The genus Austrotinodes Schmid, 1955 (Insecta: Trichoptera: Ecnomidae) in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, including the description of a new species

Abstract

ABSTRACT The genus Austrotinodes Schmid, 1955 has about 70 species described, being largely distributed in the Neotropics and with a few species from the southern USA and Australia. In Brazil, 27 species have been recorded, mainly in the Southeast Region. Herein, we describe and illustrate a new species of Austrotinodes from Rio de Janeiro State. Austrotinodes morumbeca sp. nov. is recognized mainly by the intermediate appendages, which have the apical half smoothly curved dorsally and with about 10 stout spines mesoventrally, plus a single apical spine. We also provide a commented checklist and distributional map of Austrotinodes species from Rio de Janeiro, raising the number of species known for the state to nine. This work helps to reduce the ‘Wallacean’ and ‘Linnean’ shortfalls by filling knowledge gaps about Austrotinodes in the state of Rio de Janeiro and in the Atlantic Forest. http://www.zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:1BC209F3-7EAE-4EBB-BDBA-DD353D95D68C.
