The present study investigated the diversity and distribution of Hyalella species in subtropical temporary wetlands in the southern Brazilian Coastal Plain. Six species were registered in the study region, including three new species of the genus. The spatial distribution of the species in the study region suggests that the hydrographic region (or freshwater ecoregion) is an important driver of the geographic distribution of the species. Thus, the present study increases to 19 the diversity of species with distribution in the southern region, with one new record for the state of Santa Catarina, one for the state of Rio Grande do Sul, and one for both states. We also expanded the distribution ranges of H. bonariensis, H. castroi, and H. kaingang. In addition, we elaborated a taxonomic key to the species of Hyalella known to southern Brazil. Nessimian","doi":"10.1080/01650521.2023.2168339","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1080/01650521.2023.2168339","url":null,"abstract":"ABSTRACT The genus Austrotinodes Schmid, 1955 has about 70 species described, being largely distributed in the Neotropics and with a few species from the southern USA and Australia. In Brazil, 27 species have been recorded, mainly in the Southeast Region. Herein, we describe and illustrate a new species of Austrotinodes from Rio de Janeiro State. Austrotinodes morumbeca sp. nov. is recognized mainly by the intermediate appendages, which have the apical half smoothly curved dorsally and with about 10 stout spines mesoventrally, plus a single apical spine. We also provide a commented checklist and distributional map of Austrotinodes species from Rio de Janeiro, raising the number of species known for the state to nine.
