The sixth edition took place in 1999 in Bangkok, a city that was still recovering from a severe financial crisis. At that time, the Thai capital lacked exhibition venues fit for international shows.However, such inconvenience turned into an opportunity to display the artworks right at the urban realm for which they had been created. The event took place in a non-Western setting at the cusp of its particular stance of Postmodernity, at a time when globalization was in its nascent stages and the rise of China was a mere promise. The curatorial manifest, as well as the setup of the itinerant show, was markedly influenced by architect Rem Koolhaas and his vision about the upcoming development of Asia. To date, the Bangkok event has not received the same attention as other editions that enjoyed better support and attention by worldwide critics. Almost twenty-five years later, we examine through the lens of architecture the conditions that accompanied the Sixth Edition of “Cities on the Move”, assessing the significance of its legacy as a pivot moment in contemporary art and urban studies in Asia.","PeriodicalId":502183,"journal":{"name":"Cuadernos de Proyectos Arquitectónicos","volume":"324 9","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139177789","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Detrás de esta beca se encontraban figuras imprescindibles para la difusión de los valores de la arquitectura moderna en América como Mies van der Rohe, Sigfreid Giedion o Josep Lluis Sert. La obra de Chillida evidencia un paso de los Ikaraundi, que comienzan en 1957, hasta las obras que se interesan decididamente por los fenómenos espaciales (los Elogios de la arquitectura o los Lugares de encuentro) a finales de los 60. Este año de beca hace de bisagra y de acercamiento al campo de la arquitectura como él mismo reconoce en el informe que redactará para la recepción de la misma. Este capítulo de su biografía ha sido hasta ahora apenas considerado para explicar este giro tan trascendental en su carrera.AbstractIn 1958 Eduardo Chillida received a scholarship from the Graham Foundation of Chicago in which he was encouraged to explore deeper into those aspects of his work that are closest to the architectural discipline. Behind this scholarship there were essential figures for the dissemination of the values of modern architecture in America such as Mies van der Rohe, Sigfreid Giedion or Josep Lluis Sert. Chillida's work shows a step from the Ikaraundi, which began in 1957, to the works that are decidedly interested in spatial phenomena (the Praise of Architecture or the Meeting Places) at the end of the 60s. De aquí la conveniencia de revisitar determinados ejemplos que han demostrado su pertinencia de partida y el éxito en su devenir.En España las necesidades y las limitaciones derivadas del período autárquico que siguió a la Guerra Civil impusieron la lógica natural de la adaptación. Y más en determinados entornos y programas dictados desde la modestia. Este es el caso del Instituto Tajamar en Vallecas (Madrid), obra de los arquitectos César Ortiz- Echagüe y Rafael Echaide.En esta obra, desarrollada al final de su colaboración en común, se produjo un cambio de paradigma en su arquitectura: del sueño miesiano que caracterizó la mayor parte de su obra a lo que podríamos llamar un pragmatismo poético inspirado en la arquitectura de Richard Neutra a quien Ortiz-Echagüe había tratado y acompañado durante su visita a España en 1954.AbstractOne may wonder whether the term novelty encompasses the general conditions applied to architecture these days or whether it is rather a return to the origins, perhaps a cyclical regression: the restrictions imposed on the construction industry as a consequence of the climate crisis or of optimizing the relationship with the natural environment seem to be a timeless dictate always present in good architecture.These statements are found in the works of many authors from the distant and recent past that still inspire us today; hence, the interest of re-examining certain examples that have proved their initial relevance and their successful evolution.In Spain, the needs and limitations arising from the autarchic period following the Civil War imposed the natural logic of adaptation, and more so in certain settings and programs in which modesty prevails. This is the case of Instituto Tajamar in Vallecas (Madrid), designed by the architects César Ortiz-Echagüe and Rafael Echaide.Ortiz-Echagüe and Echaide completed this project at the end of their collaboration, and it meant a paradigm shift in their architecture: from the Miesian dream that characterized most of their work to what could be termed a poetic pragmatism inspired by the architecture of Richard Neutra, whom Ortiz-Echagüe had met and accompanied during his visit to Spain in 1954.","PeriodicalId":502183,"journal":{"name":"Cuadernos de Proyectos Arquitectónicos","volume":"428 14","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139177945","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Las futuras generaciones de historiadores de la arquitectura –y de arquitectos con inquietud–agradecerán la ambición, pero también la pasión que este profesor está imprimiendo en esta empresa y que, más allá de modas y querencias, está enriqueciendo y transformando la visión que de la arquitectura de este período hemos podido llegar a alcanzar.AbstractThe idea for this book is part of the great cultural and bibliographical project that Professor Carlos Sambricio has undertaken over the last few decades through several initiatives. The project involves a rigorous collaborative mapping of twentieth-century Spanish architectural culture, addressing all its variables. Future generations of architectural historians—and inquisitive architects—will be grateful for the ambition and passion that this professor is imprinting into this enterprise that, beyond fashions and inclinations, is enriching and transforming the vision we have attained of the architecture of the period.","PeriodicalId":502183,"journal":{"name":"Cuadernos de Proyectos Arquitectónicos","volume":"452 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139178197","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
