The study indicated the need for developing appropriate reservoir based fishery management measures in protected ecosystems considering the intricate trade-offs between conservation strategies leading to ensuring livelihoods for the resource poor fishers. Fish and water samples collected were analysed on various scales. The study indicated that Salmostoma novacula was the major species contributing to the diversity in terms of abundance in the reservoir. The diversity, species evenness (0.92 to 0.95) and species richness index (1.73 to 2.39) were observed to be higher at the sampling site ‘Intermediate 1’. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) indicated that diversity was positively associated with dissolved oxygen (0.58), pH (0.62) and hardness (0.66) and negatively correlated with conductivity (-0.60). Socio-economics of the reservoir fishers identified very low monthly relative contribution of the species to the fishers’ income of the reservoir, which calls for better management measures of the reservoir with respect to supporting the livelihood and sustainable management. Based on fishers’ perception on fisheries management, an index called reservoir fisheries management index (RFMI) was introduced, which indicated that management of technical drivers will ensure better fisheries in Peechi Reservoir. The study identified that technological interventions like enclosure-based culture system using indigenous fishes of the reservoir such as Etroplus suratensis , hatchery operations and tourism during the lean period to support the livelihood of the fishers are critically needed. Thus, a participatory mode of culture supported sustainable conservative management may be incorporated in this reservoir. This is the first study of its kind in reservoir based aquatic system.","PeriodicalId":50372,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Fisheries","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2021-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49059933","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this study was to examine the changes in haematological and biochemical parameters along with expression of stress related genes in response to Mycobacterium fortuitum infection in the Indian major carp, rohu Labeo rohita (Hamilton, 1822). Juveniles of L. rohita were experimentally infected with M. fortuitum strain ATCC 6841, by immersion challenge at three different dosages of 5x105 cfu fish-1 (group T2), 5x10 6 cfu fish-1 (group T3) and 5x107 cfu fish-1 (group T4) along with a control group. After 60 days post-infection, fishes in groups T2, T3 and T4 were observed with necrotic lesions in skin and M. fortuitum was recovered from moribund fishes. Heat shock protein (hsp) gene expression analysis was performed in liver tissues by RT-PCR and hsps were analysed by Western Blotting in fishes of all treatment groups and control. Significant changes (p<0.05) were found in haemato-biochemical parameters including glucose, cortisol, blood parameters, liver enzymes, serum proteins and catalase and superoxidase dismutase activity along with mRNA expression of hsp genes viz, hsp60, hsp70, hsp78, hsp90 and hsp47 within groups T3 and T4 in comparison to control. The results suggest the pathogenicity of M. fortuitum (ATCC 6841) to L. rohita by promoting stress parameters and the transcription level of stress related genes.","PeriodicalId":50372,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Fisheries","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2021-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47501500","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The correlation of dietary cholesterol with heart ailments has led people to become more health conscious and in this scenario the present study was carried out to investigate the monthly variations in Indian squid to aid in better decision making by consumers. Squid samples [Uroteuthis (Photololigo) duvaucelii] were collected in quadruplicate on monthly basis for the period of one year (2015-2016) and subjected to analysis for cholesterol, non-saponifiable matter (NSM) and proximate composition. The cholesterol content of squid was highest (279 mg%) and lowest (7.3 mg%) during the months of April and December with respect to total length and size, respectively. A monthly variation in proximate composition of squid with respect to the total length and size was observed. No correlation observed between fat content and cholesterol in squid. Significant difference in cholesterol content was observed monthly in the squid samples. NSM content (0.23%) was negligible and undetectable in the samples. The study relied on primary data collected from 147 migrant fishermen households selected through random sampling method. The study attempts to examine the pros and cons of labour mobility in the marine fisheries sector. Analysis on the socio-economic profile of the migrant fishers revealed that 64% of migrant populations are in the age group 31-50 years and most of them belong to Christian and Hindu religions and 87% of them are from other backward castes (OBC). The prime reasons for migration included low income, debts and financial commitments and disguised unemployment. The analysis indicated that consequent to migration, the fishers augmented their income besides increased savings, construction of house and possession of personal assets along with an elevation to their social status. The expenditure pattern of the migrants including clothing, shelter, food and education of dependents were also analysed. The major problems confronted during migration are language barrier, cultural lag and conflicts with established migrant labourers. Even though the labour mobility has contributed much to the marine fishery economy of the region, the ecological and social changes might impact occasional conflict between the migrants and native fishers for the scarce marine fishery resources. Hence, sufficient steps have to be taken for skill development and improvement of socio-economic conditions of the migrant fishers as well as for better management of conflicts among fishers. A total of 50 specimens of the fish were procured from the river Ganga at Kanpur region. The fresh and formalin preserved fish were measured for total length, standard length and body weight. Results of LWR revealed that the fresh and preserved fish followed different growth pattern and cube law. High values of r2 were obtained for the relationship between length and weight of the fish before and after preservation of the fish in formalin. Decrease in length and an increase in weight was observed in the preserved specimens of the fish due to the effect of formalin but were not statistically significant. The mean condition factor (K) showed significant (p<0.05) change in the fish after preservation. The univariate and multivariate analysis of truss measurements, two partially overlapping different convex hulls of the scatter plot of PC1 on PC2 and canonical discriminant functions showed highly significant morphometric heterogeneity between the specimens of fresh and preserved fish. The results of the present study suggest that fresh specimens of the fish should be used in research studies based on weight and linear body measurements of the fish.
