Participants were recruited from a nonprobability internet panel from two sources: a large cross-section of adults matched and weighted to US Census norms and a specific oversample of sports-gambling adults (Baseline N = 1,760). Analyzing five waves of data collected over two years, we found robust between-person associations: Higher gambling frequency corresponded with stronger affect regulation motives. Contrary to expectations, both coping and enhancement motives were strongly related to gambling frequency in sports gamblers, suggesting that this group may be more broadly motivated to gamble for affect regulation. {"title":"Prognostic Impact of Atrial Fibrillation Pattern and other Clinical Biomarkers in Patients with Stroke Admitted in a Tertiary Hospital in Cebu City from 2015-2022.","authors":"Sofia Maria S Im, Ma Teresa A Cañete","doi":"10.47895/amp.vi0.6751","DOIUrl":"10.47895/amp.vi0.6751","url":null,"abstract":"<p><strong>Background: </strong>The effect of atrial fibrillation (AF) patterns and clinical biomarkers among patients with AF-related stroke is still controversial.</p><p><strong>Objectives: </strong>The objective of this study is to determine the association of the pattern of AF and markers on routine blood tests with the outcome of patients after an AF-related stroke.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>This is a retrospective cohort study of patients with stroke and AF admitted in a tertiary hospital in Cebu City from 2015-2022. Patients' baseline characteristics, laboratory tests, ECG, and radiologic data were collected. Descriptive statistics such as mean and frequency were computed. The Kaplan-Meier method and the log-rank test were used to calculate the incidence time. The Cox regression analysis was used to determine factors associated with survival. A stepwise regression technique was used in model building.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>The mortality rate of patients with AF-related stroke was 0.02. A Kaplan Meier survival estimate shows that patients with paroxysmal AF have better survival. Upon model building of variables, age, red cell distribution width (RDW), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet count, low density lipid cholesterol (LDL-C), and pattern of AF were predictive of mortality in patients with AF-related stroke.</p><p><strong>Conclusions: </strong>Among AF-related stroke patients admitted at a tertiary hospital in Cebu City, pattern of AF, age, RDW, NLR, platelet count, and LDL-C were associated with mortality. The parameters associated with increased mortality could be easily assessed using an ECG, CBC, and lipid profile. {"title":"Prevalence and correlates of gambling disorder in Spain: findings from a national survey","authors":"Roberto Secades-Villa, Andrea Krotter, Gema Aonso-Diego","doi":"10.1080/14459795.2023.2276747","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1080/14459795.2023.2276747","url":null,"abstract":"ABSTRACTThe aim of the study was to estimate the prevalence of gambling disorder (GD) in a sample of Spanish adults and analyze the sociodemographic variables, addictive behaviors (i.e. gambling-related characteristics, substance use, and problematic internet use), and lifetime clinical diagnoses related to the severity of GD. Participants from the 2020 Spanish Survey on Alcohol and Drugs (N = 17,105; 50.52% men; Mage = 38.38 ± 13.07) were included. Individuals were classified as gamblers with GD when scored ≥4 points in the DSM-5 criteria. ANOVA and Pearson correlations were carried out to analyze differences in GD scores according to the variables noted above. The results showed that the rate of GD was 0.63% in the total sample and 1.05% in past-year gamblers. Characteristics which showed significantly higher GD scores were as follows: being a man, younger age, unmarried, greater gambling involvement both online and offline, gambling both online and offline, betting on both strategic and non-strategic games or on exclusively strategic games, lower gambling risk perception, greater substance use, higher problematic alcohol, cannabis, or internet use, or a lifetime diagnosis of anxiety, insomnia, or substance use disorder (all p-values ≤.001).
