{"title":"Effects of non-genetic factors on milk yield and chemical composition of milk from Holstein-Friesian cows","authors":"Onur Şahin","doi":"10.17533/udea.rccp.v37n2a3","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.17533/udea.rccp.v37n2a3","url":null,"abstract":"25 Background: In order to accurately determine the performance of cows in terms of milk yield 26 and milk components, it is necessary to determine the extent and direction of environmental 27 factors. Although many studies have explored environmental factors affecting milk yield, there 28 is not enough information about the effects and direction of environmental factors on the 29 composition of milk. Objective: To determine the effects of non-genetic factors, such as 30 calving season, lactation number, lactation stage, animal age, and herd size on milk yield, the 31 chemical composition of raw milk, and Somatic Cell Count (SCC) in Holstein-Friesian cows. 32 Methods: Data were obtained from 15,354 raw milk samples of 5,118 Holstein-Friesian cows 33 at 276 dairy farms in Türkiye. The data analysis was performed using the General Linear Model 34 (GLM) feature of the SPSS statistics program. Results: Mean fat (F), protein (P), dry matter 35 (DM), lactose (L), urea (U), and Log 10 SCC values of cow milk were 3.74 ± 0.01, 3.19 ± 0.01, 36 11.36 ± 0.03, 4.32 ± 0.01%, 21.57 ± 0.28 mg/dL, and 5.244 ± 0.01 cells/mL, respectively. Peak 37 milk yield (PMY), lactation milk yield (LMY), 305-day milk yield (305-d MY), and SCC 38 values were found to be 33.7 ± 0.13, 8,538.33 ± 89.64 kg, 6,479.42 ± 168.96 kg, and 224,164.34 39 ± 4,402.79 cells/mL, respectively. Objective: To determine the effect of 34 ivermectin on the cytokines and immunoglobulins in sheep. Methods: After administration of 35 ivermectin to 10 healthy sheep, sheep-specific interferon-α, tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-36 2, interleukin-6, and interleukin-10, immunoglobulin G, immunoglobulin M, and immunoglobulin 37 E levels were measured with ELISA reader. Results: Statistically significant (p<0.05) fluctuations 38 were detected in interkeukin-2 and interkeukin-10 levels. Transient increases (p<0.05) were 39 measured in tumor necrosis factor-α and immunoglobulin E levels (p<0.05). Objective: To evaluate the effect of several levels of a dietary 24 nano α-tocopherol acetate plus selenium compound (NTS) on growth, intestinal 25 histomorphometry, carcass traits, and immune status of broiler chickens. 26 Methods: A total of 240 one-day-old Ross 308 chickens were randomly divided 27 into four groups, each one containing three pens (n=20 in each pen). Four doses of 28 nano α-tocopherol acetate and SE (0, 5, 7, and 10 mg/kg) were included in the 29 basal diet for 42 days. Results: The final body weight (BW), cumulative body 30 weight gain (BWG), and final feed conversion ratio (FCR) significantly improved 31 when NTS levels were increased (P<0.05). The carcass traits and weight of 32 internal organs enhanced in the groups fed with 7 and 10 mg/kg NTS. With high 33 doses of NTS significantly increased the immune vaccine titers against Newcastle 34 disease (ND), avian influenza (AI) virus, infectious Bursal disease (IBD), and 35 infectious bronchitis (IB). Moreover, dietary addition of NTS improved some 36 intestinal morphometric properties. Conclusion: Thus, NTS (7 and 10 mg/kg) can 37 be added in poultry rations to improve production, carcass characteristics, and 38 immune status of broilers.
