The impact of ICTs does not conform to the globalization paradigm’s suggestions. To address this issue, this article argues that glocalization and localization should be viewed as autonomous processes. Glocalization offers a means for the interpretation of the ICT revolution in techno-social relationships. It leads to the reconstruction of places through digital means or newfound third spaces of glocality. In the first instance, ICTs often lead to a reconstruction of local places, whereas in the second instance, ICTs lead to glocalities.","PeriodicalId":45157,"journal":{"name":"Global Media and Communication","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.2,"publicationDate":"2023-02-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45419132","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is presented in five chapters and begins with the controversies tagging the popularity of the English Wikipedia (the 13th most visited website globally, which has more than six million articles and nine billion page views per month). Chapter 1 introduces the authors’ arguments behind the representation of Wikipedia as common knowledge. In the review, the authors explain the five pillars of the actual practice of how Wikipedia collects all branches of knowledge and distributes them to everyone for free. The first pillar tells the readers about the lofty goal of Wikipedia as an encyclopaedia that provides objective information and reality to its readers (Menking and Rosenberg, 2021). The second pillar states that ‘Wikipedia is written from a neutral point of view’ to remove ‘editors’ personal opinion and interpretation (pp. 3–5). The next pillar highlights one of the foremost features to be criticized but rarely well understood by the readers. They are Commons-Based Peer Production (CBPP) and Libre and Open-Source Software (FLOSS), where anyone has licence to compose, copy, edit and distribute all information freely under the attribute of the Creative Commons Attribution/Share-Alike (CC-BY-SA) copyright. The fourth pillar states, ‘please don’t bite newcomers’ (p. 10), indicating that all editors should treat each other with respect and courtesy. The last pillar says that ‘Wikipedia has no firm rules’ (pp. 11–12). Chapter 2 discusses what counts as reliable and verifiable information. It also addresses Gofman’s critiques of the crowd-sourced and errors revision models of Wikipedia information construction. These critiques came up because Gofman failed to understand the multitude of guidelines and policies Wikipedia has in place to protect against misinformation and errors. Therefore, McDowell and Vetter introduce the ‘Neutral Point of View’ and ‘Verifiability’ policies to guard against the insertion 1125590 GMC0010.1177/17427665221125590Global Media and CommunicationBook review book-review2022","PeriodicalId":45157,"journal":{"name":"Global Media and Communication","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.2,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46913052","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Communication scholars have paid attention to this relationship. We argue that mediatization involves the incorporation of various patterns of interaction among users of social media platforms. We used two theoretical approaches, namely mediatization and symbolic interaction. We surveyed a purposive sample that we selected according to certain criteria. Regression analysis revealed the correlative relationship between the dimensions of mediatization over social media platforms and the patterns of symbolic interaction among users.","PeriodicalId":45157,"journal":{"name":"Global Media and Communication","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.2,"publicationDate":"2022-11-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45202156","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Surprisingly, this did not lead to the inclusion of sexual assault as a key campaign issue in the Indian parliamentary elections in early 2019. This study investigates the underlying role of news media and social media in building an anti-sexual assault agenda in the 2019 Indian Lok Sabha election campaign. It builds on past literature on rational choice decision-making theory, social media activism and rape as a political issue in campaigns. This mixed method study includes the analysis of political manifestos and Facebook posts during the campaign, news articles published in the two most circulated English newspapers in India and interviews with political journalists. The restrained mainstream media coverage of sexual assault and pan-Indian social media platforms helped to limit the issue from becoming a part of the campaign during the elections.","PeriodicalId":45157,"journal":{"name":"Global Media and Communication","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.2,"publicationDate":"2022-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46989461","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The findings indicate that the following structural factors determined their perceptions: the journalists’ willingness to adopt the news media logic, journalists’ conceptions of the media as primary sources of political information and media and journalist independencies. The effects of these factors on journalists’ perceptions are defined by the types of media content, platform and media ownership with which they are associated and also the journalists’ age, gender, education level and position in the media organisation.","PeriodicalId":45157,"journal":{"name":"Global Media and Communication","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.2,"publicationDate":"2022-10-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49004904","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To this end, I present an original case study, collecting empirical data from the most popular Chinese community question-answering (CQA) website, Zhihu. By using a mixed-method research design, consisting of content analysis (CA) and critical discourse analysis (CDA), I explored gender-issue debates between Chinese internet users. The analysis reveals how such debates inform divided opinions between women and men internet users, and how misogynistic men invoke a nationalist discourse to distort the debates.","PeriodicalId":45157,"journal":{"name":"Global Media and Communication","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.2,"publicationDate":"2022-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42209397","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On 15 July 2016, reports emerged through social networking sites and other mainstream media of armoured military tanks blocking the entrances to the Bosphorus and Fatih Sultan Mehmet bridges in Istanbul. Appearing via FaceTime on CNN Türk, President Erdoğan called people onto the streets to confront the occupying forces. Following the foiled coup attempt, officials praised the public for using communication technology to topple the coup plotters. I juxtapose the different settings where the coup unfolded to argue these events are symbolic phenomena, underscoring how the imaginary of ‘national unity’ is mediated to (re)affirm state power.","PeriodicalId":45157,"journal":{"name":"Global Media and Communication","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.2,"publicationDate":"2022-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48372541","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It focuses on Telesur (Venezuela) and its collaborations with RT (Russia), Al-Mayadeen (Lebanon) and CCTV/CGTN (China). By combining quantitative and qualitative methods, this paper examines the structure of these collaborations, the discursive construction of alternative narratives and their contribution to countering hegemonic discourses. The findings show that the efforts to construct counterhegemonic narratives are most evident in the co-productions with RT and Al-Mayadeen. Although the co-production with CGTN focusses on culture, it is nonetheless possible to identify the broadcasters’ distinct ideological agendas.","PeriodicalId":45157,"journal":{"name":"Global Media and Communication","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.2,"publicationDate":"2022-10-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42840911","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Are video-on-demand platforms contributing to India’s growing dependence on global players or are they asserting the diversification of domestic players and the progress of Indian capitalism in the cultural and digital industries? To answer, we analyse the strategies of competition and collaboration between historical audio-visual players versus communication players, the dynamics of foreign ownership and the content localisation strategies of global players. We conclude that the study of digital platforms offers an important insight into new forms of economic and cultural hegemony in the cultural industries.","PeriodicalId":45157,"journal":{"name":"Global Media and Communication","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.2,"publicationDate":"2022-09-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47562303","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
