Furthermore, similar activities have a very relevant impact on environment, climate, health and well-being of citizens. An updated version of the Combined Transport Directive is planned for the Third Quarter of the European Commission's activity, which supports transition from road freight transport to low-emission modes, such as inland waterways, maritime and rail transport. Within this complex framework, present paper outlines first considerations coming from two projects currently taking place in Northern Italy, and more specifically within Liguria Regional context: \"viAmare\" and \"Mobimart Plus\". The shared aim is to develop short \"seaways\" solutions for passenger and freight on a local, regional and cross-border scale (Italy / France), starting from Genoese metropolitan area as a pivotal site. First outcomes of the research, after an initial phase of ports’ selection according to boats general features, show the importance of verifying different economic service scenarios and connections of more performative quays with urban regeneration projects of the waterfront.","PeriodicalId":45410,"journal":{"name":"European Transport-Trasporti Europei","volume":"14 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87784025","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, it is also necessary to attain higher levels of performance by ensuring higher transit ridership measured in terms of passengers carried per day. The present work is focused on the analysis of performance efficiency and service effectiveness of 25 selected State Road Transport Undertakings (SRTUs) in India for the year 2004-05, 2009-10 and 2014-15. Here, it was proposed to use a hybrid output-oriented Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) approach developed by Seiford and Zhu in 2002 to handle undesirable outputs such as annual Carbon-di-oxide (CO2) emitted per passenger-km, and total accidents per year in addition to overall productivity. The results of the analysis provided details on targets that could be achieved for the available input resources allocated. Transport organizations can adopt similar approaches in performance evaluation and benchmarking considering sustainability, and social responsibility along with efficiency.","PeriodicalId":45410,"journal":{"name":"European Transport-Trasporti Europei","volume":"287 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74984913","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Emergency rear lighting systems significantly increase vehicle visibility but are limited, as they cannot be seen from a long distance and act exclusively parallel to the road axis. Present research demonstrates the validity of an innovative project able to transform a light into a lifesaving instrument. The project is based on the use in emergencies or during poor visibility driving conditions, of a colored lighting system, on a vertical axis, installed on the vehicle roof. According to a hypothetical point of view, the adoption of this innovative system ensures better visibility of the vehicle in all directions at long distance, and increases the safety of drivers and passengers. The system operates simply and its adoption does not represent a high cost so it can easily be implemented as best practice by vehicle manufacturers.","PeriodicalId":45410,"journal":{"name":"European Transport-Trasporti Europei","volume":"78 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80905146","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Deviations from average and buffer time indices (indicating reliability) are calculated for waiting delay, ferry journey and total travel time of passengers. Although the ferry journey is fairly reliable (6-19% deviations), large unreliability persists in waiting time (56-95% deviation). Intuitively, it decreases in locations with higher frequencies and passenger flow. Further, consistency in maintaining fixed frequency results in passengers remembering the schedule and arriving just in time, as observed statistically. A 50% hypothetical increase of frequency with fixed departures decreases the waiting delay by 29-59% and increases the reliability by 30-96%. The outcome of this paper can invigorate transportation operations over short waterway routes, as the result provides implications from the passengers’ and operators’ perspectives.","PeriodicalId":45410,"journal":{"name":"European Transport-Trasporti Europei","volume":"23 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81705749","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a decrease in outdoor trips and hence patronage of public transportation. Therefore, this study attempted to investigate the influence of the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic on the choice of public transportation modes and travel decisions by Ghanaians. A Google form questionnaire was administered to 2030 participants across all the 16 regions in Ghana. The study indicated that Ghanaians were aware of the COVID-19 disease, how it was spread and various preventive protocols. In addition, a significant change was observed in the choice of public transportation modes where there was a shift to private cars and hired private taxi usage during the outbreak of COVID-19 compared to the pre-COVID-19 era. The ordered logit model predicted that the COVID-19 pandemic had a 17.7 % minor impact on the transportation mode choice of Ghanaians. Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic was likely to have a higher impact on social activities of youths in the age group of 30-39 years than on adults from 60 years and above and hence travel decisions. Finally, the model predicted that the demographic characteristics were 16.7% and 20.7% more likely to influence the choice of public transportation and private car usage respectively of Ghanaians during the COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, the eruption of the COVID-19 pandemic impacted on social activities, affected travel decisions and hence influenced the choice of public transportation modes of Ghanaians although these unexpected changes may not last. It is anticipated that life activities will be normal if the COVID-19 pandemic is declared over.","PeriodicalId":45410,"journal":{"name":"European Transport-Trasporti Europei","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82180456","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Universities with residential accommodation facilities for students become one of the largest trip generators particularly during vacation as most of the students travel to their respective hometown. This study provides an insight into the travel mode choices of typical Indian university students travelling to home during vacation, by examining the travel patterns of students belonging to National Institute of Technology, Durgapur, an Indian higher education institution situated in a tier-II industrial Indian town. Initially, a web-based travel behavior survey was designed to elicit socio-economic, mode-specific information from a total of 618 students. Based on the collected data, multinomial logit model was developed to analyze the mode choice decisions of the students. Results indicate that family income, vehicle ownership, travel-characteristics (whether travelling alone or with others) and time of travel significantly affect the mode preferences of student-travelers. It was also observed that with economic prosperity, the use of flexible and comfortable modes of transport like car and bus increases. Family vehicle ownership was also found to play a major role on car usage. Interestingly, bus was found to be the least preferred mode for night-time travel by students travelling alone. The proposed methodology and study findings would help to understand the university students’ travel characteristics while travelling to home during vacations and devise necessary transportation planning policies.","PeriodicalId":45410,"journal":{"name":"European Transport-Trasporti Europei","volume":"3 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81653792","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper identifies factors influencing safety perceptions of bus users by employing Ordered Logistic Regression analysis. The study focussed on five dimensions; bus stops' design and surrounding facilities, traffic characteristics, and travellers' individual, travel and accident characteristics. The results demonstrated that increased vehicular flow, absence of footpath, crossing facility and safety barrier would scale down the perceived safety. Furthermore, the respondent's age, education, frequency of travelling by bus, familiarity with the bus stop, and previous accident experience are significant predictors of perceived safety. Results concluded that females perceived less safe, and no effects can be attributed to the household vehicles and income. Regarding road shoulder width, 1-2 meters is the most preferred width from the travellers' safety perspective.","PeriodicalId":45410,"journal":{"name":"European Transport-Trasporti Europei","volume":"97 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84725424","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the lack of data on performance in the field has spurred this investigation into their in-situ properties. A lightweight deflectometer (LWD) is a fast and simulative testing device for estimating the elastic modulus of unbound pavement layers. A field test pit was built to run LWD measurements on an unbound subbase layer containing CDW aggregates compacted at different energy levels. To assess their stress-strain non-linear behaviour, several LWD drops were performed on the same location by varying (i) the loading mass, (ii) the drop height, and (iii) the plate diameter. A stress-hardening behaviour of in-situ CDW aggregates was observed, consistent with the stress dependent evolution of resilient modulus of granular material commonly recorded in laboratory tests. The LWD modulus was found to be dependent on the level of compaction energy but also sensitive to the mechanical response of the layer below. The outcomes at this test pit suggest it would be wise to consider the rational evaluation of the in-field stress dependent behaviour of unbound CDW granular materials at both the design stage and when devising quality acceptance procedures. Nonetheless, to have a comprehensive interpretation of LWD results a greater uniformity of material properties and a stronger control of construction procedures will be desired, especially when heterogenous materials such as CDW aggregates are investigated.","PeriodicalId":45410,"journal":{"name":"European Transport-Trasporti Europei","volume":"60 5 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2023-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89783526","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Traditionally, accessibility is measured as the quality of maritime links that connect ports together, without considering the port’s characteristics. Differently from previous studies, this paper also focuses on the internal accessibility of the port. In so doing, the PAI will combine the Liner Shipping Connectivity Index with other factors, such as, time at port of container ships, maximum quay depth and number of containers per quay crane (QC) or per yard area. The application considers the 34 main Mediterranean container ports in terms of TEUs handled in the last decade. The results can contribute to highlight and identify the potential elements that could improve the accessibility of Mediterranean container ports, providing decision-makers with a useful wealth of knowledge when carrying out management strategies. Future studies may concern the extension of the research to other geographical areas with the inclusion of additional indicators (e.g., road and/or rail accessibility).","PeriodicalId":45410,"journal":{"name":"European Transport-Trasporti Europei","volume":"8 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2023-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87123503","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

First, there is the urgency to achieve transport decarbonisation and, in general, sustainable mobility (Banister, 2019). In parallel, the events of the last years, especially COVID-19 pandemic, have posed significant challenges on transport systems that are likely to lead to structural changes in transport demand (Das et al., 2021). Besides, technological innovations enabling new Mobility on Demand services and concepts like MaaS (Mobility ad a Service) are also responsible of a restructuring of both transport demand and supply towards personalized and on-demand services (Shaheen and Cohen, 2020, Le Pira et al., 2021). New scenarios for transport systems are therefore needed to reach inclusivity, resilience and sustainability. This is the rational of the special issue that stems from the AIIT 3rd International Conference on Transport Infrastructure and Systems (TIS ROMA 2022), which was held in Rome on 15th-16th September 2022 (https://tisroma.aiit.it/). The conference was organized by AIIT, the Italian Association for Traffic and Transport Engineering, and hosted by ACI, Automobile Club d’Italia.","PeriodicalId":45410,"journal":{"name":"European Transport-Trasporti Europei","volume":"29 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2023-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85172985","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
