The main question the study attempts to answer is: How are the headscarf bans in Europe and Turkey discursively constructed and justified after 9/11 in Europe and the 28 February 1997 era in Turkey and what differences and parallels can be observed? With this question in mind, I first summarize the practices regarding the headscarf in Europe and Turkey and the policies adopted by the states. I also examine how headscarf bans are justified in public discourses in European countries and in Turkey. What the study ultimately reveals is that despite their differences in cultural, religious, and socio-political backgrounds, the European countries and Turkey have developed comparable perspectives and procedures regarding the representation of Muslim women in the public sphere during the historical eras compared.","PeriodicalId":502394,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Women's Studies","volume":"4 1","pages":"484 - 505"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139324374","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Platforms like Jeevansathi.com, Shaadi.com, and Bharat Matrimony promise to help them make the right marriage decision and get along for true compatibility. However, they have also contributed to the growing politics of “Sado-Ritual Syndrome” against the female population. Such matchmaking platforms work to convince both parties to manipulate each other with Western matrimony features such as a salaried male partner, a grand wedding, monogamy, multilingualism, and preferences based on profession and class. Shashi Deshpande, in her novel The Binding Vine, written in 1993, has elaborately addressed these features to critically investigate how sex in heterosexual marital relationships strips the wife of choice, respect, and agency by making the husband’s ejaculation the major responsibility of the wife. This paper attempts to expose this ideological system of matchmaking and its role in building people’s otherness encouraging them to treat human beings as options.","PeriodicalId":502394,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Women's Studies","volume":"54 1","pages":"465 - 483"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139324593","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One is to draw on women's networks to mobilize support and the other is to rely on the dynastic power. This paper contributes to existing studies by exploring the vital role of women NGOs in supplying and preparing women's legislative candidates through a case study of the West Sumatra Provincial Parliament in the 2019 General Election. Qualitative research methods were used for this research, drawing on in-depth interviews with women legislative candidates of West Sumatra Provincial Parliament and women activists. This paper reveals that the rise of women candidates in West Sumatra was “prepared” (dikader) by women's NGOs, namely Koalisi Perempuan Indonesia of West Sumatra and Wanita Islam of West Sumatra. These women NGOs have played an important role in getting women elected by providing political training, consultation, moral support, and access to women's networks. Women NGOs' support for these women candidates arose from their long-term socio-political relationship. This research has also revealed that the women candidates exercised a great deal of agency in reaching the voters through these women's NGOs and networks.","PeriodicalId":502394,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Women's Studies","volume":"3 1","pages":"506 - 530"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139324905","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Moving from the online waves of women’s agitation to real-world interactions, how do young women in urban China today understand feminism in their everyday lives? To what extent are they scrutinizing their personal experiences with what they understand as “feminist principles,” and how do they reconcile expectations and challenges from the family, school, and workplace? As my interlocutors’ experiences and narratives indicate, urban Chinese women with high educational attainments are less likely to identify with submissive female roles as daughters, wives, and mothers. However, their attitudes toward the new motto of women’s autonomy are at least equally ambivalent. Situating individual life experiences within a broader theoretical discussion on hegemonic femininities, I seek to provide a nuanced look into such ambivalence by illustrating how my interlocutors approximate multiple, sometimes contradicting, frameworks of “ideal womanhood” in narrating their hopes and dilemmas. Moreover, I suggest the “sidestepping feminism” narrative deserves more serious scholarly attention as it may open up new possibilities for enriching and theorizing women’s studies in the Chinese context.","PeriodicalId":502394,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Women's Studies","volume":"52 1","pages":"344 - 363"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139363586","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

I aim to investigate how Yi’s medical practice and her understanding of public health and hygiene reflected both the general ideology of “medical modernity” and more specifically Yi’s socialist leanings, as well as her quest for a more gender-equal society. Furthermore, the article will explore the meanings of gender equality in Yi’s journalistic writings and public utterances, as well as her ways of practicing the ideals of socialist feminism in both personal and public life and her attitudes towards lesbian intimacy and bisexuality. Additionally, the article examines the complicated context of Yi’s varied interactions with the Japanese colonial authorities and their press organs and identifies the overlaps between Yi’s ideals of socialist “medical modernity” and the modernist public health practices of colonial-period Korea’s imperialist rulers. Overall, by focusing on Yi’s life, beliefs, writings, and practices, this article aims to improve our understanding of modern socialist feminism, modern medicine, and the interactions between these two domains in colonial Korean society.","PeriodicalId":502394,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Women's Studies","volume":"3 1","pages":"319 - 343"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139363436","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper fills this void by analyzing how Australian newspaper articles, published from 2000 to 2019, portray sexual violence against these students through a critical framework informed by postcolonial feminist literature. The analysis reveals that the media tends to reinforce the idea of female international students as vulnerable and passive, reinforcing stereotypes through longstanding postcolonial tropes. Australian newspapers frequently portray them as ignorant, unhygienic, lacking credibility, or as exotic/sexual objects when covering sexual assault cases. Additionally, the media often invokes rape myths and engages in victim-blaming. Such representations in the newspaper may fail to offer a nuanced understanding of sexual violence experienced by female international students and downplay the importance of structural and environmental factors that contribute to this problem. The paper advocates for a change in media focus, urging great attention to structural and environmental factors while acknowledging the agency of international students. A more nuanced and contextualized understanding of sexual violence against female international students is crucial for developing effective prevention strategies that address the root causes of this issue.","PeriodicalId":502394,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Women's Studies","volume":"22 1","pages":"426 - 442"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139363478","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
