Much effort has gone into detailing disease associations with pathophysiologic pathways and mechanisms involved in oxidative stress. Supplements and foods have been studied to prevent or reverse this pervasive problem. While individual behaviors have been found to improve oxidative stress, no significant progress has been made toward a broad strategy to curb this disabler and killer. This article is aimed at providing a plausible oxidative-stress-related theory on disease causation. We then provide a multimodal approach aimed at preventing and mitigating the disease-causing inflammatory fallout from redox imbalance. Together the hypotheses provide a foundational framework for research to mitigate the effects of oxidative stress.

Given the physiological differences between males and females, research is needed in normal-weight females to assess safety and effectiveness. This article presents preliminary, observational data on adverse events as well as the immediate and sustained effects of water-only fasting followed by whole-plant-food refeeding on body composition and select biomarkers in seven normal-weight females recruited from a residential fasting center. Median fasting, refeeding, and follow-up lengths were 10, 5, and 44 days, respectively, during which there were no severe or serious adverse events. Diabetes medications are often associated with weight gain, hypoglycaemia, and cardiovascular risks. People with diabetes and obesity often receive generic “eat less, exercise more” guidelines that do not lead to sustainable outcomes.\u0000Objective: Evaluate the effectiveness of a personalized intervention focused on Plant-Based Whole Foods (PBWF), Time Restricted Eating (TRE), and Fractionized Exercise (FE) in reducing blood glucose, weight, waist circumference, and medication use.\u0000Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on a non-randomized group of 41 participants. Adults with diabetes or prediabetes (68%) or obesity (32%) (mean age: 47 years; SD: 13 years; 76% male) received personalized coaching remotely and digitally for 3 to 6 months, depending on their health and motivation baseline. A total of 35 participants completed their intervention. The primary measures were changes in HbA1c, fasting and postprandial glucose levels, weight, waist circumference, and medication use.\u0000Results: The intervention yielded significant improvements in various health parameters among the Diabetic/Prediabetic and Weight loss program participants. Specifically, a reduction was observed from baseline to completion in HbA1c by 1.64 percent points, fasting glucose by 24 percent, postprandial glucose by 27 percent, weight by 3.4 percent, and waist circumference by 3.2 percent in the Diabetic/Prediabetic program participants. In the Weight loss program participants, there was a reduction in weight by 7.5 percent and waist circumference by 6.8 percent. Participants with diabetes who were on insulin injections prior to the start of the intervention reduced their insulin doses by 67 percent by the end of their personalized program. Participants onnon-insulin, oral hypo-glycaemic agents at baseline reduced such medication categories by 27 percent.\u0000Conclusions: The findings suggest that a personalized program combining PBWF, TRE, and FE can significantly improve the biomarkers of metabolic health in individuals with diabetes and obesity while reducing the need for medications.

The authors initially sought to correlate the self-reported nutritional habits of physicians in two Chicago-area academic medical centers, with the occurrence of symptoms after each of their two COVID-19 vaccinations. However, of the 274 respondents, 196 (72%) were eating an unrestricted omnivorous diet. The restricted diet group included 41 (15%) semi-vegetarians (reducing, but not eliminating, animal products), 14 (5%) who consumed vegetables, eggs, and dairy, but no fish or red meat, 12 (4%) who consumed vegetables, seafood, eggs, and dairy, but no red meat, 10 (4%) who ate vegetables and seafood without red meat, eggs, or dairy, and one physician (0.3%) who consumed no animal products. Thus, this study was underpowered for the healthy dietary patterns (i.e., pescatarian/vegetarian) as published in the 2019 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association (ACC/AHA) Guideline on the Primary Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease, as most physicians surveyed were on an unrestricted American diet in these two academic medical centers. These findings call for more vigorous physician nutrition education and implementation strategies for evidence-based guidelines.

There is a lack of existing literature documenting arugula’s general health benefits and its potential to improve endothelial dysfunction, specifically due to the high nitrate content the plant carries. It is well understood that nitrates play an important role in endothelial function and since arugula contains large quantities, it could be a new avenue for researchers to explore in the area of cardiometabolic disease. Thus, this call for action will shine light on the potential therapeutic effects of this often neglected plant.
