The particular glitter is composed of thin layers of plastic and metal. This study assessed the acute toxicity of glitter dispersions in the brine shrimp Artemia sp. Nauplii of Artemia sp. that were exposed to glitter dispersions (0.01, 0.1, 1, 10, and 100 mg/L), obtained by diluting a stock solution in seawater; the control consisted of filtered seawater only. Three replicates were used per treatment and consisted of glass tubes filled with 10 mL of the test solution, and ten nauplii aging over 48 h. After 48 h, the survivors were counted and examined under a microscope. The mean size of glitter particles was 3.94 (±0.98) µm; approximately 44 % of particles were in the range of very fine sand, and 27 % coarse silt. Significant lethal effects (p < 0.05) occurred from 0.1 mg/L (Lowest Observed Effect Concentration - LOEC); the lethal concentration to 50 % organisms (LC50-48h) was 0.350 (0.348 - 0.351) mg/L. The exposed organisms also exhibited patches in their digestive tracts, and particles were stranded in their appendices. The results indicate the toxic potential of glitter to brine shrimp. In this study, we approach the phenomenon from the fishers’ perspective. This study aims to explore the perception and knowledge of local fishers regarding fishing practices. With the help of interviews and focus group discussions with residents of three fishing communities located along the Indian Ocean coast in Tanzania, the research discovered that these local fishers are not just engaged in catching fish; they also possess a valuable understanding of the ocean and fishing practices. The study concludes that incorporating the perception and knowledge of these local fishermen into future fisheries management initiatives could be highly beneficial. However, recent studies and science projects have reported MPs in both water and sediment in the South Polar Regions. These reports state that MP pollution occurs in this region due to fishing, tourism, and research activities by the nearby countries, with natural circulation also part of it. The Antarctic Treaty System (ATS) has given attention to MP pollution and has initiated research on it. MPs are tiny plastic particles with a size of less than 5 mm. They have two types: 1. Primary MPs, which have been manufactured directly from various applications like cosmetics and scrubbing, etc. 2. Secondary MPs, which are generated by the photochemical degradation of large plastics. Although several studies have been done, there is a quite gap in our understanding of the concentration, characteristics, and impact of plastics on the ecosystem of the Antarctic Region. The impact of MP pollution in this region may be very high. The presence of MPs is a serious issue that is affecting not only the aquatic environment but also humans. It is an alarming situation that causes environmental damage. The main objective of this paper is to review MP introduction, occurrence in biotic and abiotic components, sources, harmful effects, and detection methods/techniques. This review highlights the various methodologies and analyses like density separation, microscope observation of MP’s properties Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Raman spectrometer, respectively, and urges for more research in the future, giving several recommendations to maintain the pristine region near Antarctica. The study contributes to the existing knowledge by incorporating ESG scores and looking at factors that indicate financial strength. The contribution of our study will lie in complementing and adding to the existing knowledge, along with further incentivizing sustainable firm performance. This study discovers that a positive relationship between ESG disclosure, firm value, and firm performance exists, as determined by market-to-book ratio and Q ratio, respectively. It considers a panel regression examination, by means of a sample of 213 publicly listed ports and considering a time period of 5 years. This study will benefit scholars, decision-makers, legislators, and stakeholders of ports through improving their comprehension of how ESG disclosure affects the performance of firms, in general and specifically for each pillar. Highlights The aim of the present study is to examine the impact of ESG (environmental, social, and governance) disclosure on the performance of firms that are engaged in port-related operations. More specifically, our focus is on three types of companies, namely, a port company/authority, a terminal operator/stevedore, and an integrated carrier The present study has found that a favorable correlation exists between ESG disclosure, firm value, and firm performance, as gauged by the market-to-book ratio and Q ratio, correspondingly The study conducts a panel regression analysis, utilizing a sample of 213 publicly listed ports over a time period of five years This study will be advantageous to scholars, decision-makers, legislators and stakeholders in the port industry, as it enhances their understanding of how ESG disclosure impacts firm performance, both globally and within each distinct pillar","PeriodicalId":489022,"journal":{"name":"Maritime Technology and Research","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135789537","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Design/approach: The present paper (as a Case Study) examined three large shipping container companies that have played a crucial role in global trade over the years. These are three of the largest in 2023 (Hapag Lloyd, COSCO Shipping Lines, and Maersk). The criteria of these selected companies were mainly the authors’ focus on the significance for the industry of the mentioned three large shipping container companies, as well as the volume of information that could gathered by secondary data sources. Secondary data was collected by reviewing the existing branding literature as discussed in academic and trade journals, books, information databases, professional magazines, government publications, and specialized internet sites (Emerald, Science Direct, Google Scholar, and Scirus). Findings: This research identified that large shipping container companies do not solely adopt Cost Leadership, Differentiation, or Focus Strategy when planning their competitive strategies. Consequently, the decision of competitive strategy choice by large shipping container companies is not a trichotomous one between complete Cost Leadership, Differentiation, or Focus Strategy, but is a matter of combination. Many macro- and micro-environmental and organizational factors have a bearing on such decisions. This study identified that the balance of combination is dependent upon a number of reasons and factors, such as (mainly) macro- and micro-environmental factors, company resources and capabilities, customers’ willing to pay, barriers in the shipping liner industry, and revenue and cost approaches. Research limitations/ implications: The study contains several shortcomings. The theoretical view may contain conceptual elements which hinder more specific observations, e.g., the exhaustive examination of the industry’s competition elements based on Porter’s five forces rivalry view about competition between companies: (1) Rivalry between Existing Competitors, (2) Threat of New Entry, (3) Threat of Substitution, (4) Buyers’ Bargaining Power, and (5) Suppliers’ Bargaining Power. There is a recommendation for future research, which will be on how other large shipping container companies have dealt mainly with the post global financial crisis, as well as the post pandemic era, in terms of a competitive strategies approach having been adopted. This could include qualitative or quantitative research, along with a larger number of case study approaches (and not only large shipping container companies, but medium","PeriodicalId":489022,"journal":{"name":"Maritime Technology and Research","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135722398","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As part of new requirements set by the International Association of Classification Societies, ship operators must now maintain an asset inventory aboard vessels specifically to improve their cyber security. This paper discusses the development of a ship-specific asset profiler that will not only identify and record the devices present automatically but also provide an in-depth analysis of their properties and characteristics in an intelligent and user-friendly manner. As cyberattacks increase in the maritime industry, proper testing of ship systems is essential, to ensure vessels remain secure and the risk of a cyberattack is minimized. An asset profiler for the bridge environment would serve as a tool for profiling the devices, helping personnel make faster and well-informed decisions, and could be a component of a wider audit framework. This paper presents a ship bridge profiler (i.e., BridgeInsight) used to identify all devices on the bridge of a vessel automatically and which provides information on them using a generated PDF report that consists of graphs and charts. To do this, it uses the Random Forest classifier algorithm, and the information it provides will enable the auditor or pen tester to perform manual testing or automate audits, while also providing comprehensive information that engineers and mariners can use to comply with regulations. Highlights As part of new requirements set by the International Association of Classification Societies, ship operators must now maintain asset inventory aboard vessels specifically to improve their cyber security. The uniqueness of the platform is the presence of the ball joints between the legs and deck, which partially restrain the transfer of rotations from the legs to the deck and vice-versa. However, displacements such as surge, sway, and heave motions are transferred, ensuring a rigid connection between the legs and the deck. Efficient operations of offshore wind turbines are more dependent on the support systems on which they are mounted. Increased stability and reduction in stress concentration in rigid connections are desirable. Nonlinear dynamic response analysis is carried out in FAST by coupling the frequency response of the platform obtained in ANSYS AQWA with that of the HydroDyn module of FAST. The current study investigates a fully coupled three-dimensional hydro-aerodynamic model of triceratops mounted with a horizontal axis wind turbine. Unsteady Blade Element Momentum theory (BEM) is used to estimate the aerodynamic loads, which encompasses the effect of wind shear using a power law and spatially coherent turbulence. In contrast, Morison equations are used to estimate the hydrodynamic loads on the platform. After the preliminary proportioning of the platform, Response Amplitude Operator (RAO) plots are drawn to illustrate the partial motion transfer between the deck and the buoyant legs. Based on the preliminary studies, it is seen that the environmental loads do not impose instability, reinforcing the dynamic stability of the platform. Frequency responses for operating and parked conditions illustrate the coupling between the degrees of freedom and the influence of the rotor motion of the wind turbine on the platform deck. Tether tension variation is assessed in all three legs for the operational sea states to check the safety standards for a compliant system to avoid tether pull-out. Zinc is one of the toxicants from various industrial and domestic activities whose waste is directly discharged into water. One of the marine organisms used as an indicator of pollution is the blue swimming crab (Portunus pelagicus). Bioaccumulation studies of Zn in Portunus pelagicus from Jakarta Bay were conducted in a radiotracer laboratory. Laboratory experiments were done to study the uptake and release of 65Zn radioisotope in Portunus pelagicus. The experiments conducted were biota collection, acclimatization, bioaccumulation, and elimination. This study was to determine the relationship between the amount of 65Zn released into the aquatic environment and its effect on Zn bioaccumulation ability and radiation dose received by Portunus pelagicus. Biokinetics parameters, such as concentration factors CF, uptake rate constant ku, elimination rate constant ke, and concentration factor steady state (CFss) were investigated. The results showed that an increase in concentration would decrease the rate of absorption and rate of elimination, and that the concentration factor CF values varied from 7.82 - 60.62 ml.g-1 in Portunus pelagicus. The concentration factor at steady-state Zn was 25.55-59.47 ml.g–1, which is influenced by the concentration after 6 days of exposure. The depuration rate was observed to be high, with a value of retention 34.33 - 78.88 % of 65Zn absorbed by Portunus pelagicus, which was absent 7 days after exposure. Highlights Laboratory experiments lasting 14 days showed that Portunus pelagicus has the ability to accumulate the heavy metal zinc (Zn) from the environment and release it back into the water The highest bioaccumulation kinetics of zinc (Zn) metal in Portunus pelagicus during the 7-day experiment occurred at a contaminant concentration of 0.5 ppm with an absorption constant (ku) value of 0.7838 d-1 and a release constant value (ke) of 0.0892 d-1 Portunus pelagicus concentration factor (CF) has a moderate value and the smallest uptake constant (ku) and elimination constant (ke) value compared to other biota","PeriodicalId":489022,"journal":{"name":"Maritime Technology and Research","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134972972","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This role shows that fisher catches are necessary to support regional needs, so that the fishing process up to the dimensions of fishing also helps the catch potential. The measurements of the fishing gear refer to the type of fishing gear, the type of vessel (GT), the number of boxes, and the number of fishers who act as crew members (ABK) during the fishing process. This study aims to measure the influence of the dimensions of fishing gear on the catches obtained by fishers at the Karangantu Archipelago Fisheries Port. The research method uses quantitative methods, based on the results of linear regression of the dependent and independent variables, and interviews in data collection. The results show that the variables of ship weight, number of boxes, and number of crew members had a common effect, 0.35 or 35 %, on fish catches. The low coefficient indicates the influence of the dimensions of the fishing gear is not always the primary determinant. There are 65 % physical and production variables to maximize the dimensions of the fishing gear to support increased catches. Based on this influence analysis, it can be used as a reference for maximizing the dimensions of fisher fishing gear to support increased catches, given the role of Karangantu Archipelago Fisheries Port as a supplier of fish at the provincial level. Highlights The field survey time is essential to decide due to habitual results because of weather differences All fishers observed are using rampus nets (bottom gill net) as their fishing gear Correlation between fishing gear dimensions and daily fish catches analyzed with statistical quantitative methods by linear regression The fish gear dimension does not significantly affect daily fish catches, proven by the low coefficient of determination (R-squared) of 0.35 Other factors that affect daily fish catches of fishers are location, environmental conditions, and physical water","PeriodicalId":489022,"journal":{"name":"Maritime Technology and Research","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135364237","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
