Second, it aims to identify critical areas of implementation of digital competency concerning HEIs.Design/methodology/approachKnowledge shall be assessed for talent, training and education, and scientific concentration. Technology will be evaluated based on regulatory, capital, and technological frameworks. Future readiness shall be examined based on adaptive attitude, business agility, and IT integration. The overall status in all three areas will be evaluated, considering contributions made by various stakeholders, such as the government, public agencies, corporations, educational institutions, etc. The data for this exploratory exercise shall be cogenerated from various secondary sources that are available openly.FindingsOman scores above average on parameters of technological and regulatory framework, adaptive attitudes, and IT integration, with an average score above 60 out of 100. Oman’s mean score for sub-factors like talent, training and education, capital, and business agility is average—between 50 and 60. The mean score for scientific concentration is 35.14—below average for this criterion.Originality/valueMost of the studies in Oman have concentrated mainly on teachers' online awareness and competencies, particularly in schools during and after the post-COVID scenario. However, negligible studies are available for higher education. A comprehensive bibliometric analysis is conducted using data extracted from Thomson Reuters' Web of Science, and the analysis is facilitated by the bibliometrix and biblioshiny tools.Design/methodology/approachData was extracted from the Web of Science (WoS) database provided by Thomson Reuters. Therefore, literature published outside of the WoS database was not included. Results were extracted about the Document Type, Research Area, Language, Publication year, and country or countries for all authors because this study was interested in scholarly international collaboration. The researcher also used the Thomson Reuters Web of Science’s InCites Essential Science Indicators database, which allowed the researcher to measure the scientific output performance of countries over a period of time. In addition to InCites data, citation data and international collaboration for all countries were also downloaded.FindingsInclusion and exclusion criteriax: this study focused on literature published by authors identified by each author’s affiliation in each publication. Thus, the WoS topic field was searched by “infodemic” or “information epidemic” or “info ebidemic”. The time span selected for this study started from 2018 to 2022, allowing the researcher to survey the nature of the literature during the last 6 years before COVID-19 and 4 years after COVID-19 to identify the effects of COVID-19 on research in the world regarding both performance and productivity. The study included various types of materials, such as articles, early access, and review articles.Originality/valueA comprehensive bibliometric analysis is conducted using data extracted from Thomson Reuters' Web of Science, and the analysis is facilitated by the bibliometrix and biblioshiny tools. The findings reveal that prior to the COVID-19 outbreak, researchers contributed a total of 3,960 documents, with the United States leading with 2,933 publications, followed by China with 2,561. However, the production of infodemic research doubled following the onset of the pandemic, resulting in a total of 6,979 documents. Once this was completed using RStudio, the combined Scopus and Web of Science Excel file was uploaded into Biblioshiny, an interactive web interface. The data was then categorized to illustrate contributions from authors, journals, countries and academic institutions across the globe.FindingsResults and findings related to publication growth trends, annual growth, core journals, impact and productivity of authors, most cited documents, collaborations, network mapping and country contributions on emerging technologies and higher education libraries are presented.Research limitations/implicationsThis topic requires further exploration as academic librarians are fast becoming integrated into the teaching and learning agenda of institutions globally.Practical implicationsHigher education libraries and library schools to promote the teaching identity of academic librarians by helping them improve their pedagogical and digital skills for online teaching.Social implicationsLibrary and information science schools need to fast track the integration of emerging technologies into the curriculum. Higher education libraries should consider the training of staff in order to keep abreast of emerging technologies. Library management must frame their policies and strategies in order to promote the use of emerging technologies in higher education libraries.Originality/valueThe current study is novel in that it explores emerging technologies and higher education libraries using combined data from Scopus and Web of Science. The topic of emerging technologies and higher education libraries is still developing and therefore is in its infancy. By understanding how users navigate and interact with different apps during their search processes, the study seeks to contribute to the design of more intuitive and user-friendly app systems.Design/methodology/approachThis study employs a mixed-methods approach to analyze users' daily search strategies in a natural cross-app interactive environment. Data collection was conducted using the Critical Incident Technique and the Micro-Moment Time Line, involving 204 participants to capture their real-time search experiences. Open coding techniques were utilized to categorize sequential search tactics, while the PrefixSpan algorithm was applied to identify patterns in frequently applied search strategies.FindingsThe study findings unveil a comprehensive framework that includes a variety of intra-app search tactics and inter-app switching tactics. Five predominant search strategies were identified: Iterative querying, Selective results adoption, Share-related, Recommended browsing, and Organizational results strategies. These strategies reflect the nuanced ways in which users engage with apps to fulfill their information needs.Originality/valueThis research represents a pioneering effort in systematically identifying and categorizing daily search strategies within a natural cross-app interaction context. It offers original contributions to the field by combining intra-app and inter-app tactics, providing a holistic view of user behavior. Data were collected from social media users in Korea using an online survey.FindingsThe findings showed that social media users’ intention to continually use social media for COVID-19 information explained 46.5% of the variance in their perceived severity, perceived susceptibility, perceived benefits, and perceived barriers. The degree of impact and relationships varied across the constructs. Two age groups were examined, and it transpired that perceived risks and perceived use were more highly recognized by young users than old users.Research limitations/implicationsThis study focused on Korean social media users, providing valuable insights but limiting its generalizability. Thus, this study aims to explore libraries’ communication influence on China’s largest short video platform, that is, Douyin (the Chinese version of Tiktok), and to provide corresponding suggestions for improvement of libraries’ communication influence in the short video platform.Design/methodology/approachBased on the Douyin Communication Index (DCI), this paper collects the top 200 library Douyin accounts of cultural reading in China and uses statistical and content analyses to evaluate the communication influence of library Douyin accounts.FindingsStudy findings show that libraries of various types and in various regions currently have an unbalanced development trend, with public libraries accounting for the vast majority and nearly half of the libraries located in China’s eastern region. Analysis of variance shows differences in the influence of Douyin communication among library types. Correlation analysis shows that indicators with a high correlation with DCI include the number of new works, likes, shares, and comments. In marketing content, the library’s high-impact short videos have characteristics of value, interest, and emotional touch.Originality/valueThis study uses a hybrid research method to explore Chinese libraries’ communication influence using the Douyin short video platform. Compared to other parts of the world, short videos in Chinese libraries have unique characteristics. The focus of this study is to explore the characteristics and changing trends of PLKS and how to improve the efficiency of PLKS. The conclusions drawn in this paper are expected to provide important references for academic research and practical exploration in related fields.Design/methodology/approachThis study constructs a three-stage process of PLKS. On this basis, the efficiency is analyzed by using the Super-NSBM model, and the influencing factors of PLKS are analyzed by using OLS. Finally, through the comprehensive interpretation of the measured data and the existing social development conditions, the authors put forward relevant recommendations.FindingsIn the first stage, the PLKS in China meets the basic requirements, but there is an obvious waste of resources in the second stage. In addition, China’s public libraries show obvious regional differences in knowledge service efficiency. Finally, it was found that economic and technological factors can increase the efficiency of PLKS, but the increase in the number of university students will reduce the efficiency of PLKS.Originality/valueIn this study, the authors provide an exhaustive deconstruction and explanation of PLKS, which leads to the proposal of a three-stage PLKS efficiency conversion process. Furthermore, the authors identify a diverse set of quantifiable metrics that are readily accessible for open collection. This research examines the effectiveness of the museum’s exhibition, visitors’ perceptions of multimedia technologies, and the educational role of multimedia technologies in Chinese art and culture.Design/methodology/approachThis research fills the gap with a survey to investigate sociodemographic factors and user perceptions guided by the 5E Instructional Model.FindingsResults indicated that the younger generation is enthusiastic about utilizing multimedia technologies as educational tools when visiting the HKPM museum. Incorporating such technologies in museums can also benefit visitors, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of Chinese art and culture.Originality/valueResults support recommendations for improving the use of multimedia technologies in museums for educational programs and visitor experiences in Chinese art and culture appreciation.
