Each installment will include a topic area such as electrochemistry in archaeology, steel manufacturing, water treatment, etc. and will describe a novel or unconventional application of electrochemistry. We believe that, in doing so, not only will “Electrochemistry in Action” inform readers but perhaps it will even inspire creativity and broaden interest in the field.","PeriodicalId":47157,"journal":{"name":"Electrochemical Society Interface","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46023195","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to low battery energy density limiting the vehicle range, EVs were surpassed by gasoline powered cars that have dominated the auto industry until now. It took electrochemists 100 years to achieve the order of magnitude increase in specific energy needed for electric vehicles to become competitive. The Nobel prize technology of the lithium-ion battery has provided the necessary high energy density together with other excellent performance attributes including high power and long life in an affordable package for the modern EV. This breakthrough has enabled a return to commercialization of electric vehicles this time with excellent performance. Millions of electric vehicles are now being produced and sold globally with huge investments being made in EVs and Li-Ion batteries by the automotive and battery industries.","PeriodicalId":47157,"journal":{"name":"Electrochemical Society Interface","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44960076","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In other words, what makes a given dish delectable to the palate? In my own forays into the kitchen, some culinary creations have turned out exceptionally well while others were less successful. Yet, the raw materials that went into these dishes were not drastically different, except perhaps for the relative proportions and the spices. I posit that the key lies in the complex interfaces between the dish constituents; these interact in a manner that we don’t yet fully understand.","PeriodicalId":47157,"journal":{"name":"Electrochemical Society Interface","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45252215","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Armstrong, Chaoyang Wang","doi":"10.1149/2.f10223if","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1149/2.f10223if","url":null,"abstract":"Recent advances in electrode materials, manufacturing processes, and safety features are enabling Li-ion battery (LIB) designs to better support energy storage needs for the emerging all-electric aviation market. Increases in cell specific energy, improved fast charge and discharge rate capability, and extended cycle-life are required for the next-generation aviation platforms that consist of more-electric, hybrid, and all-electric aircraft designed to reduce generated flight noise and carbon emissions. The success of these emerging Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) markets is highly dependent upon implementing a safe and reliable energy storage system compliant with aircraft system requirements. This work discusses state-of-the-art (SOA) and emerging LIB technology readiness to meet the derived marketplace performance and imposed regulatory requirements for all-electric aircraft. A special focus on advanced LIB safety design guidelines intended to meet the intent of the FAA DO-311A minimum operational performance standard for rechargeable lithium batteries and battery systems installed on aircraft is emphasized.","PeriodicalId":47157,"journal":{"name":"Electrochemical Society Interface","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"64423383","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
