An appropriate approach in this regard is to compare the two types of catalog according to the processes in which bibliographic records are created (the input stage), manipulated (the storage stage) and retrieved (the output stage). Studies the concepts underlying the input‐storage/output of bibliographic records and reveals major differences between online catalogs and card catalogs. These differences are multiplied and widened when moving from input stage to output stage to such an extent that online catalogs can be considered as a significant departure from manual catalogs. There are three steps involved with the ANT*ILL programs: downloading the “pending” file from OCLC via the Internet; searching those downloaded records on the UCI III OPAC to extract the call number and circulation status; and outputing the results. The ANT*ILL programs are written in the Perl programming language and run under the UNIX operating system. Discusses the system′s design, its implementation, and its performance. By combining the SaveScreen function key with frequently used PRISM function keys such as 〈SEND〉, 〈DISPLAY RECORD SEND〉, 〈FOR〉, and 〈BAC〉, the activities of a PRISM user can be recorded and stored in a predefined data file for later analyses. For example, from the results of the analyses, the usage levels of OCLC workstations and the approximate monthly PRISM search cost of each workstation were obtained. In addition, based on the recorded search activities, a retraining in PRISM search can be planned. Certainly, by familiarizing oneself with PRISM search commands and search structures, a user can perform cost‐effective and efficient searches.
