The impetus for writing this article was the jubilee date – the 95th birthday of the famous Ukrainian linguist – Tetyana Borysivna Lukinova, whose entire life is connected with academic science. It is widely known that her doctoral monograph “Numerals in Slavic Languages” (2000) laid the foundations of Ukrainian comparative-historical Slavic studies in the field of numerals, but little is known in the linguistic world about the author’s contribution into linguistic culturology. The proposed article is an attempt to fill this gap. In its framework, Ukrainian and Chinese numerals are considered in a comparative mode, mainly from 1 to 10, on the ground of the linguoculturogical analysis of Ukrainian numerals, already made by Tetyana Borysivna. The purpose of the article is to clarify the cultural lacunae and discrepancies in the sacred numerical code of two rather distant linguocultures (of course, against the background of their archetypally determined commonalities). The realization of this goal has not only theoretical, but also practical significance: in the modern globalized world, there are still cultural national ethnic differences, which can sometimes become an obstacle to effective international communication. Among other language codes, the numerical one is considered the most important, since ancient times, the number has been considered to have a certain mystical side, which is a carrier of knowledge about the deep essence and nature of things, shut for the human mind. The perspective of this exploration can be, on the one hand, a comparison of the cultural significance of the numerical code from 1 to 10 in Chinese and other Slavic languages (Polish, Czech, Slovenian, etc.), and on the other hand, an expansion of the research material in the numerical sphere.","PeriodicalId":46179,"journal":{"name":"STUDIA LINGUISTICA","volume":"289 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90798532","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The result displays that the root μαν- in ancient Greek can be traced back to the Indo-European root *men-/man and refers to the mental sphere. This conclusion is supported by the analysis of derivatives existing in some Indo-European languages. Following the line of thought that studying the derivational capacity is of crucial importance for the analysis of the chosen sub-concept, the paper singles out 28 derivatives formed from the verbal root μαν- with the meaning of mental disorder. The head of all derivatives that evolved from the mentioned root is the noun ἡ μανία and the verb μαίνομαι which belong to the archaic layer of the Greek lexicon. The majority of derived lexemes are represented by adjectives (14 units) and verbs (12 units). A lot of compound adjectives contain –μανης as the second component and the number of such compounds increased from the Hellenistic era onwards. The paper substantiates that when these adjectives realize the nuclear seme “excessive addiction” it combines with the semes of the first component that commonly serve to express the cause of state. Suffixation and stem compounding that are generally typical for nominal parts of speech (nouns, adjectives) were discovered to be the principal types of word formation. Prefixation was less common and was characteristic of verbs. The research findings illustrate how prefixes partially modify the meaning of primary stems and provide new coinages with additional shades of intensity, relationality, directiveness, sociativity. The semantics of derivatives is motivated by the meaning of the initial stem – “presence of mental deviations”, which later developed into the seme of “inadequacy of behavior”, “exaltation” and “inspiration”. All derivatives maintain close semantic ties with the initial stem.","PeriodicalId":46179,"journal":{"name":"STUDIA LINGUISTICA","volume":"43 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73473033","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Borshchevskyi in 2011. The authors review previous linguistic research on the definition of the national-specific vocabulary, its grouping by thematic principle, and analyse the works on realia in the Spanish-Ukrainian language pair. The procedure of studying the functioning of realia in the novel and finding their equivalents in the analysed translations involves the use of corpus linguistics methodology, namely, creating a corpus of parallel texts using the cloud translation management system Memsource and using the AntConc corpus manager to generate word lists and search for the necessary contexts. Considerable attention is paid to the procedure of identifying in the source (Spanish) text mono- and polylexemes with a national-specific meaning, their classification, and search for equivalents in translations of different years in Ukrainian. Based on the analysis of the source text’s corpus employing the AntConc programme, a list of realia was formed. Later, the way they are rendered into Ukrainian was analysed. Most often, realia are presented through transliteration, substitution, omission, and various types of translation.","PeriodicalId":46179,"journal":{"name":"STUDIA LINGUISTICA","volume":"69 4 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76248838","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research was carried out in the context of the anthropocentric linguistic paradigm with the help of the methods of linguistic cognitive analysis. Emotional concepts which are reflected in the concsiousness of speakers by combination of verbal and non-verbal means are being analyzed in the context of the multimodal nature of their implementation. The choice of research material is determined by the possibility of interpreting verbal and non-verbal components in the context of communicative situations. The corpus research methods made it possible to analyze a large volume of material, increased the accuracy of calculations and conclusions. According to our research verbal and visual elements are being used for identification of a character cultural affiliation. The variability of the elements of the visual mode, such as color, font, graphic sign, results in connotations of the elements forming the textual space. Verbal elements perform informative, expressive, appellative and others functions. Multimodal texts are characterized by communicative value, ensuring the coherence of the message. All pieces of literature, without any exception, are the result of multimodal communication between the author and the reader with the help of verbal and non-verbal elements encoded in the sign systems. The presence of polymodal components and their functionality determine the ideological component of a multimodal text. The essence of studying children’s literature as a multimodal text is in identifying different ways of expressing views, positions, attitudes or facts. The perspective of multimodality research we see in the futher use of modern technologies in the transmission of information, hence it increases the variability of modes, the study of which is extremely important.","PeriodicalId":46179,"journal":{"name":"STUDIA LINGUISTICA","volume":"8 5 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90628321","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Gender relations are present in language in the form of culturally conditioned stereotypes that leave an imprint on the process of verbalization depending on the gender of the individual and on the process of his linguistic socialization. In the process of verbalization, the character’s image becomes a category of linguistic consciousness, from which it enters into new associative connections. In the theory of gender, each of the sexes is assigned a set of certain roles in society, as well as personal qualities that play an important role in creating a prototype of male and female in public and individual consciousness. In the analyzed film texts, a number of lexical oppositions were found, which are a kind of projection of gender oppositions – that is, oppositions of stereotypical ideas about what masculinity (man) is and what femininity (woman) is. It is interesting that stereotypical ideas about gender, which exist in the language in the form of oppositions, are practically not explicitly presented in the analyzed film texts. Basically, they are implemented in an implicit, associative (that is, more or less hidden) form. The material of analysis in the work was a feature film that tells about the life and career path of Coco Chanel. The film “Coco Chanel” and the film “Sex and the City”, which depicts female friendship between four female friends. The presence of a gender component in the film text depends on the use of certain linguistic means that can strengthen or weaken the “male/female” dichotomy. The application of the general criteria for the analysis of English language means in the research allows to reveal the peculiarities of the linguistic implementation of modern gender models of behavior. That is why, the study of femininity includes a description of the stereotypes associated with them and the means of formal expression of these stereotypes in the language in the translation aspect.","PeriodicalId":46179,"journal":{"name":"STUDIA LINGUISTICA","volume":"23 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81726326","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is noted that when identifying a group of Paleo-Balkan languages, a single criterion has not yet been clearly established: both areal and genetic principles are involved. At the same time the material of Paleo-Balkan languages is not fully taken into account in the genealogical classification of Indo-European languages; if Thracian, Phrygian, and Illyrian languages are included in this classification as separate groups, then the place of old Macedonian, “Pelasgian”, and other Paleo-Balkan languages in the classification is not defined. In addition, the traditional genealogical classification does not take into account the special proximity of Paleo-Balkan languages to Armenian, Albanian and Ancient Greek. The discovery and study of Paleo-Balkan languages are briefly described. The connections of Paleo-Balkan languages with Albanian, Armenian, Ancient Greek, Hittite, Luvian, Baltic, Germanic, Slavic and Indo-Iranian languages are revealed. The author of the article focuses on the fact that Paleo-Balkan languages are mainly reconstructed at the phonological, lexical, derivational levels (to a lesser extent – at the morphological and syntactic levels), although due to the limited and uneven corresponding data, such reconstruction is also limited, and in some cases contradictory. From the point of view of Indo-Europeanists, lexical elements of Paleo-Balkan origin are recorded in modern Albanian, Greek, Bulgarian, Romanian and Armenian. The article emphasizes that Paleo-Balcanistics provided significant factual material important for substrate theory and contributed to the development of the linguistic stratigraphy method.","PeriodicalId":46179,"journal":{"name":"STUDIA LINGUISTICA","volume":"2 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82723147","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Different national languages embody their unique traditional culture and at the same time are a reflection of the national way of thinking of their speakers, national customs, social values, etc. According to the division into “high-context” and “low-context” cultures, which was proposed by Edward T. Hall (1959), China and Japan appear to be the representatives of high-context culture. That is, in Chinese and Japanese languages, only a small part of the information is transmitted verbally, while the main part of it is provided through the context and circumstances of communication. Refusal is such a speech act that threatens the face of all communication participants. Therefore, in Chinese and Japanese lingual cultures, the vague speech act of refusal is usually used, on the one hand, to reduce the threat of losing face by both counterparties; on the other hand, to maintain good interpersonal relations. However, each of the two languages has its own typological and cultural characteristics, and in this article, the author sets the main goal – to find out the similarities and differences between the Chinese and Japanese vague refusal speech acts based on the grammatical and cultural peculiarities of the languages in focus.","PeriodicalId":46179,"journal":{"name":"STUDIA LINGUISTICA","volume":"22 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77426497","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Glushchenko","doi":"10.17721/studling2022.20.32-44","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.17721/studling2022.20.32-44","url":null,"abstract":"Frontal study of Slavic studies of the 19th century – 30s of XX century testified: the problem of the relationship between vocalism and consonantism in the history of Slavic languages (based on Ukrainian language material) was presented by the Ukrainian linguist Pavlo Zhytetskyi. P. Zhytetskyi put forward a concept within which each considered phonological phenomenon occupies a certain, logically justified place; it is organically included in the general concept, derives from it. According to P. Zhytetskyi, a certain phonological change (the decline of reduced vowels) is the cause of a number of other phonological changes: the decline of reduced vowels as a key process in the «prehistory» and history of the phonological systems of East Slavic languages causes a «chain reaction» in the corresponding vocal and consonant subsystems. P. Zhytetskyi’s thesis that in Slavic languages and their history «poor» vocalism is combined with «rich» consonantism and vice versa, laid the foundations of the historical typology of Slavic languages (on the phonological level) and proved to be very productive in linguistics of the 20th century. It became the basis for the division of Slavic languages into two types – vocalic and consonantal, which were interpreted both in the synchronic and in the diachronic aspect (А. Isachenko, K. Gorshkova, V. Ivanov, V. Kolesov). P. Zhytetskyi reconstructed systems of archetypes and systems of phonetic laws with a similar mechanism (united by a common cause). Thanks to this, the history of the phonetic system of the Ukrainian language in the interpretation of P. Zhytetskyi appears as a chain of causally connected phonetic processes at the level of subsystems (vocalism and consonantism) and signs of sounds (strength and weakness, deafness and sonority, hardness and softness of consonants). This led to the fact that the concept of the connection between vocalism and consonantism in the history of the Ukrainian language by P. Zhytetskyi retained its relevance in comparative-historical and typological linguistics of the 20th century – the beginning of the 21st century.","PeriodicalId":46179,"journal":{"name":"STUDIA LINGUISTICA","volume":"21 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83526868","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this study is to carry out a computer content analysis of memes, to identify their features, and to determine their functions. Researchers analyzed 240 Internet memes about the Russian-Ukrainian war in 2022. Ukrainian social networks were used as the source of memes, the sampling period: from February to October 2022. The sample included memes of the content-image type with a verbal component (creolized memes) or without it (graphic memes). Content analysis was carried out using MAXQDA software. The system of categories (codes) – formal and content – was developed. The formal categories of memes include the following: meme type, meme language, communication levels, topic. The content codes include vocabulary with such subcodes, as standard vocabulary, substandard vocabulary. The analysis of memes with the help of formal categories showed that the most often occurred memes used in social networks are memes on military topic, which contain a verbal component in Ukrainian on the level of communication or some captions or inserts. The analysis of memes about the Russian-Ukrainian war on the lexical level showed that almost half of them contain substandard elements, among which ethnic slurs and obscenities dominate. Euphemisms and neologisms often create a satirical effect. The article also defines the following functions of memes: entertaining, anti-stress, expressive, pragmatic, ethnic, identification, epistemological, of collective involvement. Verbal and visual components of creolized memes do not compete, but complement each other. The perspective of this study is the analysis of humorous techniques in verbal memes.","PeriodicalId":46179,"journal":{"name":"STUDIA LINGUISTICA","volume":"83 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83858947","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
