It is found that there exists a special form (ACA) of two anticyclonic eddies (AE) sandwiching a cyclonic eddy (CE). The cyclonic eddy is then locally shed from the jet and shifts to the west before finally being recaptured by the mainstream. From observations, cyclonic eddy detachments in ACA form can be classified into two categories based on the detachment mode and on the sea surface height (SSH) data. Using reanalysis data, satellite observation data and Argo data, the analysis reveals that the positional relationship between the anticyclonic eddies and cyclonic eddy affects the detachment type. In addition, the existence of the ARC itself, with its giant meandering morphology and dissipative effect, also provides conditions for the detachment of the cyclonic eddy.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":50056,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Sea Research","volume":"198 ","pages":"Article 102481"},"PeriodicalIF":2.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1385110124000145/pdfft?md5=a1491d6bfcbd74ee1a114e911cf90634&pid=1-s2.0-S1385110124000145-main.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139714662","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"地球科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To overcome this challenge, a high-resolution Regional Ocean Model (ROMS) is set up with horizontal resolution of 0.03° × 0.03° and 50 vertical layers for the northern BoB, with the daily output of the First Institute of Oceanography surface wave-tide-circulation coupled ocean model (FIO-COM) as the boundary condition, and hourly ERA5 data as atmospheric forcings. This regional model is systematically validated and then utilized to reconstruct the upper ocean response due to the super cyclonic storm <em>Amphan</em> over the BoB from May 16 to 20, 2020. The upper ocean responses to <em>Amphan</em> in the northern BoB is well reconstructed with this regional model. On the right side of the cyclone track, sea surface temperature (SST) cooling (4 °C) and increased sea surface salinity (0.5 psu) are well reproduced. The primary oceanic triggering forces intensified the cyclone through the extraordinarily high SST (&gt;31 °C) and deep isothermal layer depth. Tropical cyclone heat potential was high (over 100Kj cm<sup>−2</sup>) during the early stages of the cyclone, which aided the transformation of a depression into a super cyclonic storm. Vertical entrainment and horizontal advection had a major influence in the pronounced cooling within the mixed layer.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":50056,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Sea Research","volume":"198 ","pages":"Article 102484"},"PeriodicalIF":2.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1385110124000170/pdfft?md5=d1f92946529397a828c32d1f1fb7e406&pid=1-s2.0-S1385110124000170-main.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139731860","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"地球科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, high-resolution numerical models for ocean surface waves have led to an enormous increase in computational complexity, posing a challenge with respect to balancing computational efficiency and timeliness. To meet the demand for refined ocean surface waves simulation/forecasting and to address the computational efficiency challenge of high-resolution ocean surface waves models, we propose a downscaling model called the Global location-Specific transformation Downscaling Network (GSDNet) based on the non-autoregressive fusion network (NAFNet). By incorporating global location-specific transformation and introducing a land–sea distribution indicator, GSDNet can quickly and accurately map low-resolution significant wave heights to high-resolution grids. The results show that, compared with traditional interpolation methods such as the bilinear, inverse distance weight interpolation (IDW), and bicubic methods, the GSDNet model can reduce the global mean absolute error (MAE) by &gt;77%. Compared with those of FourCastNet (FCN), the Koopman neural operator (KNO), the original NAFNet, and residual networks in deep learning from empirical downscaling methods (DL4DS_ResNet), the MAE decreases by &gt;21%. Furthermore, the GSDNet model outperforms the other downscaling methods at the coastal boundary and for identifying the maximum significant wave height. In this work, we provide an effective solution for balancing computational efficiency and timeliness, which is important for improving the accuracy and reliability of ocean surface waves simulation/forecasting.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":50056,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Sea Research","volume":"198 ","pages":"Article 102482"},"PeriodicalIF":2.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1385110124000157/pdfft?md5=561a5691ec5903bd17bd9a41b4e16209&pid=1-s2.0-S1385110124000157-main.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139709529","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"地球科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Traditionally, changes in marine biodiversity have been evaluated using ecological indices such as species richness and evenness. However, these indices overlook potential ecological differences. Indeed, these differences are more accurately reflected using functional diversity, which is likely more representative of key ecosystem processes, including resilience and resistance. However, calculating functional diversity is complex due to a lack of available information on the natural history of many marine species. To address this problem, we used the information on Echinoidea and Asteroidea in the Mexican Pacific to examine the relationship between the Rao's quadratic entropy index (FD<sub>Q</sub>), a commonly used functional diversity index, and indicators of community and taxonomic structure: richness (S), abundance (N), Shannon-Wiener diversity (H′), Pielou evenness (J'), taxonomic distinctness (Δ*), and average taxonomic distinctness (Δ+). We generated a set of equations to determine if these commonly used indices could be used as proximal indicators of FD<sub>Q</sub>. We obtained good correlations between functional diversity and structural diversity, although the significant correlations were between FD<sub>Q</sub> and J' (<em>r</em> = 0.975) and H′ (<em>r</em> = 0.965). These two ecological indices are very good indirect indicators of the local functional diversity of Echinoidea and Asteroidea in the Mexican Pacific and can be used as simple, inexpensive, and powerful tools to assess the complex effects of human-induced or natural perturbations in rocky reef ecosystems.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":50056,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Sea Research","volume":"198 ","pages":"Article 102478"},"PeriodicalIF":2.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S138511012400011X/pdfft?md5=4287868ef5fa16394cd077998c6570bf&pid=1-s2.0-S138511012400011X-main.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139714663","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"地球科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research focuses on the degree of synchronization between marine ecology and the economy. The objective of this study is to address this issue. The aim of this study was to determine the level of synchronization between marine ecology and the economy in nine coastal provinces of China from 2017 to 2022. This study examined the coordination between marine ecology and economy, using sustainable development theory and systems theory. The main focus was on the degree of synchronization between marine ecology and the economy. The study employed the coupling coordination model to evaluate the degree of coordination between marine ecology and economy selected for the study. The study analyzed differences in the degree of coordination and overall trends over time, as well as factors affecting the coordination of marine ecology and the economy. Kernel density and barrier degree models were used for the analysis. Finally, the study examined the key factors that affect the coordination of marine ecology and the economy in these regions using the barrier degree model. The evaluation index for coastal areas decreased from 0.179 to 0.153, indicating a decline in the marine environment. The eastern and southern marine economic circles exhibited a fluctuating upward trend. To enhance coordination between the economy and the ecological environment, this study recommends that coastal provinces prioritize environmental protection, adopt green development principles, increase investment in science and technology, and accelerate the transformation of marine science and technology.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":50056,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Sea Research","volume":"198 ","pages":"Article 102480"},"PeriodicalIF":2.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1385110124000133/pdfft?md5=5ebd8c867cdb5f44126e34ee83ec7685&pid=1-s2.0-S1385110124000133-main.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139688967","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"地球科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The MPs were characterized using stereo-, scanning electron-, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopies to determine their appearance, quantification, qualification, and morphology. The virus RNAs were extracted by rinsing the surface of the MPs with distilled water, followed by swapping and transferring the scratched material into viral transport medium. Identification was performed using SARS-CoV-2 molecular detection kits and real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). The most common type of MPs found in the wastewater acted as a vector for the virus RNA, whereas virus RNA was only identified in one sample of river water. These findings suggest that MPs can facilitate the spread of the virus through WWTPs and into receiving water bodies. Thus, research on MPs acting as carriers of COVID-19 should be emphasized as determining the presence of the coronavirus on the surface of MPs is crucial in determining a country's health strategies. However, the response of offshore wind energy to changing climate remains inconclusive. This study uses bias-corrected CMIP6 and time-varying sea surface temperature data to drive the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model and project future changes in wind energy resources in the northern South China Sea (SCS) under SSP2–4.5 and SSP5–8.5 scenarios for 2050 and 2100. The findings indicate that wind resources in the waters north of 18°N in the northern SCS generally show an increased change, with greater wind resources in 2100 than in 2050.
