Most of these injuries recover uneventfully with appropriate conservative management. A subset of patients do not heal adequately and develop chronic lateral ankle instability that requires surgical stabilization. Within this group of patients are those that will benefit from allograft<span> reconstruction to augment the lateral ligamentous repair in cases of poor native tissue or high force demands on the ankle. There is growing evidence, both from cadaver studies and </span>clinical research, that augmentation with a suture tape construct significantly add to the strength and durability of a standard repair. Not only does it increase the time zero strength, but it also allows for a more aggressive rehabilitation program and earlier return to sports without compromising the primary repair. Not uncommonly, these secondary considerations tend to be financial in nature. This fact, in itself, is not unethical, and, given the close involvement of orthopedic surgeons with many industry-driven innovations, conflicts of interest are omnipresent. Early acknowledgment and candid disclosure of this fact by the involved parties ensures transparency and enriches the audience's perspective of the products of collaborations. Fu, MD was a transformational advocate and leader in orthopedic<span> surgery, sports medicine, and musculoskeletal research. He also respected, nurtured, and participated in </span></span>articular cartilage research. A lot of what we know about articular cartilage stems from studies led by orthopedic faculty at the University of Pittsburgh. These contributions include pioneering work on articular cartilage metabolism and the effects of corticosteroids, the chondrotoxicity of </span>local anesthetics, and </span>chondrocyte<span> transplantation for articular cartilage repair. Orthopaedics is well suited to the practice of innovation, and indeed many innovative practices have changed the landscape of musculoskeletal care, from the first intramedullary nails to </span>anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction<span>. The position is integrated into the health care delivery of the athletes. This physician has special training and insight into the nature of sporting-related injuries as well as sideline emergencies and is responsible for managing the health of the team and individual athletes of all ages. The team physician has a unique role as a practitioner and functions as a special kind of physician requiring a wider knowledge and technical skillset, greater leadership aptitude, and larger emotional intelligence than practice otherwise usually requires.
