Within this system, some singers employ \"orphan lines,\" where only the first member is sung, and listeners must guess what the meaningful line would be. Roman Jakobson's encouragement to examine such orphan lines in terms of their \"near and distant\" environment is taken as inspiration to explore the image of parentless children in Kmhmu songs about orphans and to suggest lessons for our own ethnographic practice.","PeriodicalId":46681,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF AMERICAN FOLKLORE","volume":"135 1","pages":"412 - 440"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2022-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41589886","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

I analyze the current methods of creating and disseminating various messages (texts, photos, films) related to Catholic apparition sites and pay particular attention to the phenomenon of miraculous pictures, examining the status that is assigned to them. I put forward two basic theses: (1) digital distribution of information about religious revelations is a factor that dynamizes Marian apparitional movements, but at the same time causes them to collide with various hostile reactions from skeptics, which consequently results in a more self-reflective and diverse stance; (2) digital technologies are changing the status and reception of miraculous pictures, which now are no longer only treated as hierophanies and material representations of a supernatural reality but are increasingly understood as symbolic signs of it.","PeriodicalId":46681,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF AMERICAN FOLKLORE","volume":"135 1","pages":"383 - 411"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2022-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41848516","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The selected folktales show that emphasizing binary categories contributes to creating strong emotions, thus conveying the desired message. The fourth chapter includes six tales focused on kosher food and Jewish identity. Four tales portray Jews and Christians eating together with restrictions. The remaining two tales deal with kosher issues in a Jewish kitchen. The tales expose reasons given for the strict rules and the challenges of keeping a kosher diet. With her choice of tales, PintelGinsberg shows that when it comes to kosher food, the “other” may be Christians or Muslims, but they may also be Jews, either men or women who commit a critical mistake during food preparation. The fifth and last chapter focuses on the connection between food and sacred times, as well as its role related to ritual observance and Jewish identity. The tales deal with the tension caused by Shabbat and Holy Day meal preparation. Celestial beings or men’s rules help loosen this tension. While three tales focus on identity, two other tales offer etiological explanations for the connection between a special dish and Jewish law. Such is the tale “Wherefore the Custom of Eating Dairy Products on Shavuot,” which blames women’s rebelliousness for a transformation of tradition, eating simple dairy dishes instead of festive meat dishes on a central Holy Day. PintelGinsberg’s excellent choice to end the book with a tale that combines food, gender, hunger, and satisfaction during a sacred time allows her to bring to the reader’s attention the biblical and Talmudic roots underlying countless Jewish folktales. Supported by a rich bibliography and additional folktales, PintelGinsberg’s indepth discussions create a meaningful dialogue between the storyteller, the author, and the reader. Thus, The Angel and the Cholent is a good reference for anyone interested in the correlation between food and folktales in specific cultural and comparative contexts. As Woltmann states in the introduction, this collection does not intend to engage with the traditional folkloric, deep historical, or psychoanalytic approaches used in folklore or fairytale studies. Rather, this collection creates a wideranging social history for recent Cinderella adaptations, making it especially useful for classes or research that address film and television adaptations of fairy tales. As with similar studies, the scope of this study is as much a drawback as it is a necessity. However, the diversity of perspectives and adaptations add to recent conversations about Cinderella as two new film adaptations of this fairy tale premiere this year. Woke Cinderella is an engaging read that juxtaposes an equal number of experienced scholars with new voices in fairytale studies, highlighting the continued power and relevance of this fairy tale today.","PeriodicalId":46681,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF AMERICAN FOLKLORE","volume":"135 1","pages":"359 - 360"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48840523","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
