More clinicians are being presented with the opportunity to perform implant services in their own practice. The use of one-piece implant can be considered as treatment for the replacement of missing tooth in the areas of limited tooth-to-tooth spacing and would bring less trauma for the soft tissue. A 52-year-old female patient presented with difficulty in mastication due to the loss of teeth of 35 region with limitation mesio distal space. Radiology examination did not reveal any radiolucencies in 35 region. Radiograph revealed sufficient bone height from crestal to the floor of the mandible. A one-piece implant was placed in the 35 region. The present case used an endosteal implant, one stage surgery, and delayed loading. Restoration with porcelain fused to the metal crown had been delivered three months after the one-piece implant placement. The result of this treatment indicated that one-piece implant could be considered as an effective therapy choice for replacement of missing tooth in order to rehabilitate the masticatory function.","PeriodicalId":44961,"journal":{"name":"Archives of Orofacial Science","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2021-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42636887","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Dentists are more likely to be consulted in this oral infection, hence the ability to diagnose and treat this disease is mandatory. This article described manifestation and therapy of recurrent oral herpes infection. In the first case, a 41-year-old woman came with a complaint of painful sore mouth in her lower gingiva. She experienced canker sores for two to three times a year on the tongue, lips and palate. Laboratory results showed positive IgM anti HSV-2, which matched with the primary herpes infection. However, based on the history and clinical manifestations, she was diagnosed with recurrent intra oral herpes infection. In the second case, a 70-year-old man came with a very painful canker sores in his entire mouth. The patient had to be hospitalised for three days and received analgesic, antibiotic and gel containing triamcinolone. After hospitalisation, canker sores did not heal. Extraorally, we found a crust in the vermillion border of the upper lip and intraorally, we found multiple ulceration of keratinised and non-keratinised mucosa. The use of topical steroid in this patient may aggravated ulceration due to its ability to cause rapid spreading of the virus. The first patient was given chlorhexidine gluconate 0.2% and the second patient was prescribed with doxycycline rinse. Both patients received multivitamin containing zinc. Complete history taking, objective and adjunctive examination played a role in establishing the diagnosis and treatment of recurrent oral herpes infections.","PeriodicalId":44961,"journal":{"name":"Archives of Orofacial Science","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2021-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42342891","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of salmon skin extract as traumatic oral ulcer healing. A total of 32 Wistar rats (200 g to 250 g) were distributed into four groups. Group 1 served as the control group (no treatment), Group 2 was topically treated with salmon skin extract agent 4%, Group 3 was topically treated with salmon skin extract agent 5%, and Group 4 was topically treated with salmon skin extract agent 6%. Traumatic ulcers at lip mucosa were performed in all rats and 0.1 ml salmon skin extract was applied on the ulcer twice daily for seven days. The animals were euthanised on the last day of treatment. Biopsy specimens were taken from the lip mucosa in all rats for epithelial thickness evaluation and the study for number of fibroblasts by histological analysis. Significant increase in epithelial thickness and the number of fibroblasts (p > 0.05) was observed in salmon skin extract treatment groups as compared to the control group. Salmon skin extract 6% treatment group had the highest epithelial thickness and the number of fibroblasts amongst the study groups. Salmon skin extract promises an innovative topical application treatment for traumatic oral ulcer healing. Salmon skin extract 6% was the most effective concentration for traumatic oral ulcer healing.","PeriodicalId":44961,"journal":{"name":"Archives of Orofacial Science","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2021-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45034690","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Partial displacement of the tooth is one of its characteristics. Repositioning is the treatment of choice for this type of trauma. The mechanism of bone augmentation and splint in managing the post extrusive luxation teeth reposition was explored and reported. An 18-year-old male with a history of traffic accident which caused extrusive luxation of 11 and 21 with no alveolar bone fracture. The patient was managed by repositioning the teeth and applicating arch-bar on anterior maxillary teeth. After eight weeks of evaluation, periapical radiograph showed the distal bone of 21 had radiolucent appearance followed by Class 1 mobility. The arch-bar was removed, and the periosteal flap was made on the buccal side of 21 and the distal part was curetted then irrigated with 0.9% sodium chloride, then supplemented with bone graft material and pericardium membrane. Lastly, the flap was returned, the tooth was then stabilised using self-curing adhesive resin cement (Super-Bond). The tooth was kept under observation for two months. It was observed that the tooth was asymptomatic and still in function with no radiographic signs of pathosis. These results suggested that tooth reposition might be an alternative to prosthetic or implant dentistry. However, further human research is recommended with long standing follow-up periods and comparative studies to be carried out to identify whether dental implant replacement or reposition is the cost-effective treatment for extruded tooth.","PeriodicalId":44961,"journal":{"name":"Archives of Orofacial Science","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2021-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47455245","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

(A. ilicifolius L.) is a potent inhibitor of Candida albicans (C. albicans) growth and anti-inflammatory. C. albicans causes oral candidiasis in immunosuppressive condition. Mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signalling via p38 appears to discriminate between yeast and hyphal cells of C. albicans. Activation of p38 MAPK by hyphae results in the upregulation of proinflammatory cytokines. The p38 MAPK activation is known to impair corticosteroid action. The research was conducted to investigate the effect of methanolic extract A. ilicifolius L. treatment of oral candidiasis with the immunosuppressive condition through enhancement of p38 MAPK expression in the epithelial cells. Immunosuppressed conditions were obtained when 16 healthy male Rattus norvergicus (Wistar) was given oral administration of dexamethasone and tetracycline for 14 days and induced with C. albicans (ATCC-10231) 1 McFarland. The subjects were divided into four groups (n = 4/group): immunosuppression (IS), immunosuppression with oral candidiasis without treatment (ISC), immunosuppression with oral candidiasis and nystatin treatment (ISC+N), and immunosuppression with oral candidiasis and A. ilicifolius L. treatment (ISC+AI), and were treated for 14 days. Later, the rats were euthanised, and their tongue were biopsied. The p38 MAPK expression was subjected to immunohistochemical examination, observed under a microscope (400× magnification) and statistically analysed (one-way ANOVA, LSD-test, p < 0.05). The p38 MAPK expression of ISC+AI (36.05 ± 1.54) was higher than IS (26 ± 2.32), ISC (26.4 ± 3.71), IS+N (34.2 ± 0.99). Significant differences existed between ISC+AI and ISC+N to IS and ISC (p < 0.05). No significant differences were present between IS and ISC; ISC+AI and ISC+N (p > 0.05). Therefore, this treatment could enhance p38 MAPK expression in oral candidiasis with the immunosuppressed condition.","PeriodicalId":44961,"journal":{"name":"Archives of Orofacial Science","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2021-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42681233","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

L. acidophilus has also been identified in persistent root canal infection and also related to the failure of endodontic treatment. Photodynamic therapy is a therapeutic process involving the combination of a nontoxic photosensitizer and a light source. The excited photosensitizer reacts with reactive oxygen species (ROS), which induce injury and death of the microorganism. This study aimed to prove the effect of irradiation time of photodynamic therapy to the number of L. acidophilus. Fortytwo Eppendorf tubes were treated with 0.5 ml L. acidophilus distributed into seven groups. Group 1 as the control group received no treatment. Groups 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 were treated with a combination of 0.5 ml toluidine blue O (TBO) as a photosensitizer and 630 nm photoactivated (Fotosan®) exposure time for 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 sec. Then, all were stored in an incubator of 37ºC for 48 h. Later, the colony-forming unit (CFU) was counted for each group. There were significant differences in the number of L. acidophilus in CFU of the various irradiation times. The longer the photodynamic therapy irradiation was, the lesser the number of live L. acidophilus became. At 50 sec and 60 sec irradiation, none of the L. acidophilus was found alive.","PeriodicalId":44961,"journal":{"name":"Archives of Orofacial Science","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2021-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48285684","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With the expansion of implantology practice and the increasing number of implants placed annually, the frequency of peri-implant diseases has greatly expanded. The clinical manifestations, in the absence of a globally established classification, are peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis, the counterparts of gingivitis and periodontitis, respectively. However, many doubts remain about their features. Official diagnostic criteria, globally recognised by the dental community, have not yet been introduced. The review presented possible association between gastrointestinal diseases and peri-implant diseases. Previous studies had revealed the association with significantly higher levels of bacteria in patient’s gastrointestinal disease at either gingivitis or in periodontitis site. Additionally, pathogenesis of the periodontitis is similar to peri-implant diseases.","PeriodicalId":44961,"journal":{"name":"Archives of Orofacial Science","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2021-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49436410","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its popularity is attributed to its high patient adaptability and ability to produce rapid treatment changes. The twin block and lip bumper can be combined depending on the patient’s cases. The purpose of therapy with twin block is effective in mandibular growth deficiencies to induce supplementary lengthening of mandibular by stimulating increased growth at the condylar cartilage. The patient was a ten-year-old male patient with skeletal Class II malocclusion. He had a convex facial profile, SNA (sella, nasion, A point) angle of 77.5°, SNB (sella, nasion, B point) angle of 73.0°, ANB (A point, nasion, B point) angle of 4.5°, overjet of 6.5 mm, overbite of 11/41 = 5.0 mm, 21/31 = 4.5 mm, abnormal upper labial frenulum, crossbite in the second left premolar of maxilla, crowded anterior teeth of mandibular, deficiency of mandibular growth, lower lip sucking habit, anterior teeth of maxilla with diastema and proclination. Orthodontic treatment for patient is a combination of twin block and lip bumper appliances. After seven months, frenectomy is used to eliminate and correct the spacing in the frenulum. After 10 months, the patient’s skeletal and profile had improved to skeletal Class I malocclusion, SNA angle of 78.0°, SNB angle of 75.0°, ANB angle of 3.0°, overbite and overjet of 4.0 mm, and the lower lip sucking habit had stopped. Twin block and lip bumper appliances are particularly good alternative treatment in managing selected cases of skeletal Class II malocclusion.","PeriodicalId":44961,"journal":{"name":"Archives of Orofacial Science","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2021-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45376559","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We described a clinical case series managed by this technique combined with intraoperative image fusion for accuracy in orbital implant position. In total, eight patients who sustained a total number of 19 orbital wall fractures were described. From the total number of 19 blowout orbital fracture reconstructions comprised of medial and inferior (floor) orbital fractures, malposition was identified in a total of four orbital implants by using image fusion. All cases of implant malposition were immediately revised intraoperatively. Subsequent fusion was carried out to confirm whether the revision was satisfactorily achieved. We found that the intraoperative image fusion technique utilised to determine orbital implant position, especially at the posterior ledge, further augmented the role of intraoperative CT scanning. Image fusion conceptually provides an immediate, real-time, and objective solution for intraoperative image analysis and potentially eliminates problems with misaligned CT images. It also reduces the need for the surgeon to ‘eye-ball’ the CT images acquired or the need for additional intraoperative time, since the patient’s head orientation is always axially at random during the acquisition of the CT. Conventional methods for CT image assessment are subjected to one’s own interpretation and may introduce inconsistent or longer intraoperative decision-making. The technique facilitates intraoperative decision-making and reduces the risk of orbital implant malposition in orbital blowout fracture reconstructions. Hence, surgical complication in relation to orbital implant malposition in orbital blowout fracture management could be minimised. In addition, no further postoperative imaging is required.","PeriodicalId":44961,"journal":{"name":"Archives of Orofacial Science","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2021-06-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42788834","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Dental caries with deep lesion and dentin exposure from nine primary teeth were cut into two equal parts and randomly divided into two groups in a before-after study. Each group was brushed with one type of toothpaste two times per day for 28 days and rested in artificial saliva. SEM images of cavity bottom surfaces and energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX) were used to determine the percentage of calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), fluoride (F) and oxygen (O) at six continuous measured areas from the surface of the cavity bottom into 45 µm depth before and after brushing. About 95% confidence interval of the mean difference was calculated by performing bootstrap resampling with 5000 resamples followed by comparison analysis. The percentage of Ca, P, F, O was shifted after treatment. There was no difference between the two groups. The SEM images reflected a similar illustration of EDX data. The combination of fTCP and 950 ppm fluoride in toothpaste showed equivalent effectiveness to the 1100 ppm fluoride toothpaste in primary dentin caries.","PeriodicalId":44961,"journal":{"name":"Archives of Orofacial Science","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2021-06-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48110366","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
