Mauricio Herrera-López","doi":"10.1016/j.ijintrel.2025.102196","DOIUrl":"10.1016/j.ijintrel.2025.102196","url":null,"abstract":"<div><div>Ethnic-cultural bullying among schoolchildren is a harmful, discriminatory practice, which is particularly difficult to combat educationally both because it involves a sociocultural dimension closely linked to social identity, and because few validated, reliable instruments have been developed to evaluate and study it. The aims of this research were to validate a scale for measuring ethnic-cultural bullying, fine-tune its specificity, and examine its prevalence in a multicultural school population from Ecuador. A sample of 17,309 students, representative of the adolescent student population in Higher Basic General Education and Baccalaureate, completed the EBIPQ-ECD. The validation showed a two-dimensional structure featuring ethnic-cultural victimization and ethnic-cultural aggression, and had optimal psychometric properties. There were also evident differences in the prevalence of ethnic-cultural bullying in adolescents depending on the ethnic-cultural group, with Afro-descendants and indigenous people more often involved, and whites and mestizos less so, which is consistent with the theory of social dominance. This study sought to examine the direct effects of National Identity (NI) on Ethnic Identity (EI) and Multiculturalism (M), as well as the indirect effect of NI on EI through M. To achieve this aim, the study employed the national identity questionnaire of <span><span>Yuan and Li (2019)</span></span>, the ethnic identity questionnaire of <span><span>Yuan and Li (2019)</span></span>, and the multiculturalism scale of Fuertes et al. (2000). The instruments were validated through Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) before being administered to 467 English as foreign language (EFL) university students. The findings indicated non-significant direct effect of National Identity (NI) on students' Ethnic Identity (EI), whereas NI significantly impacted Multiculturalism (M). Furthermore, M significantly influenced students' EI and mediated an indirect effect of NI on EI. The results also revealed noticeable differences across gender, age, and academic level groups for NI and M. For EI, statistical differences were found across gender and level groups. Notably, all comparisons in NI, except for gender and level variables, were statistically significant. Additionally, EI and M identified significant differences between age and level, gender and age, gender and level so as the combined gender-age-level groups. By underpinning the concepts of acculturation expectations, intergroup ideologies, IC competence, and original cultural identity negotiation, this study navigates mainland Chinese students’ vivid stories regarding two primary domains: (a) acculturative challenges and IC gaps after arrival and (b) original cultural identity negotiation to promote IC competence in HK society. The findings and discussions promote scholarly conversations about linguistic and social media factors influencing acculturative stressors, intergroup ideologies, and identity negotiation to promote IC competence, which could be a secondary coping strategy. In two studies (<em>N</em><sub>Study1</sub> = 354 and <em>N</em><sub>Study2</sub> = 490), we experimentally investigated the impact of priming with material referring to the war in Gaza on hostility toward Jews, and on antisemitism as well as other various ethnic groups (to determine whether this exposure specifically affected attitudes toward Jews or had a broader impact on ethnic attitudes in general). We also examined the indirect relationship between political orientation and anti-Jewish hostility and antisemitism, through sociopolitical factors such as global identification, out-group identity fusion, social dominance orientation, and misanthropy. Our results showed an experimental effect of increased negative attitudes toward Jews, as well as toward Britons and Scandinavians, but did not reveal an increase in antisemitism. This effect was not replicated in Study 2, possibly due to reduced media attention. The indirect effects suggested that political orientation (left vs. right-wing) was positively associated with anti-Jewish hostility and antisemitism through social dominance orientation. In contrast, conservative political orientation was negatively associated with antisemitism through out-group identity fusion with the Palestinian people. Through a series of semi-structured focus group interviews with 19 participants, this research examined how prior experience with Korean popular culture affects the expectations, preparedness, and adaptation processes of expatriates, drawing on cross-cultural adaptation and cultural fusion theory. Findings indicated that participants with prior Hallyu experience demonstrated a better understanding of social customs and basic language skills, contributing to their confidence and competence in daily tasks. However, despite the initial advantages, Hallyu exposure alone was insufficient to overcome long-term challenges such as discrimination, legal issues, and the feeling of being an outsider. This study investigated the mental health and wellbeing of university students in Australia, with a focus on identifying potential differences between domestic and international tertiary students. It was hypothesized that international students would experience greater mental health challenges compared to domestic students. Building on previous research predominantly centered on domestic students, a diverse sample of 838 university students (<em>M</em><sub>age</sub> = 23.0, <em>SD</em> = 5.4; 69 % female) was recruited. The results indicated a significant prevalence (44.1 % and 93.3 %, respectively) of moderate to severe levels of psychological distress and moderate to high levels of loneliness among the sampled population. It was found that mental health outcomes were comparatively more favorable for Chinese international students than both domestic students and international students from other countries. In this paper, we examine how prior intercultural exposure and personality factors shape the development of CQ during international student mobility. Two waves of data were collected from 549 engineering students over a nine-month period. Measures included the eleven subdimensions of expanded cultural intelligence (E-CQ), information on prior intercultural exposure (migration background, prior residence abroad, and number of countries visited), personality factors (openness and extraversion), and gender. Results from latent change score models revealed that nine of the eleven subdimensions of E-CQ increased significantly following international mobility. Students with lower initial E-CQ levels demonstrated greater growth compared to their peers with higher initial E-CQ levels. Openness and extraversion were positively associated with higher initial levels of metacognitive, cognitive, and motivational CQ but were related to smaller gains in motivational CQ (self-efficacy) and behavioral CQ (speech acts). Prior intercultural exposure was associated with higher initial E-CQ levels but was generally related to lower CQ growth, except for metacognitive CQ (planning). Our results show that international mobility significantly enhances CQ, with the most significant improvements observed among students with lower levels of openness, extraversion, or prior intercultural exposure.
