The CPX method is accurate, but accessibility is lower due to issues related to cost and complexity. For this reason, the Harvard Step Test and Queen's College Step Test are drawing interest. Step-based tests are influenced by factors such as leg length, requiring an investigation into the correlation between leg length and VO₂max estimation using these methods. This study investigates the influence of leg length on predicted VO₂max (pVO2max) determined through both the Harvard Step Test and the Queen's College Step Test. The assessment of VO2max was carried out using CPX on a treadmill. Measurements were obtained through the Harvard Step Test and Queen's College Step Test on steps. The participants were informed about the experimental procedure, and the experiment was conducted 24 hours later. The experiment maintained controlled conditions, and each measurement was conducted as a single trial, repeated three times for accuracy. The study found a significant positive correlation (r = 0.595, P < 0.05) between CPX VO2max and lower leg length. Lower leg length was found to significantly influence exercise intensity as determined by both the Harvard Step Test pVO2max (explaining 35.4% of the variance, P < 0.05) and the Queen's College Step Test pVO2max (explaining 30% of the variance, P < 0.05). It is recommended to adjust the step height to the individual's body size when estimating exercise difficulty or pVO2max using step-based exercises.","PeriodicalId":481436,"journal":{"name":"WSEAS transactions on biology and biomedicine","volume":"44 24","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141107341","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is found in the literature that most of the researchers considered the well-known methods with some modifications, however limited number of research articles proposed new algorithms. Apart from the algorithm, this study highlights the wide range of applications of interface problems specifically in biomedical, heat-transfer and turbo-machinery. Different numerical methods for interface problems with their major finding are listed in tabulated form at the end.","PeriodicalId":481436,"journal":{"name":"WSEAS transactions on biology and biomedicine","volume":"57 45","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141102427","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this article, a new strategic epidemiological model is proposed, denoted β-SIR. It is because the transmission rate β follows a proper dynamic law, more precisely a reaction-restore type transmission rate model. Some analytical results associated with dynamic consequences are presented for variables of epidemiological interest. It is concluded, observing the geometry of variables plots, such as transmission rate, effective reproductive number, daily new cases, and actives, that pandemic propagation is very sensible to the population behavior, e.g., by adherence to non-pharmaceutical mitigations and loss of compliance levels.","PeriodicalId":481436,"journal":{"name":"WSEAS transactions on biology and biomedicine","volume":" 27","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140221128","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the presence of missing data, before estimating the population mean using standard statistical methods, missing data has to be taken care of. In this study, we focus on new transformed regression type estimators when missing data are present in the study variable under the uniform nonresponse mechanism and assume that the population mean of the auxiliary variable is unavailable which usually occurs in practice. An auxiliary variable can assist by increasing the efficacy of estimating the population mean. The bias and mean square error are investigated up to the first order degree approximation using the Taylor series. A simulation and case studies on COVID-19 incidence in Chiang Mai, Thailand are used to assess the performance of the new transformed estimators. The estimated number of COVID-19 patients who have pneumonia and require high-flow oxygen and the estimated daily confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Chiang Mai from the best proposed estimator are around 17 cases and 118 cases, respectively.","PeriodicalId":481436,"journal":{"name":"WSEAS transactions on biology and biomedicine","volume":"64 1‐2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140223126","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The genetic material for MTHFR enzyme synthesis is situated on 1 chromosome p arm in the 1p36.3 position. A lot of single nucleotide mutations have been identified in this mentioned locus, but among them well-studied is the C677T gene mutation. The C677T/MTHFR polymorphisms impact MTHFR enzyme activity, leading to alterations in methionine and folate metabolism, homocysteine levels, and in most cases subsequent effects on DNA methylation. This literature review compiles information about the MTHFR C677T polymorphism and explores its potential association with various complex, multifactorial disorders, such as cancer, cardiovascular complications, neurological conditions, and diabetes mellitus, among others. The review synthesizes findings from diverse global populations, providing valuable insights for master's and doctorate students, as well as researchers specializing in this field.","PeriodicalId":481436,"journal":{"name":"WSEAS transactions on biology and biomedicine","volume":"7 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140243811","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A characteristic feature of clostridiosis pathogens is their polytropism. They affect both humans and agricultural, domestic, and wild animals. Our research aimed to monitor Clostridium perfringens and Clostridium difficile spread among agricultural organizations of the Ural region. Materials and Methods: 137 biological samples were obtained from cattle with symptoms of clostridial infection. For PCR species and toxinotype identification commercial kits and previously described protocols were used. Results verification was conducted using MALDI-TOF MS. Results: Out of 137 samples of selected material Clostridium was detected in 40.6% of samples: Cl. difficile in 35.8%, Cl. perfringens in 25.3%, Cl. difficile+Cl. perfringens in 16.4%. Cl. difficile and Cl. perfringens were found in 30.5% of fecal samples, in pathological material from dead calves and cows – 8.7%, in milk samples – 1.4%. Conclusion: Laboratory methods made it possible to verify the diagnosis: infectious anaerobic enterotoxemia of calves in one case, necrotic enteritis in 3 animals, and intestinal toxic infection caused by Cl. perfringens type A in 2 cows and 5 calves. The diagnostics of toxinotypes of Cl. perfringens have made it possible to conduct toxin-specific vaccination against clostridial infection in farms.","PeriodicalId":481436,"journal":{"name":"WSEAS transactions on biology and biomedicine","volume":"64 5","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135272389","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The immutable laws of chemical thermodynamics and kinetics enable the intermediates in the synthesis to be characterized and the activation energies to be established. The gases propyne, cyanogen, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen are invoked in a synthesis of the isoalloxazine precursor of the vitamin riboflavin (Vitamin B2), whilst the additional presence of hydrogen cyanide enables the surface-catalyzed, photochemically activated synthesis of a D-ribitylamine requiring the magnesium metalloporphyrin catalyst. These two molecules then bond in a Sn2 reaction to form the final vitamin structure. The reactions have been shown to be feasible from the overall enthalpy changes in the ZKE approximation at the HF and MP2 /6-31G* level and with acceptable activation energies.","PeriodicalId":481436,"journal":{"name":"WSEAS transactions on biology and biomedicine","volume":"212 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135325814","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recent focus has shifted towards harnessing Individual Dynamic Capabilities (IDC) to secure a competitive edge. This approach aims to cultivate novel organizational competencies that generate value, ultimately benefiting all stakeholders in the healthcare system during the adoption of emerging technologies. This study delves into the significance of IDC in the seamless integration of BT within hospital infrastructures. The aim is to evaluate whether IDC is instrumental in the triumphant execution of BT initiatives in these settings, propelling innovation, safeguarding data authenticity, and cultivating trust among the involved parties. A systematic literature review (SLR) served as the foundational methodology to address the research objectives. The SLR involved a comprehensive search of databases to identify relevant literature, followed by an in-depth evaluation of the articles that were found. Through this process, the researchers were able to identify and assess the value of IDC in BT initiatives, as well as identify any potential risks associated with its use. Additionally, insights were gleaned regarding the impact of IDC, extrapolated from theoretical frameworks, and contextualized within the realm of hospital BT management. The findings revealed existing synergies between certain IDC and BT solutions, conferring both strategic and operational superiority by aligning BT with intricate demands. The research further underscored the transformative potential of BT across various healthcare facets, ranging from patient documentation to financial transactions. This research can pave the way for subsequent investigations into the interplay between IDC and BT.","PeriodicalId":481436,"journal":{"name":"WSEAS transactions on biology and biomedicine","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135779275","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
