Focusing specifically on skilled professionals’ migration in pursuit of enhanced opportunities, the research scrutinizes how media influences their decisions to emigrate, analyzing news coverage and perspectives on migration as factors influencing economic status and quality of life.Against the backdrop of a burgeoning body of scholarly research highlighting the media’s substantial influence on public perceptions and attitudes toward migration, this study contributes by delving into the intricate relationship between media narratives and brain drain perceptions. It examines news coverage and occupation trends, paying special attention to potential stereotypes reinforcing the dichotomy of “skilled leaving” versus “unskilled staying.” The analytical framework integrates concepts from framing, agenda-setting, social constructivism, and critical discourse on globalization perspectives.Empirical data have been collected from a comprehensive sample of 50 Albanian news articles specifically related to brain drain. The synthesis of theoretical approaches and existing scientific studies in this domain complements the data collection. The findings shed light on the media’s capacity to shape perceptions of migration, particularly its influence on professions and quality standards. The study emphasizes the imperative of balanced and objective framing in media discourse to mitigate biases against professionals opting to remain in their home countries. Anticipated contributions include nuanced insights into the complex relationship between media, brain drain, and public perceptions, adding depth to the existing literature.","PeriodicalId":487205,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences","volume":"15 11","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140414291","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Answers given to five open-ended questions directed to the participants in our survey, with 513 participants between April and June 2022, were used. Data were analyzed following content analysis.Results: A total of 506 responses were analyzed. The mean age of the participants was 39.9 ± 8.8 years (54.2% men, 77.5% medical doctors). Almost all participants reported that the political atmosphere in Turkey forced them to migrate. Some participants were unable to do their jobs due to the increasing violence in the health system in recent years. Most participants saw migration as the only way out, as they did not feel free and safe. Comparatively, they were in a better economic situation in Turkey and had a higher standard of living.Conclusion: Migration creates a sense of security while at the same time accepting a lower standard of living. To organize the sustainable migration of professionals, it is beneficial to ask what framework conditions need to be created and to access the labor market in particular.","PeriodicalId":487205,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences","volume":"39 11","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140425592","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This reality and the lack of data in this field in developing countries brought this paper’s authors to investigate the extent to which female and male students are enrolled and graduate in engineering education faculties in the Republic of Benin, a West African country. To this end, statistics of enrolment, graduation, failure, and exclusion of female and male students of the two oldest engineering education faculties, i.e., the Polytechnics School of Abomey-Calavi (EPAC) and the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences (FSA) of the University of Abomey-Calavi (UAC), have been estimated using Excel software and available enrolment, and academic results’ books and database. Pedagogical bylaws and other education policy documents were also reviewed for the sake of understanding the gender participation trends of the studied faculties. The analysis of almost four decades (1985–2022) of data revealed that very few (about 4,912, including 694 women) students got enrolled in the engineering programmes of the studied faculties. The total number of engineering students enrolled in the two faculties represents less than 1% of the total number of those who got their baccalaureate over the study period. Of the total number of women enrolled over the four decades, about 25% got excluded, while only about 22% of men got excluded at the polytechnic school EPAC. Meanwhile, at the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences FSA, 2% of the women enrolled were excluded against 1% of men. These results show that students are more excluded in the industrial engineering programmes of the polytechnic school compared to the agricultural engineering programmes of FSA. The main reasons identified for the small number of students enrolled in the engineering education faculties were, among others, the limited number of scholarships and places given to the engineering programmes by the government, donors and the faculties due to limitations in infrastructure and other resources available. With regards to the very poor participation of women in engineering programmes, socio-cultural stereotypes, poor social support or care provided to ladies and women, poor gender-responsiveness of STEM education and pedagogies, poor and late information on the advantages of engineering education and careers, sexual harassment, and early pregnancy, are few of the reasons mentioned by interviewees. More advocacy and more gender-responsiveness of further interventions might help improve the overall number of engineering students and the participation of women and other valid but less-represented people in engineering education programmes in universities of the Republic of Benin.","PeriodicalId":487205,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences","volume":"17 22","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140430244","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
