Expounding on the (secondary) status of women, translators, and children’s literature, this study draws on how female translators address the translation of children’s literature by analyzing Helen Wang’s renowned Chinese-English translation of Bronze and Sunflower. There are many studies on this translation from different perspectives, which includes translation strategies. Nevertheless, few studies have approached translation strategies from the lens of feminism. Hence, the present article aims to address two issues by taking Helen Wang’s translation as a case study:1) What feminist strategies did Wang employ when translating this book? 2) Did Wang hereby display feminist consciousness? To this end, Delabastita’s (1993) taxonomy on translation strategies was adopted to analyze the parallel corpus selected from the original work and its translated version. Overall, the analysis uncovered evidence of the use of these five strategies: substitution, repetition, deletion, addition, and permutation, which suggests that Helen Wang had a feminist approach while translating. Through these feminist translation strategies, she intervened in girls’ passive image and women’s secondary status, and erasing the values they violate, hence the demonstration of her feminist consciousness. This study may lead to a greater focus on feminist translation strategies in children’s literature, with its findings providing a reference for researchers in translation as well as for translators of children’s literature. Suggestions for future research are outlined at the end of the article.","PeriodicalId":487362,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Language, Literacy and Translation","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136279955","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In literary translation, especially poetry, translating thoughts and emotions in classical Chinese that preserve the artistic conception of the source text could be one of the main challenges that literary translators face. In this study, Yan Fu's translation theory was employed to analyze the translations of classical Chinese poetry and identify the dominant principle in translating classical Chinese poetry to English. Ten classical Chinese poems were selected purposefully to describe the translatability features of the classical Chinese poems into English qualitatively. The artistic conception and polysemes were analyzed and exemplified to explore how they were portrayed. Descriptions of how footnotes were used in creating the artistic conception in the English translation of the selected classical Chinese poems were provided. The findings indicated that the use of polysemy and footnotes can help to maintain the artistic conception in the English translations of classical Chinese poetry. Application of Yan Fu's translation theory may enhance the quality of translated classical Chinese.","PeriodicalId":487362,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Language, Literacy and Translation","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136342622","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

All groups received the same material and instruction time. Two concept-mapping groups used pictorial concept-mapping techniques, while the translation group memorized collocations with their Farsi equivalents. After ten weeks, an immediate post-test was administered to test the first hypothesis. The results shows that the collaborative concept mapping group performed the best. A delayed post-test was given after three weeks to test the second hypothesis, and the findings indicate that the collaborative pictorial concept-mapping group performed better than the other two groups. This research suggests that using pictorial concept mapping in a cooperative learning environment has a positive impact on the retention of collocations for both short-term and long-term periods.","PeriodicalId":487362,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Language, Literacy and Translation","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136280436","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This means that it can shift and change at any given time. The concept of gender queer has been broadly accepted in many Western countries, such as the United States, but it has not been widely introduced in China. As the media is a means of exchanging cultures and knowledge, an English film about queer gender is a critical aspect for Chinese people who are only beginning to gain access to related knowledge. Linguistic techniques, cultural elements, and ideological differences determine subtitle translation. These cultural and ideological connotations often reflect assumptions that may vary from one culture to another, revealing different ways of understanding and expression. A small bilingual parallel corpus with subtitles of 10 queer films is investigated here, aiming to see the cultural difference and to analyse translation strategies for translating the culture-loaded words and expressions. Words and expressions related to gender queer are selected for analysis, including “lesbian”, “dyke”, “butch”, “gay”, “faggot”, “poofter”, “camp”, “bisexuality”, “transgender”, and “transvestite”. It is critical for subtitlers to translate gender queer films from a queer perspective, follow Vinay and Darblenet’s translation model and try to soften, desexualize, and sanitize the culture-loaded words and expressions, and make sure translators do not add extra negative attitudes and ideology into the translation. Only by maintaining a “neutral attitude” throughout the translation process can these subtitles positively enhance audiences' understanding and acceptance of gender queer people.","PeriodicalId":487362,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Language, Literacy and Translation","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136279782","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This brief aims to explore the significance of speaking English during job interviews in Malaysia, focusing on its impact on employability and career opportunities. The objective of this study is to examine how speaking English during job interviews affects employability in Malaysia. It attempts to identify company expectations and ascertain how well-rounded English language abilities affect employment possibilities. A mixed-methods strategy will be used to achieve this goal. A literature study will be done first to acquire information from previously conducted research on the topic. Furthermore, a series of online surveys will be conducted with Malaysian companies to get their perspectives on the significance of English language skills in the context of job interviews. The data collected will be analysed to identify common themes and patterns. The findings of this research are expected to highlight the importance of English-speaking skills in Malaysian job interviews. Employers are expected to place significant value on candidates who can communicate fluently in English, as it is seen as a crucial skill for effective collaboration, customer service, and international business interactions. The study may also reveal specific industries or job roles where English proficiency is particularly desirable. In conclusion, the ability to speak English proficiently during job interviews positively impacts employability in Malaysia. Employers often prioritise candidates who can communicate effectively in English, enhancing their chances of success in diverse work environments and global business interactions. By recognising the importance of English-speaking skills and investing in language proficiency, job seekers can enhance their employability and open doors to a wider range of career opportunities in Malaysia.","PeriodicalId":487362,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Language, Literacy and Translation","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136280305","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
