The well-known invasive Pheidole megacephala is now rare on Madeira, possibly because of competition with P. navigans. We did not come across the Argentine ant – Linepithema humile, which was once very common in the Funchal area. Despite extensive searching, the presumed endemic Temnothorax wollastoni (Donisthorpe, 1940) remains unknown other than from the type material. An infection that massively affects the workers compromising the proper maintenance of the fungus, or that can attack the fungus garden, can be fatal to the colony. Thus, leaf-cutting ants have evolved a complex defense system composed of both innate individual immunity and collective immunity to protect the colony against potential threats. To characterize the collective and individual immunity of Atta cephalotes workers to Metarizhium anisopliae we assessed the hygienic behavior and the expression of antimicrobial peptides of A. cephalotes workers triggered by Metarizhium anisopliae spores. As a control challenge, workers were treated with water. Regardless of whether the challenge was with water or spore suspension, A. cephalotes workers displayed an immediate response characterized by an increase in time spent both self-grooming and collective grooming along with a reduction in time spent fungus-grooming. The individual immunity triggered the expression of abaecin as early as 24 hours post-infection, exclusively in workers challenged with M. anisopliae. In contrast, the level of expression of defensin remained constant. These results suggest that upon being challenged with a suspension of M. anisopliae spores, A. cephalotes workers deploy both collective and individual immunity to produce a response against the invader. The differences between Asicimbex and Cimbex, Asicimbex and Palaeocimbex are discussed in detail. Descriptions, remarks, illustrations, a key to the known species of Asicimbex and a key to genera of Cimbicinae are provided. A. malaisei is confirmed as a valid species and recorded from China for the first time, with the female described for the first time. Like most previously described Eocene Encyrtidae, the new taxon differs from the majority of extant encyrtids by the subapical position of the cerci, the relatively long marginal vein of the forewing, a distinctly swollen but not triangular parastigma, and a seta marking the apex of the postmarginal vein is not any longer than others on this vein. The new genus is characterized by the presence of a filum spinosum and the hypopygium reaching way past the apex of syntergum. This combination of the character states is known only in a few representatives of extant Encyrtinae. The genus was previously synonymized with Heteropteron Brullé, 1846 by Dangerfield et al. (1999). In this study, we examined multiple specimens of Heteropteron-related genera: Heteropteron, Neocardiochiles, and Wesmaelella Spinola, 1851, and resurrect Neocardiochiles as a valid genus based on morphological data. As a result, five new species, N. alexeyi Kang, sp. nov. from Ecuador, N. franki Kang, sp. nov. from Costa Rica, N. braeti Kang, sp. nov., N. chriscarltoni Kang, sp. nov., and N. victoriae Kang, sp. nov., from French Guiana are included as members of Neocardiochiles and described based on morphological and molecular data. Additionally, four species previously included in Heteropteron are transferred to Neocardiochiles: Neocardiochiles fasciipennis Szépligeti, 1908, comb. nov., Neocardiochiles hasegawai (Dabek & Whitfield, 2020) comb. nov., Neocardiochiles kidonoi (Dabek & Whitfield, 2020), comb. nov., and Neocardiochiles whitfieldi (Mercado, 2003), comb. nov.. Diagnosis of each taxon and both traditional and interactive identification keys to Neocardiochiles species are included. Four of these parasitoids, Lathrolestes erythrocephalus, Ischyrocnemis goesi (both Ctenopelmatinae), Terozoa quadridens and Thibetoides aprosthemae (both Tryphoninae), could be identified and, by also incorporating laboratory studies, the developmental biology of each was elucidated and illustrated. A little supplementary information from a site in Italy is also presented. The fifth species was detected only once and failed to develop in its cocoon; it remains unidentified but the cephalic sclerites of its final instar larva are illustrated. The identified parasitoids are all more or less rare and little-known species and prior to this study only L. erythrocephalus had a known host; the others were biologically unknown even at the generic level and not recorded from France. The egg of L. erythrocephalus bears prominent hooked structures at its capital end, not reported in other studied Lathrolestes species. From its biology as an endoparasitoid of a sawfly and from larval characters, Ischyrocnemis is confidently assigned to Ctenopelmatinae. Both ctenopelmatines could successfully parasitise the host during any of its 2nd to 5th instars, but the tryphonines were less flexible. Terozoa monitors hosts until the moult to the final instar before ovipositing on them, usually affixing the egg to the head and often an eye (stemma), while Thibetoides parasitises much younger hosts, placing its strongly anchored egg behind a thoracic leg where it remains through successive host moults. Some characters used in the past to determine Terozoa species are discussed, and a new provisional key to the known species of Terozoa is presented. The very different developmental biology of Terozoa and Thibetoides may challenge views that they are closely related genera. Terozoa bituberculata (Constantineanu, 1973), stat. rev. is raised from synonymy with T. quadridens Perkins, 1962. While rigorous inspection programs are a regular part of commodity importation, rarely if ever are the internal contents of intercepted insects examined. As part of a genetic diversity project on intercepted Diabrotica undecimpunctata beetles, we detected CO1 DNA that closely matched sequences from Centistes parasitoid wasps in 9% of our samples. The presence of internal parasitoids was confirmed through dissections and imaging, wherein the samples were morphologically consistent with Centistes larvae. Such a discovery suggests that insect translocation as part of trade can be more diverse than initially thought. The case of Centistes in imported Diabrotica may present a positive benefit specifically to agroecosystems through the biological control of pest beetles like Diabrotica. However, drawbacks from such introductions include off-target parasitism of non-pest beetles and resultant impacts to insect populations in undisturbed ecosystems. Thus, examination of intercepted insects beyond the initial species identification is warranted to better understand the potential impacts of human mediated insect translocations. Parasitoid wasps are considered as both one of the most diverse and under-studied groups in the tree of life. Dusona Cameron, 1901 (Ichneumonidae, Campopleginae) is with 442 species one of the most species - rich genera of Darwin wasps, but despite the existence of recent keys, species identification has proven difficult to impossible to non-specialists. In this study, we examined about 1,500 Dusona specimens from recent and historical collections in Sweden and Switzerland. We provide a photographic guide to diagnostic characters and detailed plates for 57 out of 125 Western Palaearctic Dusona species, facilitating species identification based on existing keys. We add 11 and 3 species to the faunistic records of Sweden and Switzerland, respectively. Furthermore, we reconstruct the phylogeny of European Dusona based on four standard markers (COI, CAD, ITS2, 28S) for 45 species, complemented with a reliable reference barcode library for 46 species. Even though we can identify several morphologically distinct clades, we do not propose any new subgenera due to prevalent homoplasy of characters. While most species are well separated by barcodes, several morphologically distinct species have barely discriminatory barcode sequences (p-distances < 2%) or are even paraphyletic in this marker, indicating limitations in the applicability of barcodes for Darwin wasps. This study reveals severe gaps in the inventories of neglected taxa even for well-studied countries such as Sweden and Switzerland. An overview is presented of what observations and research have been carried out on ichneumonid diapause to date, and new ecological and distributional data are presented. The new data primarily concerns species that hibernate in association with trees, based on observations made in Belgium and the Netherlands. A preliminary checklist of the 50 species that are now known to hibernate is provided for both these countries. Auberteterus alternecoloratus (Cushman, 1929), Dicaelotus montanus (de Stefani, 1885), Dicaelotus pictus (Schmiedeknecht, 1903) and Orthocentrus sannio Holmgren, 1858 are reported as adult hibernators for the first time.
