The subject examined is true federalism as it affects national unity and development. In order to achieve our aim, the following areas were explored in the literature review: the concept of federalism, the evolution of federalism, division of powers in federal states, revenue allocation and resource control in federal states. Relevant variables such as, democracy, independent judiciary and a powerful legislature were also examined as prerequisites for the existence of true federalism in a political system. Four research objectives and questions guided the study. The theoretical frame work for the study was hinged on K.C. Wheare’s Theory of Federalism. The work is purely qualitative, (doctrinal method of research) as only secondary data were used for the entire study. The research findings revealed that, the American federal system of government is more ideal and that Nigeria can borrow a lift from the USA if it desires to experience true federalism, which guarantees national unity and development.","PeriodicalId":476004,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Global Social Sciences","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135987976","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Olannye","doi":"10.58934/jgss.v4i15.192","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.58934/jgss.v4i15.192","url":null,"abstract":"This study focused on corporate governance and financial performance of parastatals in Nigeria. Five (5) banks were selected which are First Bank Plc, United Bank of Africa Plc, Guarantee Trust Bank Plc, Zenith Bank Plc and Fidelity Bank Plc. The data obtained to test and validate the hypotheses were from secondary sources concerning the variables of interest. However, the data generated are as follows; 2015 – 2022 (8 years) financial statements of five sampled banks which provided information about the variables tested and discussed. The data analysis revealed that measures of financial performance (ROA, BOD & BS), recorded means and standard deviations of 0.021966, 13.8, 13.8 and 0.0136177, 2.988868, 2.988868 respectively. The low standard deviation recorded by each of the measures of financial performance suggests that the return on asset of the respective sampled banks, members of their board of directors and board size have proximity with their respective average values. The respective minimum values recorded for ROA, BOD and BS are 0.0025847, 2 and 2; whereas the maximum values were 0.0561668, 19 and 19 respectively. This implies that the minimum of all the measures is not below 0.0561668 and the maximum did not exceed 19. It is concluded that Board composition which entails Board of Directors and Board Size has no significant effect of the financial performance of firms. The study recommended that efforts to improve corporate governance should focus on the value of the stock ownership of board members, since it is positively related to both future operating performance and to the probability of disciplinary management turnover in poorly performing banks.","PeriodicalId":476004,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Global Social Sciences","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135990186","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The population of the study consists of customers and employee of Zenith Bank, Fidelity Bank, United Bank of Africa, Access Bank and First Bank in Delta State. The basis for selection of these five (5) banks from the twenty-four (24) DBMs in Nigeria is because they are key players in the industry. Therefore, the total population is 1740 which consists of the customers and the employees. The stratified random technique was utilized with the probability sampling method. The study concluded that performance appraisal affects organizational performance. Effective employee participation in performance appraisal is to understand the strategy the organization is trying to implement, timely communication of performance targets, timely feedback on progress towards set goals and employee full participation in setting goals. The study recommends that management should improve in justice perception; this is due to improve the commitment of non-executive employees towards the organization. Improving the justice perception can be made by improving the delivery of the information in terms of clarity, understanding and timely relevant.","PeriodicalId":476004,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Global Social Sciences","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135990187","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study adopted the marginality and mattering theory (MMT) proposed by Schlossberg (1989), as theoretical underpinning for understanding community relation strategies and sustainable development particularly marginalized SPDC host communities in Bayelsa state, and applied descriptive survey research design to generate data. It was reinforced by secondary sources. The study finds that SPDC has not imparted positively to the sustainable development of the host communities in Bayelsa state compared to the negative consequences rising from the exploitation and exploration of oil and gas activities in their host communities, which include: environmental pollution, oil spillage, unemployment, destruction of farmland and other forms of degradation. It also reveals that even the little efforts put towards host community’s development projects such as Scholarships, health centre construction/maintenance, school renovations, link road construction, market construction, portable water and electricity supplies, etc, have not been sustained after at least six months of commissioning. Despite this, SPDC's relationship with her host communities has been tense. Thus recommend that government and SPDC should implement capacity-building programmes, assure full community engagement in need identification, and devise measures to foster peace and harmony within SPDC's host communities’ operation to takes place.","PeriodicalId":476004,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Global Social Sciences","volume":"103 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135992461","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is particularly so in the light of lax legislation regulating the Nigeria oil industry. This paper advanced the argument that all human acts such as oil spills, gas flaring and other forms of environmental degradation in contravention of existing environmental legislation amount to environmental violence; and constitute environmental crime; which crime is increasing unabated in the Nigeria Delta region of Nigeria, with huge human security implications. The environment isthe life and sustainer of humanity, unfortunately man has become a destroyer instead of a protector and replenisher of the environment on account of the unsustainable drive for capital accumulation for industrialization and development. The outcomes of the activities associated with industrialization and development instead of ameliorating has rather deepened the poverty and misery of the Niger Delta. The acts of ecocide and genocide committed by the Multinational Oil Corporations with the tacit connivance Nigerian state had continuously threatened human security, without commensurable commitments to halting the impending Armageddon. The argument of this paper is guided by resource curse theory. Data were purely qualitative, and generated from secondary sources and subjected to content analysis. The fundamental finding of this paper is that the trouble with environmental governance in Nigeria is not the want of regulations, albeit weak but the weak extractive and regulatory capacity of the Nigeria state to enforce compliance. The paper recommends very strongly that the Nigerian state must assert its stateness, effectively perform its regulatory roles, and criminalize all acts of environment violations.","PeriodicalId":476004,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Global Social Sciences","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135300257","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Worrisome is the Islamic sect spread of its tentacles to other states in the North-East, North-West and North-Centre. To contain the sect, the Federal Government deployed more troops, declared a state of emergency in the hotbed of Boko-Haram to check the spate of the menace, yet the sect is holding upper had in the war. A situation that has tempted the federal government to concede granting the sect Amnesty. This study examines the implications of granting Amnesty to Boko Haram Insurgents in Northern Nigeria, it traces the activities and operations which has led to the continued massive loss of human and material resources, despite the death of their founder and detention of their top hit men. Their dastard activities have dented the image of the country, impacted negatively on the overall economic development of the country. This paper’s position is that granting amnesty to Boko Haram will portray Nigeria as a weak state and more dangerously as an encouraging signal to other disgruntled elements in the society to take up arms against the state. The paper recommend that, there should be effective information and analysis about the sect members and their operations, updating of security personnel and equipment, strengthen the anti-terrorist laws, etc. these will guarantee peace in Nigeria and defeat the sect.","PeriodicalId":476004,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Global Social Sciences","volume":"284 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135250251","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
