Inspired by recent scholarship in periodical and print culture studies that emphasise the value of print ephemera and under-examined ‘back matter’, we consider Heresies’ advertisements and subscription forms as symbolically rich artifacts that allow us to address and understand the implications of the magazine’s perennial struggle to stay financially afloat. This was a struggle complicated by an editorial collective’s suspicion – and indeed, sometimes-outright rejection – of traditional capitalist marketing practices. The pressure of funding a magazine without compromising anti-capitalist and anti-commodity political commitments was felt hard by Heresies, which was, like so many feminist periodicals produced in the 1970s and 1980s, largely volunteer-run, underfunded, and beholden to grants, gifts, generosity, and discounts. Archival records of Heresies’ budgetary woes are sparse; advertisements and subscription forms reveal the magazine’s orientation to its audiences and its political commitments. In contrast, this article develops a theory and method of practice-led research to facilitate better weathering. In so doing the article contends that a transformative feminist response to climate change needs alternative, collective, feminist infrastructures. The feminist specificity of the infrastructure proposed here emerges through its proximity to the concept ‘weathering'. As a feminist figuration, weathering attunes us to human embodiment and difference in a time of climate change, where ‘weather' is not only meteorological, but the total atmospheres that bodies are made to bear. An infrastructure for better weathering thus centres opportunities to acknowledge and account for embodied difference and the differential effects of weather as a specifically feminist design feature. Better weathering is not neoliberal resilience, but rather attention to and redistribution of low-stakes vulnerability as an infrastructural politics. The article proceeds in two parts. We theorise a feminist infrastructure. We then pilot the infrastructure in a series of practice-led research activities. Prior analyses of the Survey results, both in academic scholarship and media commentary, have focused on particular social characteristics of those who supported or opposed the legalisation of same-sex marriage. Building on this foundation, we analyse the differential attitudes and experiences of heterosexual and non-heterosexual participants who voted – or declined to vote – in the Survey. Our analysis draws on original data from a representative survey of Australian voters conducted in 2019 in which we asked participants to reflect on their reasons for voting, their experience of the campaign and their attitudes towards the result. Our data indicate that heterosexual and non-heterosexual voters had distinct and different experiences of the Survey and were motivated to participate for different reasons. The Newberry’s collection of protest materials is a unique and at-times contradictory archival body. What allows these materials to hang together is their glitter proximity; how they shed, spread, accumulate, and intermingle in the stacks. Drawing from in-situ research at the Newberry, as well as interviews with Newberry archivists and an artist creating textiles in response to queer archival absence, this article ‘follows the glitter’ in order to position feminist and queer archival records as transgressive and leaky. Thinking alongside archival theorising on the archival body, and feminist and queer studies of glitter as world-building, I trace and corral glitter across four distinct but interpolated acts of records shaping that constitute the Newberry Library’s collection of protest materials: Initial inscription (glitter on the hands), collective constitution (glitter on the street), institutional archivalisation (glitter on the floor), and artistic use (glitter in the air). By re-reading legal documentation in light of Duden’s contention that embodied experience is not fixed through time but figured according to the gendered, social and synesthetic contexts of different epochs, I seek to add complexity to legal and medical discussions of infanticide in this era by exploring the felt bodies of both the women accused of these practices and their communities. Taking three child murder investigations conducted in Western Australia, I use rare reports of mother’s felt bodily experiences around concealed pregnancy to argue that a mind/body dichotomy was not yet in evidence. Instead, there are indications that these women and their communities still thought of bodies as a system of Galenic humoral temperaments, and this has implications for the denial behaviours that manifested around infanticide practices. Claims by women that they were not pregnant but rather had other medical complaints and the hesitation of community members to accuse mothers despite a suspected pregnancy are bathed in fresh light. In dialogic mode, the authors work through issues and insights that have arisen in the process of researching the life story of Arrernte woman Minnie Undelya Apma, who was abducted as a child from her parents in Central Australia in 1920 by anthropologist Herbert Basedow and his wife Olive (Nell). The process of collaborative research between Kath and Victoria ignited a relationship of mutual understanding and empathy that yielded further enquiries. Fundamentally the process created a space for us to talk and think about the many ways we approach and understand the remarkable history of Minnie Apma’s life, that includes how that story is told and by whom. This article examines two key frameworks which govern ethics in sexual violence research: institutional risk management and trauma discourse. While recognising the importance of these frameworks, we argue that they share a narrow conceptualisation of the potential harms of sexual violence research. Drawing on the legacy of decades of feminist research on sexual violence, we call for a deeper engagement with ethical and epistemological questions of knowledge, positionality and power. We argue that researchers need to consider the broader social and political contexts that shape survivors’ lives and experiences of disclosure in undertaking ethical research. Sexual violence researchers must also consider the potential harms of their research on marginalised communities – from questioning who is included in research, to the implications of the responses to violence advocated for.
