Castor gourd is one of the most versatile natural manures. It is a truly organic manure that improves soil fertility without causing damage or rot. Castor flour contains Ricinus communis, a substance that is toxic to humans, animals and insects. One of the major toxic proteins is “ricin”, which has been reported to cause abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, depression and death. In this case report, 15 dogs who received veterinary treatment after eating castor gourd in Gyeongsangnam-do were classified into a group that survived during the treatment period and a group that did not, and compared the differences in clinical features, CBC, chemical, and electrolyte tests. Be careful not to allow pets access to fertilizers containing ricin, and administration of monensin is recommended as a treatment.","PeriodicalId":448358,"journal":{"name":"The Korean Society for Veterinary Nursing","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116303053","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the first qualitative test, a total of 45 cases (0.5%), 53 cases (0.58%), and 33 cases (0.47%) were positive for the three years from 2020 to 2022, respectively. In the second quantitative test, a total of 23 cases(1.58%), 26 cases (1.39%), and 25 cases (0.58%) of hazardous residues were found to be positive in 2020. Overall, the positive rate was high in beef, but there was not a single positive reaction in duck, lamb, and horse meat did not show a positive reaction for 3years. Therefore, it is necessary to further strengthen the inspection of harmful residues on beef in the future. To this end, the government will have to invest heavily in manpower and equipment in the livestock sanitation laboratory.","PeriodicalId":448358,"journal":{"name":"The Korean Society for Veterinary Nursing","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123663273","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Polycystic kidney disease in cats is classified as an autosomal dominant genetic disease and has been found to be caused by mutations in the PKD1 gene that is coding a unit of mechanosensitive calcium channel, polycystin 1. It shows that humans and cats share a genetic cause for polycystic kidney disease. In this paper, we try to understand the pathogenesis of polycystic kidney disease through the genetic mutations and protein functions of feline polycystic kidney syndrome reported so far, and discuss the direction of genetic research that needs to be performed in the future.","PeriodicalId":448358,"journal":{"name":"The Korean Society for Veterinary Nursing","volume":"205 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114044905","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For this purpose, we analyzed the effect of skin service on changes in the concentration of serum cortisol, the body weight, body temperature, heart rate and skin lesions, and obtained results as follows. Compared to the control group or the ordinary grooming group, the stress grooming group showed high concentration of serum cortisol, and their recovery was slow but they were recovered to the normal state in 24 hours. Body temperature increased in the ordinary grooming group and the stress grooming group compared to the control group. Body temperature after 4 hours from grooming service was lower than that just after the service, and the temperature before the grooming service was restored in 24 hours from the grooming service. The results of this experiment showed that grooming service to pet dogs causes stress and increases the rise of body temperature, heart rate and the concentration of serum cortisol. However, these symptoms disappeared within 24 hours from the experiment, and skin inflammation was observed in a dog but not serious.","PeriodicalId":448358,"journal":{"name":"The Korean Society for Veterinary Nursing","volume":"120 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128055021","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hot-water extracts were prepared to examine the antioxidant activities. 1,1-diphenyl -2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2’-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6- sulfonic acid (ABTS) radical scavenging ability were measured and compared. In addition, the content of anti-oxidative compounds was also evaluated by measuring the total phenol content and flavonoid content of the extracts. As for the DPPH radical scavenging activity, perilla leaf, sesame leaf, potato, and pepper showed a scavenging rate of over 60%, and seaweed, soybean, and radish showed low activity. In ABTS scavenging activity, perilla leaf and broccoli showed high antioxidant activity, and seaweed showed the lowest value. Antioxidant properties appear better as the contents of some polyphenolic compounds and flavonoid-based components are higher. Perilla leaf had the highest total phenolic content and flavonoid content, and sesame leaf, radish seed, and mallow also showed high content of anti-oxidative compounds.","PeriodicalId":448358,"journal":{"name":"The Korean Society for Veterinary Nursing","volume":"93 4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115829687","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Dog biting is an important issue for personal safety and public health, and is a major issue that causes social conflicts and costs. However, there is still a lack of accurate statistical data or research related to dog biting in Korea, and the legal system is also insufficient. In this study, after examining the current status of dog biting in Korea, related statistics, research data, and related laws in foreign countries, laws and cases that effectively reduced dog biting accidents were introduced. Then, based on this, alternatives applied to reality in Korea were presented.","PeriodicalId":448358,"journal":{"name":"The Korean Society for Veterinary Nursing","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114932199","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition, various problems caused by feral dogs are on the rise, so capture and adoption are urgently needed, but it is difficult to capture. The use of the COLLARUM® Canine Capture Device is considered to be a very useful live capture tool in the domestic situation where it is difficult to capture feral dogs. This capture tool meets international humanitarian capture standards and is already widely used in Australia and other places where feral dogs cause ecological problems, so its effectiveness and safety have been verified. It is easy to install and move, so it is possible to install many of them in places where it is difficult to use a capture frame, such as a mountain area, which is the main wild dog habitat in Korea. As described above, COLLARUM® can be installed in almost any place, including mountainous areas, so it is possible to safely capture feral dogs as well as stray dogs, enabling effective management of abandoned animals. Therefore, it is considered to be the equipment that should be most actively considered for domestic introduction and local government distribution in order to manage the population of wild dogs and increase the capture rate.","PeriodicalId":448358,"journal":{"name":"The Korean Society for Veterinary Nursing","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117317918","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aims to evaluate serum oxidative stress levels in New Zealand white rabbits following ischemic AKI. On clinical histological examination and autopsy, some rabbits demonstrated severe organ dysfunctions such as gastrointestinal stasis or acute kidney or small intestine inflammation. Twenty-four hours following surgery, serum oxidative stress levels were significantly more increased in all rabbits than they had been prior to surgery. Compared to 24 hours after surgery, most rabbits had lower levels of oxidative stress at one week, but those with symptoms of organ dysfunction had higher levels. Elevated oxidative stress levels prior to kidney surgery were associated with severe organ dysfunction, more pronounced inflammatory and pathological changes to organs, and shorter survival times. Assessment of oxidative stress levels may be a useful indicator for predicting the risk of death from severe organ dysfunction in New Zealand white rabbits.","PeriodicalId":448358,"journal":{"name":"The Korean Society for Veterinary Nursing","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127179799","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, we first evaluated whether OE supplementation in the in vitro maturation (IVM) medium alters the oocyte maturation capacity by affecting glucose/amino acid metabolites, meiotic maturation, cumulus cell (CC) expansion, and antioxidants. Various OE concentrations (50, 100, 200, 500, and 5000 μg/mL) were included in the IVM medium. Only the oocytes treated with 100 μg/mL OE exhibited an improved meiotic maturation rate when compared with that of the other groups (non-treated group, 78.6 ± 3.0% vs. 100 μg/mL OE-treated group, 81.6 ± 4.3%); however, the difference was not significant. To observe the changes in glucose and amino acid metabolism in the OE-treated oocytes, we measured the amounts of diverse constituents (glucose, lactate, glutamine, and ammonia) in the IVM medium containing OE. Lactate and ammonia levels in the OE-treated group after 44 h of IVM were higher (p < 0.01) than those in the non-treated group. In addition, the expression of the CC expansion factors (Has2 and Tnfaip6) significantly increased (p < 0.05), whereas the mRNA expression levels of antioxidative enzymes (Sod1, Cat, and Gpx1) significantly diminished (p < 0.05) in the OE-treated group. Moreover, mature oocytes treated with 100 μg/mL OE demonstrated increased subsequent embryonic development rates after 144 h of IVM. Thus, the addition of OE in IVM mediums may improve oocyte maturation capacity which could enhance antioxidative enzyme activation, energy metabolism, and expression of the CC expansion factors in porcine oocytes.","PeriodicalId":448358,"journal":{"name":"The Korean Society for Veterinary Nursing","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133319446","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The subjects were adults and nymphs of the Haemaphysalis longicornis, and the repellent efficacy was measured using the filter paper bioassay method. Based on the past research, citronella oil, geranium oil, vetiver oil, and neem oil were selected as a single treatment experiment since their repellent efficacy was confirmed. The first experiment revealed that the repellent efficacy of citronella oil and geranium oil were high. Afterwards, in order to investigate the synergy effect on tick repellent efficacy, experimental group was consisted of neem seed oil (carrier oil) that was blended with citronella and geranium oil, at a ratio of 1:1, 2:1, and 17:3 (15%). Also, negative control group was composed of ethanol that was blended with citronella and geranium oil at the same ratio of experimental group. As a result, the blending of citronella and neem seeds showed higher repellent efficacy in all blending ratios than the blending of geranium and neem seeds. In adult ticks, blending ratio of citronella and neem seeds was 1:1 and 17:3, showed the most significant difference of repellent efficacy. In nymph ticks, when the blending ratio of citronella and neem seed was 1:1 and 17:3, the repellent efficacy was the same as that of the positive control commercial repellent. In conclusion, it was confirmed that both nymph and adults ticks showed higher repellent efficacy when blended than single treatment. In this study, the synergy effect of the blending of citronella and neem seeds on the tick repellent effect has a high potential to replace synthetic repellents.","PeriodicalId":448358,"journal":{"name":"The Korean Society for Veterinary Nursing","volume":"515 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132827744","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
