This study drew on a revised objectification theory to predict attitudes and behaviors pertaining to DM that arise from using social networking sites (SNSs). A sample of 303 undergraduate men, aged 17–25 years, completed online questionnaire measures of engagement in three SNS activities (browsing or following celebrity, fashion, and grooming sites, browsing or following fitspiration sites, and placing importance on online “likes” and comments). Also assessed were body surveillance, social appearance anxiety, and two indices of DM (attitudes and behavior). Structural equation modeling was used to test\u0000an objectification theory-based model of the antecedents of DM. Results supported a serial mediation process comprising paths from two of the SNS activities (browsing or following celebrity, fashion, and grooming sites and placing importance on online “likes” and comments) through, in turn, body surveillance and social appearance anxiety, to DM attitudes but not to DM behaviors. Viewing fitspiration sites predicted DM behaviors and attitudes directly, rather than indirectly. Findings extend objectification theory as a useful framework for identifying the influence of some SNS uses on young men’s DM and suggest strategies through which the negative effects of SNS use on excessive DM may be curtailed.","PeriodicalId":47981,"journal":{"name":"Psychology of Men & Masculinities","volume":"90 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.7,"publicationDate":"2020-04-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89879836","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present study reports the development and evaluation of a measure of the masculinity ideologies relevant to the lives of aging men, using a sample (N = 1184) of adult men and women (ages 3195), the Aging Men’s Masculinity Ideologies Inventory (AMMII). An exploratory factor analysis on a randomly selected part of the data revealed a 15-item 5-factor scale, which was supported with confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) using the balance of the data. An analysis of variance composition through a series of CFA’s found that the common (correlated) factors model fit the data best, which suggests that the subscale scores of distinct masculinity ideologies can be used in research, but it would not be advisable to calculate a total scale score to represent a general later-life masculinity ideology. The AMMII demonstrated configural and metric invariance between men and women for the five later life masculinity standards, which indicates that mature and aging women and men share similar beliefs about what is expected of men’s later life gender practices. Finding convergent construct evidence for the validity four of the AMMII factors encourages use of this short multidimensional scale. The results are discussed in terms of limitations and implications for research and practice.","PeriodicalId":47981,"journal":{"name":"Psychology of Men & Masculinities","volume":"93 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.7,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90273378","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
