A more representative mechanical analysis of such materials must take into account the dynamic masticatory load of the oral cavity. The aim of this work is to study the dynamic mechanical proprieties and provide an in vitro characterization of 11 3D-printed new dental biomaterials to understand their clinical applications under physiological conditions. The analysis included Dynamical Mechanical Analysis (DMA) and an MTT cytotoxicity assay. The mechanical results at low frequencies (1–11 Hz) show high uncertainty, less fragility, and less strength. The biological results show a significant reduction in cell viability (p < 0.01) at both the 3 and 24 h timepoints, with a degree of recovery observed at 24 h. To assess the clinical potential of dental biomaterials, it is necessary to determine whether there are good dynamic mechanical properties and reduced adverse biological effects on oral cells. This may allow for the facile fabrication via 3D printing of prosthetic devices that can support masticatory loads over long periods of time. Further investigations of the presented polymeric materials are needed, exploring biological assessments for longer than 24 h.","PeriodicalId":474580,"journal":{"name":"Prosthesis","volume":"10 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140240347","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, this study aimed to assess the effectiveness of mandibular overdentures retained using mini-implants on patient-reported satisfaction and their long-term survival. Methods: We searched patients’ medical records for eligible subjects, screening and inviting patients who received a mandibular overdenture anchored on mini-implants over ten years ago. We used a numerical rating scale from 0 (the worst) to 10 (the best) to assess four aspects: comfort, retention, chewing ability, and speaking ability before and after having mini-implants. We carried out Kaplan–Meier analysis to assess their survival. Results: Forty-eight elderly patients who were medically compromised and had a mandibular overdenture anchored on four permucosal mini-implants were included. All patient-reported satisfaction (comfort, retention, chewing ability, and speaking ability) was significantly improved after supporting mandibular overdentures with mini-implants (p-values < 0.05), with retention and chewing ability being the most substantially improved. The 10- and 15-year mini-implant survival rates were both 97.9%. Conclusions: Mandibular overdentures with mini-implants can be considered a valid and practical alternative to conventional implant-supported overdentures in patients with atrophic ridges, medically compromised, and the elderly.","PeriodicalId":474580,"journal":{"name":"Prosthesis","volume":"198 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140249997","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: Three subjects completed gait trials in which they were induced to stumble via three different means. Several iterations of ML algorithms were developed to ultimately classify whether individual steps were stumbles or normal gait using leave-one-out methodology. Data cleaning and hyperparameter tuning were applied. Results: One hundred thirty individual stumbles were marked and collected during the trials. Single-layer networks including Long-Short Term Memory (LSTM), Simple Recurrent Neural Network (SimpleRNN), and Gradient Recurrent Unit (GRU) were evaluated at 76% accuracy (LSTM and GRU). A four-layer LSTM achieved an 88.7% classic accuracy, with 66.9% step-specific accuracy. Conclusion: This initial trial demonstrated the ML capabilities of the gathered dataset. Though further data collection and exploration would likely improve results, the initial findings demonstrate that three forms of induced stumble can be learned with some accuracy. Significance: Other datasets and studies, such as that of Chereshnev et al. with HuGaDB, demonstrate the cataloging of human gait activities and classifying them for activity prediction. This study suggests that the integration of stumble data with such datasets would allow a knee prosthesis to detect stumbles and adapt to gait activities with some accuracy without depending on state-based recognition.","PeriodicalId":474580,"journal":{"name":"Prosthesis","volume":"83 10","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140080147","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Three Class T63 and nine Class T64 female long jumpers were examined during a competition. The temporal and kinematic parameters of their approach steps (step length: SL; step frequency: SF; average step velocity: SV) were measured using a panning video method and speed radar. The symmetry angle was the measure of inter-limb asymmetry. The results revealed that SF and SV were significantly (p < 0.05) larger in the intact lower limb. Significant (p < 0.05) asymmetry was revealed for SL, SF, and SV in 2/12, 3/12, and 1/12 jumpers, respectively. The direction of asymmetry for SF was towards the leg wearing the prosthesis for all examined jumpers. The official jump distance was significantly (p < 0.05) positively correlated with the maximum velocity attained during the approach and negatively correlated with the symmetry angle for SF. It is concluded that the observed asymmetry in SF was compensated for by the modifications observed in the SL that consequently resulted in no asymmetry in SV, leading the participants to effectively utilize their approach speed optimally in terms of long jump performance.","PeriodicalId":474580,"journal":{"name":"Prosthesis","volume":"17 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139687500","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This innovative technology allows for the creation of bespoke prosthetic devices that are tailored to meet the specific needs of individual patients. These devices are constructed using high-performance materials, including titanium and cobalt-chrome alloys. Nevertheless, the routine physical activities of patients, such as walking, sitting, and running, can induce wear and tear on the materials comprising these prosthetic devices, subsequently diminishing their functionality and durability. In response to this challenge, this research has endeavored to leverage novel techniques. The primary focus of this study lies in the development of an algorithm designed to optimize hip replacement procedures via the mechanical design of the prosthesis. This optimization process exploits the capabilities of machine learning algorithms, multi-body dynamics, and finite element method (FEM) simulations. The paramount innovation in this methodology is the capacity to design a prosthetic system that intricately adapts to the distinctive characteristics of each patient (weight, height, gait cycle). The primary objective of this research is to enhance the performance and longevity of prosthetic devices by improving their fatigue strength. The evaluation of load distribution on the prosthetic device, facilitated by FEM simulations, anticipates a substantial augmentation in the useful life of the prosthetic system. This research holds promise as a notable advancement in prosthetic technology, offering a more efficacious treatment option for patients suffering from joint arthritis. The aim of this research is to make meaningful contributions to the enhancement of patient quality of life and the long-term performance of prosthetic devices.","PeriodicalId":474580,"journal":{"name":"Prosthesis","volume":"42 9","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138954726","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Integration of sensory feedback with the functional control re-enables sensory interaction with the environment through the prosthetic. Besides the functional and sensory loss, amputation induces anatomical and physiological changes of the sensory neural pathways, both peripherally and centrally, which can lead to phantom limb pain (PLP). Additionally, referred sensation areas (RSAs) likely originating from peripheral nerve sprouting, regeneration, and sensory reinnervation may develop. RSAs might provide a non-invasive access point to sensory neural pathways that project to the lost limb. This paper aims to report on the sensory input features, elicited using non-invasive electrical stimulation of RSAs that over time alleviated PLP in two upper-limb amputees. The distinct features of RSAs and sensation evoked using mechanical and electrical stimuli were characterized for the two participants over a period of 7 and 9 weeks, respectively. Both participants received transradial and transhumeral amputation following traumatic injuries. In one participant, a relatively low but stable number of RSAs provided a large variety of types of evoked phantom hand (PH) sensations. These included non-painful touch, vibration, tingling, stabbing, pressure, warmth/cold as well as the perception of various positions and movements of the phantom hand upon stimulation. Discomforting and painful sensations were induced with both mechanical and electrical stimuli. The other participant had a relatively large number of RSAs which varied over time. Stimulation of the RSAs provided mostly non-painful sensations of touch in the phantom hand. Temporary PLP alleviation and a change in the perception of the phantom hand from a tight to a more open fist were reported by both participants. The specificity of RSAs, dynamics in perception of the sensory input, and the associated alleviation of PLP could be effectively exploited by designs of future active prostheses. As such, techniques for the modulation of the sensory input associated with paradigms from interaction with the environment may add another dimension of protheses towards integrating personalized therapy for PLP.","PeriodicalId":474580,"journal":{"name":"Prosthesis","volume":" 19","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138962412","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This technique extends the tooth preparation below the gingival margin on the root surface of teeth with reduced periodontal attachment. The tooth prepared according to this technique does not present a defined prosthetic margin or the relative finishing line. Still, it shows an edgeless axial wall that emerges from the gingival sulcus. The digital procedure for creating a prosthetic emergence profile, although representing a novelty in absolute terms, is based on traditional concepts, as they have been known and described in the literature for a long time. This article will explain and review the various clinical and laboratory steps necessary to produce, through an entirely digital procedure, a fixed partial denture composed of three zirconia elements, which are going to be subsequently veneered in a traditional way on the vestibular side to improve the esthetic appearance.","PeriodicalId":474580,"journal":{"name":"Prosthesis","volume":" 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138994606","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Current 3D scanners are expensive (>GBP 5000) and difficult to use, restricting their use by prosthetists. In this paper, we explore the use and accuracy of smartphone photogrammetry (<GBP 1000) as an accessible means of digitising rectified socket moulds. A reversed digital twin method was used for evaluating accuracy, in addition to simplified genetic algorithms to identify an optimal technique. The identified method achieved an accuracy of 99.65% and 99.13% for surface area and volume, respectively, with an interclass coefficient of 0.81. The method presented is simple, requiring less than ten minutes to capture using twenty-six photos. However, image processing time can take hours, depending on the software used. This method falls within clinical limits for accuracy, requires minimal training, and is non-destructive; thus, it can be integrated into existing workflows. This technique could bridge the gap between digital and physical workflows, helping to revolutionise the prosthetics fitting process and supporting the inclusion of additive manufactured sockets.","PeriodicalId":474580,"journal":{"name":"Prosthesis","volume":" 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138994626","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
