The chapter details the range of practical and administrative issues that have been identified by research participants living on compulsory income management in Australia and New Zealand. The chapter also considers the perspectives of community stakeholders. What the empirical analysis highlights is that the majority of the people targeted by the policy do not see themselves as having a problem with alcohol or gambling, or in managing money. What they lack are the financial resources to meet their needs. Boys who have experienced DVA have occupied a space of tension within feminist organizing around DVA. In the early days of the second-wave feminist movement boys were seen as peripheral to the woman-focused nature of the movement and its related interventions. The author highlights there is still much work to be done to open up the conversation about men’s childhood experiences of DVA. This chapter also focuses on the issues for boys identified as gang involved. Gang labelling has been reductionist, racialized, and classed. Stringer","doi":"10.1332/policypress/9781529216646.003.0002","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1332/policypress/9781529216646.003.0002","url":null,"abstract":"Highlights of diversity policy and implementation in the UK are discussed from the perspective of a senior academic who has been leading such programmes for more than twenty years. focusing first on the early 2000s, on the Equality Act, the Black and Minority Ethnic attainment gap, the development of the Stonewall Workplace Equality programme and the early years of Athena SWAN. These discussions are interspersed with reflections on the author’s own work and initiatives at Birmingham University to bring equality and diversity onto the agenda, the key lessons learnt and some of the principal barriers. The main finding is his observation that the drive towards equality and diversity point began from a very low base, involved the whole University, and maintained a key emphasis on the fully range of equality characteristics. Not everything worked, but the change in culture was significant and lasting. It also contrasts welfare responses from across several jurisdictions. With respect to the data, the chapter shows that after an initial period where strong welfare responses were largely welcomed, both publicly and politically, many of the themes seen in earlier chapters of this book remain present and are repeated. However, it also shows that at times of great social and economic crisis, people generally welcome and even expect a strong welfare response. Though urban forms and places are hugely varied, they have often been depicted as poorly attuned to the needs and capabilities of inhabitants. Such criticism can be detected, for example, in literature linking urban form to health outcomes, such as the extensive research exploring the relationship between urban sprawl and socio-medical conditions such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease (see, for example, Frumkin, 2002). It can be found in studies of the atmospheric qualities of urban form such as noise from streets, poor air quality and light pollution that have been connected to issues of physical health but also identified as stressors affecting mental health and wellbeing (see, for example, Tuan, 1974; Park and Evans, 2016). It can be found in the growing literature connecting urban design with the availability of such vital resources as water, including research on the impacts of public space design on the depletion or replenishment of the groundwater aquifers that healthy and resilient ecosystems depend on (for example, Lerner, 1990; Pickett et al, 2013). It can also be seen in critical assessments of the generic nature of much urban form and building leading to a sense of placelessness and social exclusions of diverse kinds. The overriding objective of returning these to a near-natural state was to lock carbon in the ground rather than letting it leach into the atmosphere. These peatlands, then, store enormous wealth: carbon, paving the way to a new economy: carbon trading, perhaps involving large companies buying credits from restored peatlands — big retailers and transport concerns, for instance. Underlying this is the notion that there is a single, objectively verifiable truth. Chapter 1 starts by situating the trial in historical context and reviews earlier means of ascertaining liability. Many of the processes described appear absurd (and often barbaric) to contemporary eyes, but, historically, there was an acceptance that the methods had probative value. There was also a belief in absolute truth, which these techniques would expose. However, the Chapter reveals truth to be conceptually complex and contested. Attention will also be given to lying, showing that falsity does not necessitate bad faith.
