As most institutional forms of ‘civil society’ are deeply distrusted, everyday civility among Palestinians dynamically reacts to occurrences of political violence. Based on ethnographic fieldwork in Nablus in 2013 and 2014, this article argues that bottom-up civility constitutes a medium for addressing ethical and political questions about how to live together in dignity in the midst of a repressive and opaque political landscape. As such, civility can be understood as a form of collective ethical self-care. People laterally discipline one another to embody dignity and piety in their face-to-face interactions and to express respect for victims by hiding signs of consumption and market transactions. What started as peaceful demonstrations against another term of president Nkurunziza, quickly turned into violent confrontations between mostly young male civilians and government forces. The demonstrations signalled the beginning of a new political crisis after a decade of peace. In this paper, we draw on eye-witness accounts of civilians to understand the escalation of violence. We argue that legacies of conflict informed the understanding and escalation of the violence. For instance, memories and skills learned by adults and older peers during the civil war were passed on to novices to organise protests and neighbourhood defence. Yet the legacies of conflict also juxtaposed with protesters’ ideals on ‘civil’ non-violent political dialogue. As an internationalised territory and with an unresolved political status, the post-war interim constitution-making process was mainly shaped by a non-consensual idea of statehood regarding whether Kosovo was entitled to sovereign statehood. This article traces the antagonistic goals between Albanian and Serb ethnic groups within the country, on the one hand, and the international statebuilders, on the other hand, during the constitution-making process. Kosovo’s post-war constitution-making became the main instrument of an incremental international statebuilding.
