In addition, we consider here the role of the individual's starting position, and in particular their upward social mobility relative to their parents. In 18 waves of UK panel data, both own and parental social status are independently negatively associated with Left-leaning voting and political preferences; given their own social status, the upwardly mobile are therefore more Left-wing. The analysis shows that an economy remains stagnant, exhibiting neither networking nor long-term growth, when the size of the creative class falls below a positive threshold. Once this threshold is exceeded, active networking between creative and non-creative individuals emerges, fostering sustained technological progress and income growth. The model is calibrated and used to simulate the transition from stagnation to sustained growth. Spatial disparities in productivity are large and persistent. Using a development accounting framework, we show that differences in area size and in the spatial distribution of human and business capital are key explanatory factors. A combination of area size and human capital explains 30% of the productivity variance, increasing to 43–57% once we add measures of business capital stocks. We recruited 760 local politicians and 655 non-politicians in France to participate as policymakers in a taxation-redistribution game. In the game, two policymakers compete to choose a flat tax rate for a group of citizens selected from the French general population. We manipulate (i) the information provided to policymakers about citizens' preferred tax rates, and (ii) the incentives associated with applying citizens' preferred tax rate. We also measure policymakers' beliefs regarding citizens' preferences. We observe that policymakers react positively to information, but they often deviate from it, which can be mostly explained by their beliefs. Incentivizing responsiveness has no impact on these results. This suggests that politicians trade off their own preferences about the policy outcome with an intrinsic motivation to implement citizens' preferences. Finally, we find that politicians believe that citizens want lower tax rates and are more confident in their beliefs than non-politicians. Once beliefs are accounted for, we observe minor differences between the two samples. We analyse the effectiveness of a behavioural intervention delivered through email, featuring one of two types of social-comparison-based energy consumption feedback: a quintile social comparison message and a mean comparison message. The quintile social comparison message ranks residents' relative energy consumption in quintiles, while the mean comparison message compares their consumption to the average. Our results show that the relative effectiveness of these messages depends on residents' baseline consumption patterns. Users in the higher quintiles (fourth and fifth) are more likely to reduce their energy consumption, while those in the lower quintiles (first and second) tend to increase their electricity usage after receiving the messages. We also observe that this adjustment towards the median consumption level appears to be more pronounced in single- and double-student rooms compared to multiple-student rooms. However, little is known about how the mental health of local residents is affected when an incident of violent crime occurs in their vicinity. To address this question, we pair granular crime data with uniquely detailed panel data on individual stress levels, both from one of England's largest police force areas during the years 2010–2017. We find that local violent crime leads to an immediate and significant increase in residents' stress levels. We observe that this effect is strongest when the respondent is at home, and lasts approximately one week. Effects are predominantly driven by female respondents and those who live in urban areas. We present difference-in-differences, triple differences, event studies and synthetic control estimates suggesting that the programme may have supported employment and workforce participation following its enactment. For example, from difference-in-differences estimates, we find that the employment–population ratio rose by 3.6 percentage points, the unemployment rate fell by 0.7 percentage points, and the non-participation rate fell by 2.9 percentage points in Idaho relative to other states following the introduction of the RWB programme. If these results from Idaho were to generalize to the economy as a whole, then they would not be enough to arrest a moderate recession, but they would meaningfully accelerate labour market recovery. To explore this question, we analyse data on all casualty-causing terrorist incidents in Great Britain from 1992 to 2020, and combine this information with individual-level data from the British Household Panel Survey and the UK Household Longitudinal Study over the same period. To get as close as possible to a causal interpretation, we exploit variation within individuals, net of potential attack-specific and aggregate temporal factors, and report an array of different specifications and robustness tests. Our analysis reveals that geographic proximity to terrorist attacks decreases life satisfaction, particularly when the incidents occurred within the month before the interview. We examine the extent to which income, cognitive ability, and the personality traits conscientiousness and extraversion predict these choices. Specifically, we analyse how these factors moderate horse race betting behaviour around a monthly payday and the annual tax refund day in Finland. Our daily data comprised all online horse bets placed by individual bettors in Finland over one year, combined with IQ and personality test scores from conscription data, and with administrative data on socioeconomic and demographic variables. Both paydays and tax refund day induced increases in betting on both the extensive and intensive margins. Effects were stronger for individuals with lower income, lower IQ, and a lower degree of conscientiousness, with mixed results on the role of extraversion. We construct an exogenous measure of firm-level demand shocks based on changes in destination–product imports, and analyse responses at both the intensive and extensive margins of trade. Despite similar levels of openness and export structure, exporters in the two countries exhibit distinct adjustment patterns. Swedish firms respond strongly to positive demand shocks by expanding exports while simultaneously narrowing their export portfolio, reallocating sales towards core markets and products. Finnish firms, in contrast, show limited export expansion and adjust less along the product margin, instead reallocating sales towards domestic markets during downturns. We find limited evidence that firms' financial strength explains these differences.
