This research was carried out based on the results of a preliminary study which showed that students' mathematical communication skills in statistics material were stull low. This study aims to determine students' difficulties in solving application problems. The research method used in this research is qualitative. This research was conducted in an elementary school in West Bandung Regency with 32 V class students as subjects. The instruments used in this study were a descprition test consisting of four questions and interviews. The indicators of mathematical communication used are : (1) Expressing everyday events in symbols or mathematical language, (2) Explain ideas, situations, and mathematical relations with real objects, pictures, graphs, and algebra, (3) Expressing images in the form of ordinary language, (4) Read with comprehension a written mathematical presentation The results of the study show that students still have difficulty communicating the given application problems, especially in making diagrams. Students feel confused in communicating from ordinary forms into diagrammatic forms. Students are confused in determining the value and frequency in the form of a diagram. students also have difficulty reading diagrams and changing the results of the diagrams into ordinary language.","PeriodicalId":493807,"journal":{"name":"Journal of innovative mathematics learning","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134960819","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

That one of the competency standards for graduates of the mathematics subject for elementary to secondary education units is so that students have the skills to think and act creatively, productively, critically, independently, collaboratively and communicatively. Based on these graduate competencies, it is clear that one of the thinking skills that students must have is critical thinking. The purpose of this study was to look at students' mathematical critical thinking skills whose learning used the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model through digital teaching materials . This study uses the Research and Development (R&D) method with the ADDIE development model which consists of 5 (five) stages, namely: Analysis , Design , and Development , Implementation and Evaluation on MTs . The research subjects were 20 students of class VI I I MTS (twenty) students. Data collection techniques used were walkthroughs, questionnaires, questionnaires, interviews, and tests. Research data were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The results of data analysis are known that this research produces students' critical thinking mathematics for digital teaching materials through a problem-based learning model in a flat sided geometric content that is valid and has potential effects. In this case, mathematics teaching materials that are presented digitally with a problem-based learning approach model are obtained from the results of one-to-one revisions , expert revision, small group trials and large group trials . Furthermore, the prototype of digital teaching materials is in the form of Google sites This is in addition to being effective, efficient, valid and practical, it also has a potential effect to improve students' critical thinking skills in mathematics.","PeriodicalId":493807,"journal":{"name":"Journal of innovative mathematics learning","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134960964","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, many students struggle to develop these skills due to a lack of understanding, critical thinking abilities, practice, and motivation. To address this, educators need to adopt teaching strategies that strengthen students' problem-solving skills. One effective approach is the scientific learning model, which emphasizes the scientific process, critical thinking, collaboration, and real-world applications. This study aims to assess the improvement of seventh-grade students' mathematical problem-solving skills using the scientific learning model. The research utilizes a descriptive quantitative approach with a two-group pretest-posttest design. The sample consists of seventh-grade students from an Islamic Junior High School, and data collection includes pretest and posttest questions. The N-gain formula is used to measure improvement. The findings indicate a significant improvement in problem-solving abilities among students who receive instruction using the scientific learning model compared to those who do not. The improvement is categorized as moderate in the experimental class, while the control class shows a lower level of improvement. Factors such as students' enthusiasm, implementation of real-life problems, and increased independence contribute to the improvement in students' problem-solving abilities. The implementation of the scientific learning model significantly enhances students' mathematical problem-solving skills. Based on the field findings, there is a need for improvement in soft skills to support meaningful learning activities.","PeriodicalId":493807,"journal":{"name":"Journal of innovative mathematics learning","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134958786","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
