Using data from the 2015 Korean Ministry of Justice report, the study examines sex offenders under electronic monitoring from 2012 to 2014. The results show that crimes involving child victims occurred closer to offenders' residences than those involving adult victims, partially supporting the rationale behind residency restrictions. However, the proximity of crimes against unfamiliar victims raises questions about the overall effectiveness of these policies Regression analysis showed that prior offenses and IQ predicted crime distance, but alcohol use and psychopathy did not. The study concludes that residency restrictions offer limited protection and recommends a comprehensive approach, including monitoring and support programs, to reduce recidivism and improve community safety. Policymakers should consider additional measures beyond physical distance constraints to mitigate risks posed by sex offenders.
","PeriodicalId":48041,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Offender Therapy and Comparative Criminology","volume":" ","pages":"1524-1543"},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2025-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143531949","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study included 253 Jewish women (M = 29.21, SD = 6.90), primarily Israeli-born. Regression analysis showed that conservative gender roles and negative sexual self-perceptions predicted higher RMA. Ultra-Orthodox women exhibited more conservative gender attitudes, higher RMA, and more negative sexual self-concepts than secular and formerly Ultra-Orthodox women. However, no differences emerged between formerly Ultra-Orthodox and secular women. Additionally, all groups showed similar levels of positive sexual self-concepts. These findings highlight the influence of religious upbringing on attitudes toward gender and sexuality and the complex interplay between religious heritage and societal exposure. Principles of a participatory action paradigm guided development and implementation of the pilot project. Grounded Theory and narrative research principles guided data collection and analysis in the 3-year study. A convenience sample of 27 participants was obtained by the organization's staff recruiting each of the individuals on behalf of the researchers as they entered the pilot program during the 3 years of pilot activity. Qualitative data collection was carried out during the 3 years of program implementation. A semi-structured open-ended interview script was utilized by the research team as a guide to ensure focus on the experience of participants. Current extreme challenges included living with a criminal background and carrying the weight of a troubled past. Great strength was evidenced in their navigation of their worlds. Essential resources for successful navigation were identified including the use of prayer, religion and spirituality, persistent hopefulness, recognition of personal change, and the use of supportive relationships. Getting stable housing and employment, while important, was not seen as enough in itself to ensure successful reentry. Therefore, relationships that recognize strengths and help navigating inevitable disappointments and challenges must also be incorporated into the available housing, educational, mental health, employment programs, and other services. The findings of this study suggest that practice approaches, services, and policies that are intended to help people with criminal backgrounds must incorporate and emphasize the lived experiences of returning citizens as they navigate the challenging tasks of living in a carceral state.
","PeriodicalId":48041,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Offender Therapy and Comparative Criminology","volume":" ","pages":"1351-1369"},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2025-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"9638416","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using the Sexual Homicide International Database (SHIelD), we explore lifestyle risk by comparing sexual homicide cases involving hitchhiking victims to those involving victims engaged in sex trade work. The results, based on the use of bivariate and multivariate statistics, indicate that offenders view hitchhiking victims as opportunities for confinement without physical restraint, often engaging in sexual acts and theft. While not primarily sadistic or sexually deviant, many offenders partake in criminal activities, exhibit psychological disorders, and possess weapons. Hitchhiking facilitates perpetrator-victim encounters due to its environmental characteristics. Victims in the sex trade, typically found in isolated locations, are at the mercy of offenders who drive them to unknown destinations. In contrast, murderers targeting low-risk victims display more sexual preoccupations, inserting foreign objects and engaging in postmortem activities. Participants responded to five attachment-related, stress-inducing story-stems. Thematic analysis under a constructivist framework identified five themes: Parental Profiles, Desire for Protection and Care, Self-Blame and Longing for Childhood, Feeling of Being Unloved, and Redemption of Remorse Based on Observed Parenting. Narratives reflected a lack of secure-base support and sensitive caregiving in childhood, marked by emotional neglect, disengaged fathers, and in some cases, abuse. The severity and aftermath of these events prompted investigations into their underlying causes. In the current study, in-depth interviews were conducted with 24 PAIC individuals. Content analysis revealed several factors contributing to the perception of the causes of the May 2021 riots. A combination of living under pressure in Israel, identity and solidarity with Palestinians, on-going racism and discrimination, and fear of an existential threat- Nakba - heightened the perception of an amplified threat, which led to a significant response. The primary immediate factor was the perceived existential threat felt by PAIC, including the fear of forced eviction from their homes and lands. This perceived existential threat, compounded by the dread of a catastrophic event similar to the 1948 Nakba, played a significant role in fueling the intense riots. Additionally, underlying issues such as the ongoing conflict between Palestinians and Jews, perceived discrimination, and racism against PAIC were identified.
","PeriodicalId":48041,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Offender Therapy and Comparative Criminology","volume":" ","pages":"306624X251352125"},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2025-07-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144601908","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While empathy is not a major risk factor for sexual offending, it is linked to other risk factors like offense-supportive attitudes and hostility. Research often fails to differentiate between cognitive (understanding emotions) and affective (emotional resonance) empathy, hindering identification of specific empathy impairments in offenders. This study examines cognitive and affective empathy in Dutch males with sexual offenses (N = 33), violent offenses (N = 30), and the general population (N = 91). Using the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) and considering impulsivity as a covariate, the study found that sexual offenders had higher levels of both cognitive and affective empathy compared to violent offenders. In particular, the study emphasises structural constraints in the colonial setting of Aotearoa New Zealand, which can prevent Indigenous Māori men from obtaining stable, rewarding work. The study emphasises how different types of work and work environments can have varying effects on desistance, with some even encouraging reoffending and needing to be 'knifed off' to support the men's desistance journeys. It is argued that those leaving prison should not be encouraged into 'any' job, but rather work which provides adequate remuneration, satisfaction, and opportunities to build a positive identity to foster desistance. Using data from 874 patients with diverse psychiatric disorders, clinical risk factors were assessed at admission and discharge. Slight but significant improvements were observed in most risk factors, particularly psychotic symptoms, over an average stay of approximately 6 months. Patients with psychotic or substance use disorders showed the most improvement, while those with mood, personality, or developmental disorders showed minimal change. The study highlights the positive impact of PPCs' structured, secure environment and specialized treatment, especially for psychotic disorders. It also underscores the complexity of treating patients with high rates of comorbidity. The findings suggest that the duration of stay does not significantly predict the improvement in most clinical risk factors. Future research should explore specific diagnostic clusters and their impact on treatment outcomes in PPCs.
","PeriodicalId":48041,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Offender Therapy and Comparative Criminology","volume":" ","pages":"1333-1347"},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2025-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC12138146/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142394296","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
