It investigates what I have dubbed \"ironic axioms,\" or IAS, as a new kind of verbal irony used by the author to create a hilarious ironic text. This technique is based on taḥṣīl al-ḥāṣil , which entails stating the obvious, explaining simple facts, using circular definitions, and defining a thing by itself. Ibn Sūdūn’s strategy for developing ironic humor is predicated on preparing his audience for something serious, weird, and significant before stunning them with trifling facts and well-known adages. A hybrid method based on the combination of Attardo's (2000) theory of Irony as relevant inappropriateness and Giora's (1995, 1997, 1998)","PeriodicalId":472059,"journal":{"name":"CDELT Occasional Papers \"In the Development of English Language Education\" (Print)","volume":"158 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135857826","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present paper highlights the issues that Arab subtitlers encounter while translating metaphorical expressions into English. In particular, it investigates the different types of metaphors as introduced by Peter Newmark (1988). It puts forward the strategies necessary for handling the difficulty of subtitling metaphors by employing Henrik Gottleib’s Subtitling Strategies (1992) and comparing this to Newmark’s procedures for translating metaphors. Metaphors figured out in the script for the Arabic film Salāḥ ad-dīn (Saladin) (1963) are selected as a case study by applying a qualitative analysis of the material under investigation, the results illustrate which strategies are more applicable, bearing in mind the constraints facing the subtitlers while translating metaphors between unrelated languages pairs. Also, it focuses on the effectiveness of subtitling in helping the foreign audience understand Arabic films.","PeriodicalId":472059,"journal":{"name":"CDELT Occasional Papers \"In the Development of English Language Education\" (Print)","volume":"158 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135857571","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research analyzes the lexical choices utilized to represent Muslim and non-Muslim suspects, precisely, in the American channel, Fox News. Reports covering the incidents are selected from ‘Fox News electronic archives’, as it is considered the main source of information in the Western Hemisphere. The research demonstrates how the selection of certain lexical items shapes the identity of Muslim suspects, in contrast to non-Muslim suspects. The analysis framework builds on van Dijk's Socio-cognitive approach to understand how media coverage maintains and reproduces ideology. This study examines and compares the representations of both Muslim and non-Muslim suspects committing similar attacks on the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community (LGBT). It is argued that certain linguistic choices emphasize the negative stance towards Muslims and play down the negative effect against non-Muslims.","PeriodicalId":472059,"journal":{"name":"CDELT Occasional Papers \"In the Development of English Language Education\" (Print)","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135857862","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
