Today we are looking at how the mobility of people and goods will evolve in the coming years. With reference to this topic, Hyperloop has been at the core of the debate. Scientists and engineers believe that this technology is a great opportunity for the modern society. Nonetheless, it still presents several unsolved issues. The purpose of this work is to propose a methodology to perform technical and economic pre-feasibility studies related to the hyperloop system, with specific focus on transport demand analysis, transport sizing of the infrastructure and cost analysis of CAPEX - CAPital EXpenditure and OPEX - OPerating EXpense. For the evaluation of the potential demand, the paper refers to the Multinomial Logit model, calibrated through SP – Stated Preferences surveys. Once the Logit model has been calibrated, it is possible to envisage different scenarios, such as maximum transport demand or maximum revenue, which will be used for the subsequent design of the transport system. As far as the sizing is concerned, some technical parameters of the project are required, such as: length of the route, maximum speed, and acceleration. The combination of the scenarios defined through the calibration of the Logit model and the project parameters, allows to define several scenarios representing the potential performances of the analyzed system. Given the possible performances of the transport service, an analysis of costs and potential revenues that determines the most efficient solution can be carried out. In addition, parametric values per km can be used to define CAPEX and OPEX. The methodology illustrated above, has been applied to a case study in Italy of the Rome-Milan OD (Origin – Destination), as it is one of the national routes with the highest volume of traffic and the largest number of modal choices.","PeriodicalId":45410,"journal":{"name":"European Transport-Trasporti Europei","volume":"12 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2023-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88915543","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Concerning accessibility, the access to the nearest hospital should be guaranteed from each city in the region in an acceptable time. Concerning safety, road arterials travelled by emergency vehicles should have high safety standards, for emergency vehicles and the reduction of congestion due to traffic crashes. This study aims at providing a methodological framework (tested in the case of Apulia, Italy) to conduct accessibility and safety assessments at the regional level, in case of existing and new hospitals. Accessibility and safety were studied setting specific metrics, like time to reach the hospital and accident analysis at macroscopic level to plan safety interventions. The least safe road sites in the ranking obtained by applying the proposed indicators for new and existing hospitals can be improved.","PeriodicalId":45410,"journal":{"name":"European Transport-Trasporti Europei","volume":"48 1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2023-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89160637","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The case study is the University of Catania (Italy), with about 40,000 students and 2500 employees. An online survey was conducted to analyse potential user mobility habits, propensity and preferences towards different services proposed by the app. A Multiple Correspondence Analysis was also performed to find clusters and correlations among variables and derive useful information on the target users of a MaaS-like service for a University community. Results show a general interest but also highlight some weaknesses that should be addressed to improve the efficiency of the services offered by a MaaS-like application.","PeriodicalId":45410,"journal":{"name":"European Transport-Trasporti Europei","volume":"38 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2023-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84208079","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Studies also show that road congestion can affect the competitive position of ports. The problem can be tackled in a number of ways. The paper is divided into two parts. In the first part of the paper, the authors analyse the literature on the effectiveness of various procedures and upgrades at the port gates that can improve the gate turnaround times. The second part is a case study. In the second part of the paper, the authors quantify the current negative impacts of port-related road congestion and the benefits of introducing selected measures at the gates of the port of Koper. Isolation of single best measure is impossible due to simultaneous introduction of measures.","PeriodicalId":45410,"journal":{"name":"European Transport-Trasporti Europei","volume":"97 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2023-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75950107","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Reducing the negative effects of transport is a strategic objective of the EU, which has put in place a series of actions to promote cleaner and more efficient transport modes, using more sustainable technologies, fuels, and infrastructure. The development of more sustainable and zero-emission collective transport solutions implies the use of novel propulsion systems capable of using energy carriers produced from renewable energy sources. This article deals with the preliminary design and performance analysis of a hydrogen hybrid passenger bus to be used in a mountainous area characterized by mainly curvilinear routes with high gradients both uphill and downhill, within an experimental context of technological-energy innovation. The study is part of a wider project (LIFE3H) co-funded by the European Union, which, among other objectives, intends to lay the bases for the development of a Hydrogen Valley (integrated hydrogen production, storage, and use site), through public hydrogen transport and refuelling stations in the mountain area of “Altopiano delle Rocche” in Abruzzo (Italy). The studied vehicle power-train configuration is based on an electric motor fed by a hybrid power unit consisting of a hydrogen fuel cell functionally coupled with an electrochemical battery. A minibus configuration run over a round trip path according to the real traffic conditions is simulated and main vehicle powertrain components are sized. Finally, hydrogen consumption for traction is estimated.","PeriodicalId":45410,"journal":{"name":"European Transport-Trasporti Europei","volume":"117 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2023-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87093997","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several authors have characterized traffic loads on bridges in the American and Chinese context using Weigh-in-Motion (WIM) systems. Conversely, very few studies have been carried out in Europe and, as far as the authors know, none in Italy. This study covers this gap by providing a statistical analysis of raw WIM data collected on a main bridge near the city of Brescia (Italy). First, the traffic flow and the characteristics of vehicles were gathered by a WIM device. Second, some descriptive statistics were performed by computing the probabilistic distributions of numerous vehicular attributes. Third, as a novelty element, a K-means based Clustering technique was adopted on a wide set of vehicular features to detect heavy vehicle clusters. The results showed the existence of three main clusters: two predominately composed by lightly overloaded ordinary vehicles and construction machinery, respectively, and one by mass exceptional vehicles. This study considers a broader set of vehicular parameters than previous ones and then, provides a deeper understanding. Moreover, it shows that axle mass limits violations are noteworthy among mass exceptional vehicles in Italy highlighting the need of improving weight enforcement. These knowledges will be crucial for a rational organisation of the existing assets.","PeriodicalId":45410,"journal":{"name":"European Transport-Trasporti Europei","volume":"14 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2023-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82539219","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Particularly, walking could be considered as an alternative to short trips made by car in more densely inhabited areas. For promoting pedestrian mobility, the quality levels of pedestrian paths should be increased. At this regard, collecting pedestrians’ perceptions about the path characteristics is fundamental. In this paper, perceptions are collected in terms of Stated Preferences (SP) by detecting the choices pedestrians would make in hypothetical scenarios characterized by certain service quality levels. More specifically, this work aims to analyze pedestrian preferences by highlighting gender differences through discrete choice modelling. An SP survey was addressed to a sample of 240 Italian university students, and mixed logit models were calibrated. In this research paper, a Heritage BIM (H-BIM) approach was developed to recreate an archaeological road to accomplish the disruption analysis of stone pavements. In detail, within Autodesk Infraworks the conceptual model of the road and the digital terrain model (DTM) was generated; then the road corridor design process was performed within Autodesk Civil 3D using a parametric road section which was created by means of Subassembly composer, a Civil 3D extension. Subsequently, a visual programming application, Dynamo, based on Python language, was adopted to extract and update corridor information. In detail, a workflow was developed to implement a disruption analysis of road stone pavements and the output of the calculation were inserted in the model. As preliminary results, a tool is proposed to support the authorities and experts during the managing processes.","PeriodicalId":45410,"journal":{"name":"European Transport-Trasporti Europei","volume":"75 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2023-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83283366","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on the sample of 436 students from India, the results indicate that environmental concern is the most important factor influencing purchase intention. However, the students also prefer an automotive design and value social norms. The study also identifies that government policy influences purchase intention through the mediation of charging and driving convenience. These findings imply that the government's adoption of electric vehicle policy might boost the production of and demand for e-cars in the country. Furthermore, producers can gain a competitive edge by addressing driving convenience, charging convenience, and vehicle design, and by highlighting the environmental benefits of e-cars.","PeriodicalId":45410,"journal":{"name":"European Transport-Trasporti Europei","volume":"312 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88107652","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Walkability is gaining interest as a non-motorised mode of transportation, and walking to public transport is deemed necessary for sustainable cities. This study intends to select, rank, and prioritise parameters of 'walkability to public transport' for urban areas of Kerala, a southern state in India. Upon a basic framework of walkability parameters obtained after the literature review, the Delphi Method was used to elicit and select the most significant walkability parameters from various domains, including transportation, planning, and urban design. Analytical Hierarchy Process was used to weigh the relative significance of parameters and sub-parameters. The study found that 'Immediate Walking Environment' was top priority, and 'Urban Design Qualities' was ranked least. The methodology will guide future researchers to pursue walkability studies in other cities by adopting this methodology with contextual variations if needed.","PeriodicalId":45410,"journal":{"name":"European Transport-Trasporti Europei","volume":"5 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75429049","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
