ISUF is expanding the field of urban morphology beyond its original confines in geography, particularly into the domains of architecture and planning. Three schools of urban morphology, in England, Italy and France, are coming together, following seminal work by two morphologists, M.R.G. Conzen and Saverio Muratori. The bringing together of these schools provides the basis for an interdisciplinary field and the opportunity to establish common theoretical foundations for the growing number of urban morphologists in many parts of the world. ISUF's ambitious mission is to address real and timely issues concerning city building by providing a forum for thought and action which includes related disciplines and professions in different cultures. The potential of an interdisciplinary urban morphology to contribute to the understanding and management of urban development in a period of unprecedented change is discussed.","PeriodicalId":45374,"journal":{"name":"URBAN MORPHOLOGY","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2022-08-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49193656","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The significant role of urban green spaces and vegetated areas has received attention from ecologists, environmentalists and planners. However, urban morphologists have only recently begun considering green space, and morphological analyses of green space are still rare. This study addresses this gap in historico-geographical and process typological approaches in order to examine the possibility of identifying ‘Green Space’ (GS) as an individual element in the urban structure. It proposes a systematic framework for assessing GS structure based on existing hierarchical theories in urban morphology that were introduced by M. R. G. Conzen, Caniggia, Kropf and Osmond. The framework is tested on the case study of the Çağlayan neighbourhood in Northern Nicosia to assess the opportunities provided by the framework, its limitations and factors that played a role in its successful implementation.","PeriodicalId":45374,"journal":{"name":"URBAN MORPHOLOGY","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44562806","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Termed morpho, it deals with fundamental elements of urban form: streets, plots and buildings. It includes seven assessment criteria: one for each of the elements individually; one for each relation between pairs of elements; and finally, one linking form and function. The application of this methodology provides a quantitative assessment of the ‘morphological basis’ of an urban area, identifying its strengths and weaknesses. It is argued that morpho can make an important contribution to urban research and practice.","PeriodicalId":45374,"journal":{"name":"URBAN MORPHOLOGY","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2022-04-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45616736","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The characteristics of previous studies are examined in relation to these perspectives. In this light the investigation of the fringe belts, especially the inner fringe belt, of the Mediterranean port city of Mersin reveals the emergence of three distinct functional sections within the inner fringe belt and the merging of the inner and middle fringe belts. Phases and processes of development are examined. The absence of a significant fixation line until the construction of the ring road well into the post-war period has been a major factor influencing the historico-geographical pattern of fringebelt development. The findings are related to those of previous fringe-belt studies. \u0000 ","PeriodicalId":45374,"journal":{"name":"URBAN MORPHOLOGY","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2022-04-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47318830","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
