The low product selectivity is an urgent issue. Here, we found that the hydroxyl (-OH) on CeO 2 can significantly enhance CO selectivity. After hydroxyl modification, the CO faraday efficiency (FE CO ) was surprisingly increased by 188% (relative increase rate). The correlation coefficient between -OH quantity and FE CO is as high as 0.98. Further study indicated that the presence of -OH can lead to a more compact electrochemical double layer (EDL) and charge transfer resistance by proton transfer. The -OH can also enhance CO 2 adsorption and stabilize the intermediate species (*COOH). DFT results further demonstrate that the rate-determining step was proton transfer from the surface -OH to MEACOO − , -OH modification can reduce the energy barrier to as low as 0.39 eV. This work provides additional insights into improving selectivity in amine-based cCO 2 RR, advancing the development of ICCU technology.","PeriodicalId":488328,"journal":{"name":"Carbon Neutrality","volume":"5 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2026-01-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s43979-025-00157-4.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147897455","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Among the various methods for converting CMHR, hydrothermal technology is gaining increased attention due to its high conversion efficiency; however, this approach is constrained by relatively high temperature requirements. Here, we propose a low-temperature method for the hydrothermal conversion of CMHR into mineral-like artificial humic acids (HA a ). Utilizing a temperature of 150 °C in the presence of added oxygen, we achieved a yield of humic acids of 31.25%. Time-resolved Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy showed the HA a was comprised of carbonyl functionalities and aromatic structural characteristics that closely resembled those of natural humic acids. Investigations by 13 C NMR and XPS revealed that oxygen injection facilitated the oxidation of carbon species and formation of carboxylic acid groups to promote the stabilization of nitrogen functionalities through the Maillard reaction. These results show that CMHR can be utilized as a feedstock for humic acid synthesis reactions that leverage oxygen to enhance hydrothermal humification. The hydrothermal performance of this approach is comparable to the highest yields of HA a reported using high temperatures (> 180 °C) and long reaction times (> 7 h), demonstrating that this method can be used for the sustainable production of high-quality artificial humic analogs.","PeriodicalId":488328,"journal":{"name":"Carbon Neutrality","volume":"4 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s43979-025-00127-w.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147331497","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study evaluates hydrate-based CO₂ capture technologies for flue gas decarbonization through experimental investigations and process simulations. Hydrate formation and dissociation experiments examined two configurations: a two-stage high-pressure formation process using the kinetic promoter sodium p-styrenesulfonate, which achieved a 53.65% CO₂ removal rate and reduced concentration from 20 mol% to 9.27 mol%, and a three-stage low-pressure formation process employing both kinetic and thermodynamic promoters (TBAB and cyclopentane), attaining a 64.66% removal rate and lowering CO₂ concentration to 9.11 mol%. Complementary to the experimental data, process simulations was conducted by the Aspen HYSYS and Aspen EDR. Then the comprehensive 4E (Energy, Exergy, Economy, and Environment) analysis identified the Low-Pressure Formation with Atmospheric Dissociation (L-A) configuration as the most effective approach. The L-A process exhibited the lowest total energy consumption of 240,077 MJ/h and the highest exergy efficiency of 0.725. Economically, it presented significantly lower equipment and operational costs compared to high-pressure alternatives. Environmentally, the L-A configuration maintained indirect CO₂ emission ratios below one, indicating a net positive impact. These results suggest that the L-A process offers a balanced and efficient solution for industrial-scale CO₂ capture, combining technical feasibility, cost-effectiveness, and environmental sustainability.","PeriodicalId":488328,"journal":{"name":"Carbon Neutrality","volume":"4 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s43979-025-00125-y.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147881505","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we compared the catalytic activity of several Cl-containing compounds and found that LiCl exhibited superior performance. The effects of solvent, catalyst dosage, reaction temperature, and reaction time on the synthesis of 3A5AF were investigated. Under the optimized conditions, about 60% yields of 3A5AF were obtained in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) or dimethylacetamide (DMA) medium. The spent LiCl and DMA could be recycled and reused, without obvious decrease of 3A5AF yield. Moreover, the formed 3A5AF could be purified by a facile procedure. Experiment results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that homogeneous Cl − was vital for 3A5AF formation. This study provides an example for the effective conversion of chitin biomass to value-added compounds.","PeriodicalId":488328,"journal":{"name":"Carbon Neutrality","volume":"4 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-02-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s43979-025-00120-3.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147330761","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this work, transition metal sulfides (TMS)-decorated CuS microflower-like structures were prepared via the one-pot hydrothermal synthesis method for ECR to CO, and the influence of TMS doping on ECR performance was demonstrated. Characterization of the catalysts was performed using XRD, FESEM-EDS, N 2 physisorption, and XPS, revealing the successful loading of TMS, the formation of microflower-like architectures and the generation of sulfur vacancies. Electrochemical tests demonstrated that doping ZnS, Bi 2 S 3 , CdS and MoS 2 improved the intrinsic CO 2 reduction activity of the CuS catalyst. Particularly, the MoS 2 -CuS composite catalyst with imperfect petal-like structure showed uniform distribution of edge Mo sites, which worked synergistically with the formed grain boundaries (GBs) and undercoordinated S vacancy sites in promoting CO 2 activation, stabilizing * COOH adsorption, facilitating * CO desorption, and lowering the energy barrier of the potential-limiting step for improved CO selectivity. The MoS 2 -CuS catalyst achieved a maximum CO selectivity of 83.2% at –0.6 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and a high CO cathodic energetic efficiency of 100%. At this potential, the catalyst maintained stable catalytic activity and CO selectivity during a 333-min electrolysis process. The findings will offer a promising avenue for the development of efficient and stable catalysts for CO production from ECR.","PeriodicalId":488328,"journal":{"name":"Carbon Neutrality","volume":"3 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s43979-024-00097-5.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147908770","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
