This article assesses factors that determined the decision of smallholder vegetable producers to participate in vegetable-based agribusiness and analyses the impact of agribusiness participation and other determinants on the economic returns. Structural equation modelling was employed to show a proposed model of cumulative causation theory. Data were compiled from a quantitative survey of 357 selected farm households located in major vegetable-producing areas of Bali and Java, Indonesia. Results show that human capital and household endowment motivated farmers to participate in vegetable-based agribusiness. Women's participation significantly contributed to agribusiness participation and agribusiness participation led to income generation. Opportunities exist to expand vegetable-based agribusiness and increase farmers’ income by providing adequate access to transportation infrastructure, an advantageous agribusiness environment, and investing in human capital through training and extension services.","PeriodicalId":45685,"journal":{"name":"Rural Society","volume":"29 1","pages":"116 - 133"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/10371656.2020.1787621","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44464159","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Interviews were conducted in 2017–2018 and the data were subjected to narrative analysis. Theoretically, the research adopts a feminist approach to space and risk, viewing both as simultaneously material and fluid, intersecting with categories such as gender, class, and centre-periphery. The longer distance to maternity care was found to engender other distances, such as social and political, which were associated with particular risks and power structures. In particular, interviewees referred to a perceived distance from staff at the new hospital that threatened to turn labour into an unsafe experience, and a perceived distance from political decision-making, prompting feelings of unworthiness and distrust. In different ways, navigating these risks reproduced gender roles, and the parents’ social position – including gender, marital status, economic, and social resources – shaped how they navigated the new situation.","PeriodicalId":45685,"journal":{"name":"Rural Society","volume":"29 1","pages":"16 - 29"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/10371656.2020.1751927","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45164866","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this research was to investigate indigenous knowledge indicators in determining climate variability in rural Ghana.. A descriptive case study using mixed-methods was employed. Questionnaire and interviews were used to gather the data from 211 household heads across six study communities. Quantitative data collected was analysed descriptively while the qualitative information was analysed using a thematic approach. Findings revealed indigenous people used the growth of local plants species, chirping of crickets, wind direction, and millipedes’ movement as indicators to detect an approaching season or sudden variation of climate, while the leaves of the “populs” plant and insect chirping were indicators determining excessive heat. The article recommends the Ghana Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology incorporate indigenous knowledge into climate change adaptation policies and strategies.","PeriodicalId":45685,"journal":{"name":"Rural Society","volume":"29 1","pages":"59 - 74"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/10371656.2020.1758434","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43966118","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article investigates livelihood information and knowledge needs, access, and exchange among rural communities in the Bunda District of Tanzania. A mixed research approach was used to collect, analyse, and present field data. Findings illustrate livelihood information and knowledge needs among rural dwellers, and the sources and mechanisms used to access, exchange, and use it, are diverse. Further, factors impeding effective exchange of information and knowledge include provision of irrelevant and untimely information and knowledge presented in user-unfriendly packages that hamper decision-making on livelihood matters.","PeriodicalId":45685,"journal":{"name":"Rural Society","volume":"29 1","pages":"30 - 43"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/10371656.2020.1744271","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42099488","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Being physically and culturally different from the predominant Anglo-Saxon community, how African migrants construct their sense of belonging in regional areas are still unknown. This article explores South Sudanese migrants’ experience in conceptualising their sense of belonging in Castlemaine, Victoria. Using focus group discussions with 42 participants, it shows that despite the welcoming atmosphere, South Sudanese migrants are attracted to cities and feel at home. The article argues that cities make strangers un-noticed and make them feel at “home” using theoretical concepts of “the stranger” and “power”. Research findings show how more diverse environments encourage negotiating difference and ease the power imbalance among different groups. The easy commuting distance of Castlemaine to Melbourne and its suburbs is discussed as a factor of reducing the potential ability in constructing a sense of belonging with the local community.","PeriodicalId":45685,"journal":{"name":"Rural Society","volume":"29 1","pages":"44 - 58"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/10371656.2020.1753329","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46643367","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using the results of a national household survey, this article tests the extent to which the propensity for internal migration varies between city and metropolitan populations. A series of experiments were used to evaluate the relative importance of factors relevant to relocation or commuting to different types of regional centres, as well as the salary increases required. Only about five percent of the workforce were identified as highly mobile, while more than half of the workforce were not prepared to move no matter what increase in salary is offered. Large salary increases would be required to encourage the “average” employee to move to regional areas, especially from metropolitan locations, with larger salary increases required for long-distance commuting.","PeriodicalId":45685,"journal":{"name":"Rural Society","volume":"29 1","pages":"1 - 15"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/10371656.2020.1761599","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48892053","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A programme was implemented for first-year students enrolled in various disciplines at regional university campuses in South Australia from 2013 to 2015. Programme outcomes were evaluated using pre- and post-training questionnaires administered to participants to assess changed mental health perceptions or practices. A paired-sample t-test showed statistically significant improvement following the programme. Students learnt coping strategies and skills to care for their own mental health and planned to apply what they learned for their benefit and in their professional practice.","PeriodicalId":45685,"journal":{"name":"Rural Society","volume":"28 1","pages":"198 - 211"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/10371656.2019.1678805","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45188111","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Hospedaria Montanha Beija-Flor Dourado (Golden Hummingbird Mountain Lodge) in the rural area of Morretes, a municipality in the eastern portion of the state of Paraná, Brazil, became the object of the research which was based on phenomenological, qualitative, exploratory and descriptive study values. The research used primary and secondary data sources. Primary data, and its analysis, consisted of reading the sites in loco using photographic and architectural survey to read the space and consultation of websites, folders, brochures, and videos about the lodge, which were described in the light of assembly theory based upon the concept of abduction of Peircean semiotics. Results presented the denotation of consensus in rural accommodation environments about meaning spaces for civic initiatives, solutions to social demands, and collaborative arrangements in the Brazilian rural area.","PeriodicalId":45685,"journal":{"name":"Rural Society","volume":"28 1","pages":"212 - 225"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/10371656.2020.1726038","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45503543","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The statistical population consisted of the members of a women’s cooperative named “Tafihan,” which has a total population of 418 members, from which 200 were sampled. The findings show that, based on Kanji and Greenwood’s ladder of participation [2001. Participatory approaches to research and development in IIED: Learning from experience. London: IIED], women’s participation was mostly at the level of “surrender” or “acceptance,” while the least participation was seen at the level of “consultation” and “contemplation”. To explain factors influencing the amount and level of women’s participation, four main stages of cooperative activities were used in the project cycle, with a linear regression test used to find each influential factor that predicted the effect in different stages.","PeriodicalId":45685,"journal":{"name":"Rural Society","volume":"28 1","pages":"240 - 255"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/10371656.2019.1687872","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41886038","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Specifically, this article focuses on campground entrepreneurship, a sub-segment of rural tourism lacking much academic research. Findings demonstrate the experiences of intra-EU lifestyle expat-preneurs are absent from currently dominating theoretical, as well as political, discourses on migration and integration. The article concludes arguing campground entrepreneurship is a powerful catalyst of lifestyle migration, but the very nature of this business is an inhibiting, rather than supporting factor, for rural community integration.","PeriodicalId":45685,"journal":{"name":"Rural Society","volume":"28 1","pages":"183 - 197"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/10371656.2020.1718329","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49360376","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
