Nevertheless, there are a lot of students who still got difficulties when it comes to listening activity. One of the solution to solve listening problem is to use the existance of media, namely song and podcast to help students improving their listening comprehension. In this paper, researcher employed quantitative method with quasi-experimental design using two-group pretest-posttest. The aim of this research were: (1) to find out whether there was a significant difference in achievement of students’ listening skills after being taught by using song and those who were taught by using podcast, and (2) to find out which media that gave more significant effect in students’ listening skills. The data was analyzed by using Independent Sample t-test in SPSS 20. This paper showed that there was significant difference in achievement of students’ listening skills between the students who were taught by using song and those who were taught by using podcast. From the results of the data, teaching listening through podcast gave more significant effect to increase students’ listening skills.</p><p class=\"abstrak\" align=\"left\"><strong>Keywords:</strong> song, podcast, listening skills</p><p class=\"abstrak\" align=\"center\"><strong>Abstrak </strong></p><p> </p><p><em>Keterampilan mendengarkan selalu digunakan dalam kegiatan sehari-hari. Meskipun demikian, masih banyak siswa yang mengalami kesulitan dalam kegiatan mendengarkan. Salah satu solusi untuk memecahkan masalah mendengarkan adalah dengan menggunakan media, yaitu lagu dan podcast untuk membantu siswa meningkatkan pemahaman mendengarkan mereka. Dalam penelitian ini peneliti menggunakan metode kuantitatif dengan desain eksperimen semu dengan membandingkan menggunakan two-group pretest-posttest. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah: (1) untuk mengetahui apakah ada perbedaan yang signifikan dalam pencapaian keterampilan mendengarkan siswa setelah diajar dengan menggunakan lagu dan mereka yang diajar dengan menggunakan podcast, dan (2) untuk mengetahui media apa yang memberikan pengaruh yang lebih signifikan dalam keterampilan mendengarkan siswa. Data dianalisis dengan menggunakan Independent Sample t-test di SPSS 20. Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ada perbedaan yang signifikan dalam pencapaian keterampilan mendengarkan siswa antara siswa yang diajar dengan menggunakan lagu dan mereka yang diajar dengan menggunakan podcast. {"title":"Automatic Analysis of Lexical Complexity: Evaluating The Linguistic Performance of The National and International Publication","authors":"Laily Martin, Lucy Suraiya, Almaghvirah Chan","doi":"10.30983/mj.v3i1.6280","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.30983/mj.v3i1.6280","url":null,"abstract":"<p>This research is a kind of a comparison study that deals with lexical complexity in the Indonesian scholars’ journal articles. The analysis covers 98 journal articles from the national and international publication using 25 lexical complexity indices. Results of the research showed that the journal articles of international journals have higher mean scores of lexical complexity indices than the national, but significant differences only occurred in the indices for the lexical sophistication and lexical variation, particularly the type-token ratio and verb variation. This may show the performance gap between the two publications from Indonesian academics as to share the lexical characteristic of the international publication surpass the national.</p><p><em>Studi komparatif ini membahas lexical complexity dari artikel-artikel jurnal yang dihasilkan para penulis Indonesia. Analisis dilakukan terhadap 98 artikel jurnal terbitan nasional dan internasional dengan memakai 25 indeks lexical complexity. Hasil penelitian memperlihatkan bahwa artikel-artikel jurnal terbitan internasional memiliki rerata indeks lexical complexity lebih tinggi dibanding terbitan nasional, namun perbedaan signifikan hanya terdapat pada indeks-indeks lexical sophistication dan lexical variation, terutama pada rasio type-token dan verb variation. This research was about finding out the effect of using silent ways on students’ vocabulary mastery at the 7<sup>th</sup> grade in MTsS PPM Diniyyah Pasia. This research used experimental research. The researcher used a quasi-experimental design employing pre-test and post-test control designs. The population of this research was at the seventh grade of MTsS PPM Diniyyah Pasia. The sample was VII.2 which was treated as the experimental class and VII.4 was treated as the control class. The findings in this research showed that the t-obtained (-7.951) was lower than the t-table (-1.667). In other words, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted which means that there was a significant effect of using The Effect of Using silent ways on students‘ vocabulary ability. Then, the calculation of post-test of both classes showed that the experimental and control classes obtained (-4.587) were lower than t-table (-1.667). It can be concluded that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted which means that there is a significant difference between using silent way and using conventional technique. Thus, it can be concluded that the entire hypothesis is accepted. It is proved that the use of silent ways of learning vocabulary can help the students master the vocabulary well.</p><p class=\"abstrak\" align=\"left\"> </p><p class=\"abstrak\" align=\"center\"><strong>Abstrak </strong></p><p> </p><p><em>Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh beberapa masalah, yaitu siswa kelas 7 MTsS PPM Diniyyah Pasia memiliki jumlah kosakata yang terbatas dan guru masih menggunakan metode konvensional di mana siswa hanya fokus mendengarkan penjelasan guru. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh penggunaan metode silent way terhadap penguasaan kosakata siswa kelas 7 MTsS PPM Diniyyah Pasia. Penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian eksperimen. Peneliti menggunakan desain kuasi eksperimen dengan menggunakan desain kontrol pretest dan posttest. Populasi penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas VII MTsS PPM Diniyyah Pasia. Sampel penelitian ini adalah kelas VII.2 yang diperlakukan sebagai kelas eksperimen dan kelas VII.4 sebagai kelas kontrol. Temuan dalam penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa t-hitung (-7,951) lebih kecil dari t-tabel (-1,667). Sehingga hipotesis alternatif (Ha) diterima yang berarti terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan dari penggunaan metode silent way terhadap kemampuan kosakata siswa. Kemudian, perhitungan post-test kedua kelas yaitu kelas eksperimen dan kelas kontrol diperoleh t hitung (-4,587) lebih kecil dari t tabel (-1,667).
