Ziv","doi":"10.3389/fhort.2024.1365147","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.3389/fhort.2024.1365147","url":null,"abstract":"Acorn squash (Cucurbita pepo) have been a familiar item at produce stands for decades in the United States and Canada, but little known or appreciated elsewhere. Following the breeding and development of sweet-fleshed acorn squash in Israel and its commercial introduction in 2007, acorn squash became a high-priced, popular produce item there. Scarcity of supply in winter has led to attempts to fill the consumer demand by using available protected cultivation infrastructure in the relatively mild area of southwestern Israel for production. Such production has proven feasible but it was not determined whether it would be preferable to allow the plants to simply grow sprawling on the ground or vertically, using trellises to train the plants to grow erect. Two sweet acorn squash hybrid cultivars differing in fruit size were compared, growing on the ground or on trellises, for yield, quality, and storability of the fruits. The hybrids bore fully ripe fruits from December through February, producing 56% higher yields when trellised rather than when allowed to grow on the ground. The fruits of trellised plants of both hybrids were more uniformly black-green and firmer than those of ground-grown plants. Their dry matter content at harvest and after 78 days of storage was very high, averaging 28% and 25%, respectively. Total soluble solids content of the fruit flesh from trellised plants was 19% at harvest and an extraordinary 20% after storage at 10°C, 70% RH. The fruit flesh of trellised plants was also more highly colored and had higher carotenoid, ascorbate, and anti-oxidant contents. IBA and NAA play a critical role in generating adventitious roots (AR) when applied exogenously. In sustainable agriculture, the substitution of chemical inputs, with alternative natural eco-friendly products presents a key challenge. Biostimulants can form part of a solution to mitigate such risks deriving from the use of agrochemicals, they are generally considered to be non-toxic, non-polluting, biodegradable, and non-hazardous. The current knowledge of the use of commercial seaweed extract (SE) products applied to ornamental cutting propagation has not been summarized until now. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review, and we hypothesized that SE-based biostimulant application to ornamental stem cuttings improves AR formation in terms of rooting percentage, root number, and architecture. Moreover, they increase the overall quality of a rooted cutting as dry biomass and organic compound content. The authors chose SE-based biostimulants because they have been proven to have an extremely low carbon footprint; moreover, they are expected to account for more than 33% of the global market for biostimulants and reached a value of 894 million Euros by 2022. This review focuses on (i) SE-based biostimulants, in particular, brown algae; (ii) technical information on five commercial products: Goteo®, Kelpak®, AlgaminoPlant, Bio Rhizotonic, Actiwawe and others, less known, also used as phytoregulators substitutes; (iii) applied protocols, describing dose, application method, number of treatments, cutting type; (iv) effects of applied protocols on rooting rate, root architecture and overall rooted cutting quality. Volatiles emitted by pests and infected plants are usually found at low concentrations. The important challenge is to be able to capture an exact collection of relative quantities of the relevant VOCs. Here we present an innovative headspace collecting device (HSCD) for sampling VOCs, which ensures an exact regulation of mass flow velocity and collected total gas volume allowing besides qualitative analysis of collected VOCs, an exact comparison of their relative quantities in plant or insect headspace samples. The HSCD possess six parallel odor collection systems each consisting of a digital mass flow detector and controller connected to a vacuum pump, which are mounted in a trolley suitcase, connected by tubes, and wired electrically. The programming of the channels, can be done by a digital control unit. Using the HSCD, VOCs emitted by the brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB), Halyomorpha halys, from its different developmental stages including egg, nymphal stages, nymphal exuvia, and adults were collected on thermal desorption tubes and analyzed using an automated thermal desorber connected to a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry system. Forty-five VOCs were identified in total, which mainly consisted of tridecane (4.36-69.33%), E-2-decenal (4.24-26.48%), 2-undecenal (0.63-50.03%), and E-4-oxo-2-hexenal (1.22-20.58%). The random forest analysis revealed three different chemical patterns among BMSB life stages samples. In conclusion, these results indicate that the new developed HSCD, a mobile, easy to use, and reliable instrument, has a high potential to sample relevant VOCs of a specific life stage of an insect both qualitatively and quantitatively. The increasing demand for sustainable food production necessitates a shift towards agricultural practices that mitigate adverse environmental impacts. Excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides has raised concerns, prompting a surge of interest in harnessing the potential of beneficial soil microorganisms, particularly plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria. This study explores the impact of soil inoculation with PGPR treatments on grapefruit seedlings, including a commercial strain of Bacillus velezensis, a fresh inoculum of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens, a mixture of three selected citrus endophytic Bacillus spp. isolates, inorganic fertilizers, and combinations thereof. The aim was to test their ability to enhance growth and nutrient uptake reducing the input of chemical fertilization. Results indicated that the combination of Bacillus velezensis and inorganic fertilization significantly improved soil nutrient availability and enhanced plant growth, surpassing both negative (water) and positive (inorganic fertilization) controls. Shoot and root system biomass showed significant increases from Bacillus velezensis plus inorganic fertilization compared to other treatments. These findings provide insights into management methods that can reduce chemical inputs while promoting plant productivity. Increasing the total amount of genetic variability available for evaluation, selection, and breeding is foundational to the development of novel Osmanthus cultivars with increased cold-hardiness and improved ornamental characteristics such as high rooting rates, faster growth, fragrant flowers, and an evergreen or semi-evergreen habit. Hybridization among Osmanthus species should generate novel phenotypes and allow trait introgression among populations and breeding lines. The objectives of this study were to produce, verify, and evaluate Osmanthus hybrids by making controlled and open-pollinated crosses among Osmanthus species, using SSR markers to determine parentage of cross progeny, and comparing flowering, leaf shape, and form of hybrids offspring with parents. Fifty-eight of 66 progenies (88%) were assigned paternity at the 95% confidence level or above and 47 progenies (71%) were assigned paternity at the 99% confidence level. Novel Osmanthus hybrids were produced including O. armatus × O. fortunei, O. armatus × O. heterophyllus, and O. armatus × O. fragrans. Open-pollinated families increased in height an average of 204% and 159% per year in the first and second growing seasons, respectively. Male flower type was significantly associated with progeny flower type (χ2 = 17.5, p < 0.0001) while leaf margin was not associated with cross family (χ2 = 0.83, p = 0.84). Limited information on the genetic architecture and its poor post-harvest tuber quality traits significantly hinder its use as food and source of income. Hence, dissecting the genetics underlying the expression of its post-harvest tuber quality traits is essential for establishing proper breeding schemes.In this study, 138 D. praehensilis accessions collected in Ghana were sequenced using Diversity Array Technology (DArTSeq). The materials were profiled for dry matter content (DMC), tuber flesh oxidation (TBOXI) and for tuber flesh hardness (TBhard) during two cropping seasons.Diversity assessment using population structure, principal component analysis and hierarchical clustering methods revealed the presence of three major groups. Six genetic models were used for the trait association analysis using multiple random locus mixed linear model (MrMLM). Sixteen SNP markers distributed across the yam genome were identified to be associated with the evaluated traits. The associated SNP markers displayed a phenotypic variance ranged from 4.22% in TBHard to 16.92% in TBOXI. A total 25 putative candidate genes were identified around the SNP markers. The putative genes were identified to play key roles in tuber bulking, oxidative browning and starch hydroxylase. In India, the consumption of French beans has grown steadily, especially in the North Eastern region, driven by heightened consumer interest in its nutritional benefits. Considering these factors, we initiated an induced mutagenesis program to enhance the genetic diversity of locally grown French bean genotypes, traditionally cultivated for their superior adaptability.To achieve this, we initiated an induced mutagenesis program. Seeds from the village seed stock were subjected to treatments with varying doses of ethyl methane sulfonate (EMS) ranging from 0.1% to 0.4% and sodium azide (SA) from 0.1% to 0.4%. The objective was to increase yield potential and enhance genetic diversity.The treatment with EMS and SA led to a non-specific, dosage-independent reduction in biophysiological characteristics in French bean mutants. Notably, the 0.4% SA treatment significantly inhibited germination and fertility, causing a decrease in chlorophyll (10.02 mg. g-1 FW) and carotenoid (1.57 mg. g-1 FW) levels. This suggests a disruption in genes associated with chlorophyll and carotenoid synthesis. However, in the M2 generation, the mutagenic treatments substantially improved yield and associated traits. The highest pod yield per plant was recorded at 79.50 gm for the 0.2% EMS treatment. A character association study revealed strong correlations (0.217 to 0.995) between pod yield and other agronomic traits.The results indicate that selecting mutants based on these traits in populations treated with EMS and SA can significantly increase crop yield. The 0.2% SA and 0.2% EMS M2 mutant populations exhibited the highest induced variability, making them ideal for selecting higher-yielding mutant lines for further breeding generations. To mitigate wound-related losses, it is necessary to accelerate wound healing (WH) responses of potato tubers. While role of nitric oxide (NO) in healing of wounded biological tissues is well known, its impact on WH responses of potato tubers has not been examined thoroughly. The aim of this study was to elucidate the potential modulatory role of NO in WH response of potato tubers by determining the activity of key enzymes associated with NO biosynthesis.Using a model wounding system, tuber tissue discs were extracted from mini tubers of cv. Russet Burbank to examine their WH responses. Tuber discs were treated with NO related chemicals, such as NO scavenger, nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitor, and NO donors. The effect of these treatments on in vitro production of NO, activity of nitrate reductase, NOS, and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase were determined. The accumulation of suberin polyphenolics (SPP) in wounded parenchyma cells, an indicator of early suberization process, was analyzed histologically.Treatment of tuber tissues with the higher dose of an NO scavenger (2-phenyl-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide) at the time of wounding completely ceased SPP accumulation between 0 h to 3 d after wounding. Increased production of NO and enhanced activity of NOS were also observed immediately after wounding of the tuber tissues. Validation of genetic mapping studies is often hindered by asynchronous marker technology. The development of a standardized genotyping platform that targets a specific set of polymorphic loci can be a practical solution to unify the scientific and breeding community toward blueberry improvement. The objective of this study was to develop and evaluate a targeted genotyping platform for cultivated blueberries that is affordable, reproducible, and sufficiently high density to warrant large-scale adoption for genomic studies. The Flex-Seq platform was developed in a two-step procedure that resulted in 22,000 loci that yielded 194,365 single nucleotide polymorphisms when assessed in a diversity set of 192 samples including cultivated and other related wild Vaccinium species. Locus recovery averaged 89.4% in the cultivated polyploid blueberry (northern highbush [NHB], southern highbush [SHB], and rabbiteye [RE]) and on average 88.8% were polymorphic. While recovery of these loci was lower in the other Vaccinium species assayed, recovery remained high and ranged between 60.8% and 70.4% depending on the taxonomic distance to the cultivated blueberry targeted in this platform. NHB had the highest mean number of variants per locus at 9.7, followed by RE with 9.1, SHB with 8.5, and a range between 7.7 and 8.5 in other species. As expected, the total number of unique-in-state haplotypes exceeded the total number of variants in the domesticated blueberries. Phylogenetic analysis using a subset of the SNPs and haplotypes mostly conformed to known relationships. The platform also offers flexibility about the number of loci, depth of sequencing for accurate dosage calling, loci and haplotype reconstruction from increased fragment length. Once such inputs have been reduced, the ecosystem services generated by the vegetation result in an increase in biodiversity in terms of plant and animal species, an improvement in soil quality and biota, the mitigation of air pollutants and carbon sequestration, as well as a reduction in soil temperature. Environmental education and citizen science are also some of the benefits of this type of vegetation, especially in urban areas. Herbaceous meadow-like communities, which are composed of forbs only or a combination of graminoid and forb species, are usually established by sowing. The seeds are available for purchase from specialized seed producers as single species or in a mix, some companies offer mixes composed of garden species with botanical species. Donor meadows are the sources of the genetic material and the template to reproduce the meadow herbaceous community at different sites through seed harvest, hay harvest, and the displacement of soil with its seed bank. Management techniques, such as soil preparation, determining the appropriate sowing and mowing time, can help in establishing and maintaining the most desirable species. The suspension of urban turf mowing allows the growth of the natural seed bank, which in unproductive soils facilitates the appearance of many pollinator-friendly herbaceous species. With the appropriate pedological conditions and management, the natural urban herbaceous vegetation thus provides beautiful and rich plant communities, which are also easy to maintain.
