The purpose is to find out the most frequent lexical phrases and their phraseological patterns. In addition, the study is an attempt to explain the cognitive phenomenon behind how linguistic units are constructed, produced and developed into other forms. The theoretical framework is the usage-based cognitive approach that focuses on the integration of lexical items and the role of frequency and usage in entrenching and generalizing new schematic constructions. Corpus linguistics, as a method, analyzes naturally occurring language obtained from corpora by means of specialized software. Both corpora, the Arabic Ar Ten Ten and the En Ten Ten, are processed by Sketch Engine. The Ar Ten Ten corpus, a collection of Arabic texts from the web, is contrasted with the En Ten Ten Corpus that contains materials from leading English newspaper agencies. The results show that all the constructions of the adjective category are operated by the same single category prototype in both languages. All adjective patterns are either instances or extensions of the central prototype.","PeriodicalId":472059,"journal":{"name":"CDELT Occasional Papers \"In the Development of English Language Education\" (Print)","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135857838","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It examines the verbal and visual elements of two selected American awareness posters published on the official Facebook page of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in 2021 and 2022. Since these posters have both visual and verbal components, the objective of this qualitative study is to investigate the semiotic resources utilized in the COVID-19 precautionary posters via employing a multimodal perspective. It implements a descriptive qualitative approach by utilizing diverse analytical tools: the Social Semiotics Approach (Kress and van Leeuwen, 2001), the Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis Approach (Machin and Mayr, 2012), and the Reversal Theory (O’Shaughnessy, J. & O’Shaughnessy, N.J., 2004). It examines the contribution of visual and textual resources to raise awareness among people about the significance of preserving some tools for protection. Hence, this study demonstrates the integration of verbal and visual communicative modes to spread awareness among citizens according to their cultures.","PeriodicalId":472059,"journal":{"name":"CDELT Occasional Papers \"In the Development of English Language Education\" (Print)","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135857613","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It can also produce human-like writing. Cohesion and coherence are major requirements of any piece of writing, and it is assumed that ChatGPT can generate successful essays regarding these language requisites. Adopting Halliday and Hasan’s (1976) theory of cohesion and van Dijk and Kintsch’s (1983) cognitive situation model to achieve coherence, the researcher investigates cohesion and coherence in essays produced by ChatGPT compared to essays produced by students with respect to the same language features. The current study revolves around two major research questions: how are cohesion and coherence manifested in essays produced by ChatGPT, and how do these same language features resemble or differ from essays written by students? To answer these questions, students’ essays from first and fourth years in the English Department at one of the Egyptian private universities and essays produced by ChatGPT on the same prompts were assessed by the two courses’ instructors, qualitatively analyzed by ChatGPT and quantitatively analyzed using Coh-Metrix software version 3.0, and then compared. Findings revealed that ChatGPT can produce human-like essays not only in terms of cohesion and coherence, but also regarding lexical choices and advanced grammatical structures, which poses a great challenge of how to avoid having students plagiarizing from ChatGPT. Accordingly, the article concludes with some recommendations that utilize ChatGPT to enhance learners’ linguistic proficiency without sacrificing the integrity, honesty and reliability of the learning process.","PeriodicalId":472059,"journal":{"name":"CDELT Occasional Papers \"In the Development of English Language Education\" (Print)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135857875","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Setting off from the premise that language practices reflect and shape identities, the researcher examines different categories of signage: street signs, warning notices, informative signs, building names, and advertising signs. Languages and varieties on these signs are identified to document which ones dominate the linguistic landscape. Drawing on Myers-Scotton Matrix Language (2001), the researcher identifies the matrix and embedded language in bi-lingual and diglossic signs. Findings show that, although modern standard Arabic (MSA) features exclusively on official signs, Egyptian colloquial Arabic (ECA) and English are more prevalent, in terms of presence, size, and influence. This prevalence is interpreted using Pennycook (2010) framework, where code choice unveils the motives, and ideologies of a speech community and indexes a linguistic shift. Results demonstrate that two competing forces ‘own the public space’: the official institution, which is in ‘power’, yet owns a small, uninfluential and hardly discernable scale in MSA. The second is that of advertising companies , who appear to outweigh the official force and are capable of designing, changing, and dominating the linguistic landscape. ECA is quintessentially used to address a larger public, and English is used symbolically to segment audience as per their socio-economic class. Findings of the study highlights the salience of this ‘invisible’ tool of language shift. Implications could inform language planning and policy on consistency in the linguistic landscape. It could simultaneously trigger interest in initiating a project for emphasizing the linguistic identity of Cairo, and further Egyptian cities.","PeriodicalId":472059,"journal":{"name":"CDELT Occasional Papers \"In the Development of English Language Education\" (Print)","volume":"124 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135857877","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Four distinctive linguistic features are examined: passivization and modality at the syntactic level and collocations and doublets (two paralleled synonyms) at the lexical level. The results revealed that legal translators are bound by the fidelity and coherence rules to add formality and legal power to the target text; a missed feature in the Google Translate program. It is concluded that the syntactic structure of the legal text of the source language is maintained. However, human translators kept (16%) of the passive structures using active voice instead for clarity while Google Translate maintained (8%) of the passive structures. Modality is rendered to the present simple in Arabic for expressing obligation. It has been reached that human translation is more creative compared to Google Translate. The tool is unable to distinguish the nuances making the legal effect inappropriate to the reader.","PeriodicalId":472059,"journal":{"name":"CDELT Occasional Papers \"In the Development of English Language Education\" (Print)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135857873","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
