollers or clamps outside the walls of the test chamber. Although much progress has been made in standardizing the biochemical environment appropriate to the food digestion process, there is a lack of standard protocols to measure mechanical forces that result in the breakdown of solid foods. Similarly, no standardized methods are available to evaluate the results obtained from in vitro trials for validation purposes. However, how vitamin D levels affect mortality in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients is still unclear. Thus, this study aimed to explore the relationship between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels and the risk of death from all causes in U.S. adults with COPD.This study analyzed 1,876 adults with COPD from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2005–2018). Mortality data up to December 31, 2019, were obtained from the National Death Index (NDI) records. Participants were categorized into three groups according to their 25(OH)D levels: Q1 (<50.0 nmol/L) for deficiency; Q2 (50.0–74.9 nmol/L) for insufficiency; and Q3 (≥75.0 nmol/L) for adequacy. A weighted Cox regression model assessed the link between 25(OH)D levels and mortality. Kaplan–Meier survival curves, subgroup, and sensitivity analyses were conducted. Additionally, the relationship between 25(OH)D and the hazard ratio (HR) was detailed through restricted cubic spline analysis. Mediation analysis revealed how 25(OH)D mediates the relationship between Dietary Inflammatory Index and mortality.There were 395 all-cause deaths during the follow-up, resulting in a mortality rate of 21.06%. After adjusting for potential confounders, higher 25(OH)D levels significantly correlated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality in COPD patients (HR = 0.52, 95% CI: 0.37–0.72, p < 0.001). Restricted cubic spline analysis indicated a non-linear relationship between 25(OH)D levels and all-cause mortality (p for nonlinear = 0.023), with levels below 63.4 nmol/L posing an independent risk for all-cause mortality in COPD patients (HR = 0.98, 95% CI: 0.97–0.99, p = 0.005).
