We reviewed the scientific publications on the MTZ with bibliometric tools to detect trends through time and analyze the conceptual structure and historiographic citation. We also performed a content analysis considering the conceptualization of the MTZ, the application of Halffter’s patterns of distribution, and the different disciplines where the term has been used. The number of publications per year has not been constant, but since 2012 there has been a general increase, becoming the MTZ frequently cited in papers and in some cases constituting a research topic. We identified divergences in the conceptualization of the MTZ and discussed the implications for biogeographic studies. Halffter’s conceptualization of the Mexican Transition Zone has inspired other authors to produce research focused on this area and to set biogeographic hypotheses but also to redefine the concept and make it applicable through its incorporation in the biogeographical regionalization of the Americas.","PeriodicalId":49603,"journal":{"name":"Revista Mexicana de Biodiversidad","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2023-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41852258","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Here, we analyzed the spatio-temporal dynamics of the dung beetle assemblages in 4 different environments (primary forest, riparian vegetation, secondary forest, and pasture) in the Bajlum Pakal Community Ecological Reserve, in Chiapas, Mexico. We found that the spatial dynamics showed differences among the analyzed environments, with higher diversity in the tropical rainforest and riparian vegetation. The temporal dynamics did not present a relationship with the richness and diversity of species; therefore, spatial dynamics were more important for explaining the diversity of beetles from all environments. When evaluating the spatial turnover, we found that the most important component of β diversity was β2 (between environments), which suggests that the environmental variation provided by the great spatial heterogeneity of the environments modulates the diversity patterns of beetles in this reserve. Conservation strategies must consider changes in the spatio-temporal dynamics that modulate species assemblages to determine their responses to changes in land use. It is important to maintain the existence of community ecological reserves that conserve biodiversity and connectivity in tropical landscapes, as well as the quality of life of its inhabitants.","PeriodicalId":49603,"journal":{"name":"Revista Mexicana de Biodiversidad","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2023-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44400146","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Con los avances tecnológicos en la secuenciación de alto rendimiento del ADN, el uso del método de metabarcoding se ha incrementado en los últimos años, demostrando tener mayor precisión y alcance taxonómico que otros métodos, además de que permite el análisis simultáneo de un mayor número de muestras en un menor tiempo. En esta revisión, se describen los pasos del método de metabarcoding, discutiendo sus ventajas y limitaciones, así como las alternativas experimentales y analíticas propuestas para atender dichas limitaciones. These forests face several stressors, such as deforestation and climate change, jeopardizing their functional sustainability. Although microbial communities act as key regulators of the soil nutrient cycles, microfungal and bacterial diversity remains largely unknown in this ecosystem. We evaluated cultivable soil microbial diversity associated with the soil below iconic plant taxa (Cyatheaceae and Juglandaceae) in a pristine montane cloud forest of Mexico, and explored small-scale ecological patterns linked to edaphic biogeochemical variables. Our findings revealed the copious occurrence of entomopathogenic fungi such as Tolypocladium geodes and potentially phosphate solubilizer bacteria such as Pseudomonas and Bacillus spp. We observed a strong association between edaphic microbial assemblages and environmental variables such as soil C:N:P availability. This close relationship with the physical setting should be considered for the development of management and in situ conservation strategies aiming to preserve microbial functions.","PeriodicalId":49603,"journal":{"name":"Revista Mexicana de Biodiversidad","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2023-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47347847","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to assess the diversity of pelagic copepods in the ecoregion, we present an inventory based on unpublished data obtained from several oceanographic cruises made in oceanic and neritic waters of Venezuela (1967-1968). We complement this information with previous regional surveys to obtain a revised systematic checklist of the pelagic copepod species in the SCA. We included in our list a total of 346 species and 2 subspecies; up to 11 species represent new records. This study allowed us to: 1) expand the distributional range of some species within the TNWA, 2) record the occurrence, in the SCA, of all species known to 12 of 42 families to occur in the TNWA, 3) determine that the number of species of Corycaeidae and Paracalanidae in the SCA is greater than previously documented for the TNWA. Overall, the species accumulation curve resulting from our data analysis allowed us to determine that the diversity of pelagic copepods is underestimated; our estimations suggest that the potential species number that can be recorded in the SCA is 12 to 48% above the figure herein established.","PeriodicalId":49603,"journal":{"name":"Revista Mexicana de Biodiversidad","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2023-04-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44702530","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

La mayor parte de los macromicetos que se asocian con el nogal pecanero se distribuyen en los primeros horizontes del suelo y la rizosfera de las plantas. Para recolectar los macromicetos asociados al nogal se realizaron recorridos 2 veces por semana, de mayo a octubre de 2018, cubriendo en total 25 ha de una huerta en La Comarca Lagunera, México. A los hongos recolectados se les secuenció la región ITS del ADN ribosomal para corroborar su identificación taxonómica por medio de análisis filogenéticos de máxima verosimilitud y bayesianos. Se encontraron 5 taxones asociados al nogal pecanero, 4 identificados a nivel de especie (Agaricus deserticola, Candolleomyces luteopallidus, Tuber caryophilum y Scleroderma cepa s.l.) y una especie potencialmente nueva (Candolleomyces sp.). De éstos, C. luteopallidus se registra por primera vez en México. De acuerdo con la longitud total (LT), los organismos analizados fueron adultos (LT = 89.8 ± 13.7 cm), quienes presentaron las mayores concentraciones (mg/kg de peso húmedo) de oligoelementos en hígado: zinc (16.23 ± 8.45) > cobre (2.32 ± 0.84); mientras que en músculo: zinc (6.48 ± 2.89) > cobre (0.39 ± 0.14). No se encontraron diferencias significativas en las concentraciones de oligoelementos por tejido entre sexos, ni una correlación significativa con la LT de los organismos. Ambos metales se correlacionaron positivamente en cada tejido. Se registró una biodisminución de 0.22 mg/kg en cobre y 9.58 mg/kg en zinc en el hígado del año 2015 al 2019, probablemente por incremento de metalotioneínas. Las concentraciones de ambos oligoelementos en músculo estuvieron por debajo de los límites máximos establecidos por normas internacionales.
