At the same time, we must be attentive to diverse interpretations of academic rigour; varied institutional expectations regarding impact factor, acceptance rates and peer review practices; and financial limitations in relation to language translation and manuscript editing. We also remain aware of the high volume of journals competing in the academic marketplace and the increasingly difficult task of attracting article submissions in a world that still does not reward work on children or spirituality at the same level as other scholarly pursuits. Producing a high-quality journal in the face of these many challenges is an exercise in negotiation and compromise. Yet, we cannot lose sight of the importance of listening across cultures, exploring ideas from fields other than our own and attending to how theories are embodied in the practices of those who work most closely with children on a day-to-day basis. One of the most striking aspects of conversations that include scholars and practitioners from different countries is how quickly we discover that the vocabularies we take for granted do not always signify the same meaning outside our cultural context. Take, for example, the term ‘childhood’, which may mean the period of life before the onset of puberty, a longer period that extends from birth until legal adulthood, the first two decades of life or some other span of time defined by cultural norms. Or the term ‘evangelical’, which may refer to all non-Catholic religious traditions in some cultures, a specific set of Protestant traditions with particular theological beliefs in other settings or a specific historical tradition (e.g. the German Evangelical Church). ‘Kindergarten’ can refer to educational systems prior to the start of formal schooling or the first year of formal education. Similar interpretive difficulties can arise with terms like ‘philosophy’, ‘theology’, ‘humanist’, ‘pluralism’ and ‘spirituality’. Rather than expend time and energy looking for common definitions of these key terms, a well-constructed international and interdisciplinary conversation encourages each participant to define these terms contextually and share with listeners (readers) what the speaker (author) means. Furthermore, regular engagement in such conversations reminds us that our terms are socially constructed and thus must be regarded with a hermeneutics of suspicion. Meaning is fluid, not fixed, and we do well to hold our terminology lightly so that we can alter our definitions if they become unhelpful or distracting to our own work or our attempts to communicate with others. International and interdisciplinary conversations also reveal the plurality of academic standards that guide our research. Some scholars are steeped in the statistical methods of quant","PeriodicalId":45218,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Childrens Spirituality","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2015-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/1364436X.2015.1045705","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60084732","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Both the Multi-Dimensional Students’ Life Satisfaction Scale (MSLSS) and Spiritual Health and Life Orientation Measure (SHALOM) were employed. The sample comprised 6917 junior secondary students, aged 12–15. Results indicate that gender differences exist in specific domain scores of MSLSS and SHALOM. Overall, girls reported higher levels of life satisfaction and SH than boys. Segmented and differentiated interaction effects were identified. Greater interaction effects with regard to religious affiliation were noted among SA students compared to Hong Kong Chinese and CIS. Religious Chinese immigrant boys scored higher on their personal–communal combined life satisfaction but lower on their transcendental well-being compared to their Hong Kong counterparts. Significant parental education and family income moderation effects were only observed on the SH of local Chinese girls.","PeriodicalId":45218,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Childrens Spirituality","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2015-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/1364436X.2015.1061485","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60084780","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Parents may hesitate to bring a special needs child to a church service, uncertain of the outcome. While public schools have amazing support for the differently abled, the Church very rarely has assistance in place for the families of handicapped individuals, let alone theology for the parents of mentally disabled children. This paper will examine possible ways for a local church leader or volunteer to educate children with mental disabilities, drawing on a variety of texts for support. The paper will conclude by offering resources for the teachers of special needs children in church education.","PeriodicalId":45218,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Childrens Spirituality","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2015-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/1364436X.2015.1030593","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60085162","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Because the spiritual is often a hidden domain of life, exploration of the topic can be challenging, especially when dealing with children. Language is not always sufficient for describing such deeply held experiences, even for adults. Therefore, finding creative ways to elicit experiences of the spiritual is important when attempting to gain a more robust understanding of this phenomenon. Drawing from a larger study that used hermeneutic phenomenology to explore spirituality among ill children, this paper provides an interpretation of ill children’s play experiences and describes how these experiences provide a means of uncovering the spiritual in children’s everyday lives as they cope with life-threatening illness. Findings also provide insight into how play can be used in the promotion of spiritual well-being.","PeriodicalId":45218,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Childrens Spirituality","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2015-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/1364436X.2015.1030595","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60084731","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Aim and objectives: To examine whether or not fundamental undergraduate children’s nursing textbooks include spiritual care content. Methods: Five hundred and nineteen books were sampled from the Nursing and Midwifery Core Collection list (UK) using a survey, the Spirituality Textbook Analysis Tool (STAT) to collect data. Analysis and Results: 519 books were included in the study using the STAT and 13 books included content on children’s spirituality. There were a variety of textbooks in the audit of those that made reference to the search terms in the STAT, it was found that content mainly addressed only two areas; religious faiths and the dying child. Recommendations: Children’s nurses require education about children’s spiritual developmental stage and age appropriate spiritual assessment. A lack of detailed information in core children’s nursing textbooks means that this area of nursing practice may be taught as an adjunct to care and not as an element of holistic care which is the gold standard that children’s nurses should strive for.","PeriodicalId":45218,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Childrens Spirituality","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2015-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/1364436X.2015.1055458","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60084742","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The issue of ageing and the problems of cultural diversity are dealt with in two articles – general issues, but well written. The issue of assisted reproductive technologies has for a long time been an ethical issue; in this book, it is discussed as a matter of pastoral care. The event of 9/11 2001 has also become a challenge to pastoral care in many ways. The article in this book takes a narrative approach via a member of the corps of Fire Chaplains serving the rescuers in the aftermath of the catastrophe. The last article is a discussion of racial healing and the significance of forgiveness. This has also a specific history in the USA, but is of global significance in its discussion of the power of and steps towards internal and external forgiveness and of the relationship between ‘remorse only’ and actual reconciliation. The Bloomsbury Guide to Pastoral Care is not a big book, and covering so many important issues in a small volume could easily result in superficiality. The editors and the authors have managed to avoid that danger by limiting both the selection of topics and the scope of each article, although the depth and quality vary. Experts in pastoral care will recognise some issues and call for more depth, but there are highlights that deserve close attention, and there should be enough empirically based discussion with good references for further reading to vouch for a good learning experience for the expert as well as for the student, or for representatives of other disciplines – not least disciplines concerned with understanding the meaning of a spiritual outlook on life.","PeriodicalId":45218,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Childrens Spirituality","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2015-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/1364436X.2014.988004","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60085065","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These are: Lao-tzu, Plato, Dante, Emerson, Swedenborg, William James, Jung and Bohm. Also included are the shamanistic practices of Indigenous people; the Twelve-Step Movement and Christopher Bache’s work on the ‘living classroom’. In the latter part of the chapter, Miller introduces his own work in teacher education and the witnessing of his students to the value of contemplative practice and compassion in teaching. Another refreshing aspect of this book is the willingness to discuss spirituality openly in relation to professional practice. The benefits of mindfulness practices most quoted in therapeutic contexts usually relate to claims for reductions in reactivity, improvements in attention and focus, and an increased sense of calm. However, the opening up of spiritual awareness is an important factor to be considered for those teaching contemplative practices. While Miller successfully shows the value of contemplative practices, the book would benefit from a brief discussion of any contraindications to introducing mindfulness or any vulnerabilities and pitfalls that teachers should be aware of when introducing a practice that can fundamentally affect a person’s sense of self and relationship to the world. Chapter 6 provides an overview of the Mindfulness Movement, its history and impact in the areas of business, sport, law and education in the last 20 years. This chapter contains many useful references to recent research and literature, while also giving an overview of programmes in education, health and social care. Again, the quotations from Miller’s students bear a touching witness to the value of mindfulness in both personal and professional lives. The final chapter is a personal account of Professor Miller’s (Jack’s) own teaching followed by a brief but moving autobiographical account of his life. The inclusion of this chapter is entirely apt for a book that passionately makes the case for a personal journey with contemplative practice, whether embarked on from professional or personal beginnings. It is a thoroughly readable book that I will return to time and again in relation to my own meditation practice, mindfulness teaching and therapeutic work. I would commend it as an excellent introductory text to those interested in introducing contemplative practice to their own lives or those currently teaching mindfulness in schools or higher education.","PeriodicalId":45218,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Childrens Spirituality","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2015-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/1364436X.2014.988003","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60085058","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

I have looked at the All Round Training in Excellence (ART-Excel) program for adolescents developed by an international spiritual organisation called the Art of Living Foundation (AOL Foundation). Adolescents participants (n = 396) of this program from four cities – Vancouver, London, Johannesburg and Mumbai – comprised of the sample. An equal number comprised of the control group. The findings suggest that spirituality is generally perceived as having positive mental health and well-being influences for program participants. Logistic regression analyses showed that girls, Hindus (homeland and Diaspora), adolescents in higher monthly expenses brackets, with a better health status, that is no self-declared ailments saw a higher efficacy to the ART-Excel program. The program was in general seen to contribute to well-being, social participation, sense of social duty, relationships, future vision and educational attainment. It is important to recognise the role of spirituality in early adolescents’ psychological well-being and include discussion of such coping mechanisms in working with this population. Moving this further it is also important for helping professionals to be cognisant of the possible presence and importance of spiritual beliefs in the lives of troubled adolescents such as runaway and homeless youth.","PeriodicalId":45218,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Childrens Spirituality","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2015-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/1364436X.2014.999230","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60085116","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

After having identified two opposite extremes – the ‘continuity thesis’ and the ‘discontinuity thesis’ – the article appropriates the logic of gift exchange to map out a mediating position. The fact that the practice of gift exchange is susceptible to criticism is subsequently noted, and two major lines of philosophical criticism are considered and related to the continuity thesis and the discontinuity thesis, respectively. The article then makes use of the work done by John Milbank to show that a purified notion of gift exchange is possibly from the vantage point of Christian theology, and finally seeks to apply this notion to the relationship between generations.","PeriodicalId":45218,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Childrens Spirituality","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2015-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/1364436X.2014.999231","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60085121","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
